HTC has fix in the works for EVO 4G screen sensitivity; separation problems are minor
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsWe've just been tipped off on a couple feel-good items for EVO 4G owners that should end your Friday on a bright note:
- The glass separation issues are real, but said to be super minor and have no effect on the usability of the phone apart from a nearly imperceptible "give" to the touch. That said, HTC has made some assembly changes that should reduce or eliminate the problem going forward, and it'll keep an eye on the situation.
- This is really interesting: the screen sensitivity problems are also real and are apparently far more prevalent in arid climates, but it can be fixed with a software patch alone. That patch will be rolling out to EVOs soon.

MyFord Touch Driver Connect Technology

Ford announced today their move to upgrade their SYNC in-car communications system into MyFord Touch. This all-encompassing system integrates not only your cell phone or portable media device, but now your GPS, air conditioning, audio library, and much more. Multiple touch screens will replace the traditional dashboard of your car, and remember that mobile Wi-Fi hotspot we were talking about before? Seems that this technology will be moving on past MyFord to MyLincoln and MyMercury soon. Although I'm personally holding out for MyDeLorean.

Samsung keeps rolling with Corby line, adds low-end Corby POP

Samsung's Corby handsets are already targeted toward the lower end of the market -- relatively new territory for full-touch devices -- but they're looking to aim even lower with the new Corby POP, it seems. Having recently popped up on Samsung Mobile's official India site as coming soon, it should feature a 2.8-inch display, integrated FM radio (a must in the Indian market), and a weaksauce 1.3 megapixel cam (down from the Corby's 2 megapixel unit) for an extremely reasonable 7,000 rupees (about $151) unsubsidized. Samsung M5650 takes Corby a little upmarket
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No CommentsIn case you hadn't realized that the full-touch invasion was in full swing, consider this your final warning: Samsung has just announced its M5650, essentially a minor upmarket revision from the colorful Corby launches a few months back. On top of a 3 megapixel cam, the M5650 features WiFi, 3G, some trick social network integration (expect any phone worth a damn to do this in 2010), an FM radio, something Samsung ominously calls the "Cartoon UI," and a one-touch music key. It's not going to blow anyone away on paper, but this is the kind of sweet little number that could get subsidized down to free on virtually any postpaid carrier in the world -- and zero out-of-pocket is always an intriguing proposition, is it not? The M5650's available now in Portugal and will be coming to other parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia before too long.

Sony Ericsson acknowledges touchscreen issues on Aino
Posted on November 26, 2009 | No CommentsAs if the Aino's odd name wasn't handicap enough, Sony Ericsson's taking another hit on its high-end Remote Play-capable full-touch (but Symbian-free) phone today with news that it's got a dodgy touchscreen. It's unclear exactly what's wrong or how it's ultimately going to get resolved, but several British retailers -- most notably behemoth Carphone Warehouse -- have elected to yank it from shelves until they've gotten confirmation that the mothership has fixed the problem. A company spokesman notes that "Aino has sold in limited numbers in the UK, so this issue affects only a very small number of customers," which is a backhanded way of saying "for once, we're incredibly lucky no one wants this thing" -- though considering that the Satio's on hold now, too, "lucky" might not be the right word for it. For what it's worth, Sony's US SonyStyle store is still hawking Ainos for $600, so part with that six-pack of Benjamins at your own risk.

Dynamic Controls has just taken the wraps off of its new iPhone application which should be of great interest to those who use a wheelchair on a daily basis. The application -- which connects with the wheelchair via Bluetooth and has a built-in charger for the iPhone or iPod touch -- enables diagnostics to check for any problems with the chair. OMWOW! Pocket-Lint has some red hot pix of the iPod Touch used in Apple Stores to enable on-the-spot check out. It's a standard Touch with a barcode scanner and credit card reader but it replaces the old EasyPay systems from Microsoft they were using until now.

Artist David Hockney isn't afraid of picking up new media -- over the years, he's used Polaroids, photocollages, and even fax machines to create his art -- in addition to regular, old-fashioned painting. Now, he's taken to using his iPhone to create new works of art. The resultant "paintings" have been exhibited at the Tate Gallery and Royal Academy in London, as well as galleries in Los Angeles and Germany. Like artist Jorge Colombo (whose iPhone fingerpainting was featured on the cover of The New Yorker), Hockney uses the iPhone app Brushes to create his works. In an interview with the New York Review of Books, Hockney notes that he prefers and still uses the original version of the app, not the more recent updates. Hmm... maybe the reason our own Brushes paintings stink is because we're using the update!
