HTC has fix in the works for EVO 4G screen sensitivity; separation problems are minor
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsWe've just been tipped off on a couple feel-good items for EVO 4G owners that should end your Friday on a bright note:
- The glass separation issues are real, but said to be super minor and have no effect on the usability of the phone apart from a nearly imperceptible "give" to the touch. That said, HTC has made some assembly changes that should reduce or eliminate the problem going forward, and it'll keep an eye on the situation.
- This is really interesting: the screen sensitivity problems are also real and are apparently far more prevalent in arid climates, but it can be fixed with a software patch alone. That patch will be rolling out to EVOs soon.

Jolicloud 1.0 will support some touch displays out of the box

Joilcloud, is a Linux-based operating system for small devices (e.g. netbooks and touchscreens). The new version 1.0 now supports a long list of touchscreen devices right out of the box. Check out the video of it in action showing off the new HTML 5 interface. Looks pretty cool.

HTC EVO 4G and Droid Incredible suffering from unresponsive screen issues
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsUh oh: on top of reports that the EVO 4G suffers screen-detachment issues, we're also starting to hear that the touchscreen sensor is inconsistent, particularly when the phone isn't grounded. We've seen more than one report and video purporting to show the EVO's touchscreen failing to smoothly register touches when the phone isn't being handheld (and thus grounded). We haven't been able to reproduce the issues ourselves, but trust us when we say we've heard from enough unhappy EVO owners to believe that the problem is real. What's more, there's also an older video showing the same problem on three different Droid Incredibles, which obviously shares strong family ties to the EVO. We've pinged HTC, we'll let you know what we hear -- for now, get your sad faces on and watch the videos after the break.

Nokia C7 caught with 8 megapixel camera?
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsAfter seeing the C7 listed in what looked to be legitimate Nokia documents, we now have our first look at the handset -- or at least a device that claims to be the C7-00. Purported specs scrapped from a Chinese site suggest an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, stereo speakers, 3.5-mm headphone jack, and a display measuring about 3.5-inches. It's unclear if said display is resistive or capacitive or if we're looking at an S60 5th or Symbian^3 OS until somebody switches the damn thing on. Until then you can oogle the profile and backside shots after the break.

Sony prototypes pressure-sensitive tactile touchscreen, hopes to use it ASAP
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsSony may come up with some far-out ideas, but the company insists this one's a bit closer to home: it's a LCD touchscreen with force sensing resistors and piezoelectric actuators that can detect how much pressure is applied and vibrate the panel respectively. Tech-On was rocking the scene at Open House 2010, and reports that the Cover Flow-like interface shuffled icons faster the harder a demonstrator pressed down, an interesting UI quirk in and of itself. Though the publication sadly didn't get to test out the tactile feedback for themselves, Sony said commercialization might not be too far off -- when asked about that telling Sony Ericsson logo, the company asserted that it'd like to see the tech in mobile phones "as soon as possible." We'd love to hold them to that, but unfortunately the applied pressure mechanic is just a prototype at this point.

Hitachi working on cheaper, higher quality IPS touchscreens for cellphones
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsIn case you haven't heard, IPS panels are making inroads into the lucrative mobile market this year, and Hitachi's been working behind the scenes on something that should keep that momentum going. In the mainstream, touchscreen IPS displays are currently only available on Apple's iPad (and expected to show up in its next-gen iPhone), but should Hitachi's new production technique pan out, we might be seeing this screen tech in much more affordable devices as well. The company has fiddled with the arrangement of the touchscreen elements inside the panel, which it argues has made them cheaper and easier to produce and replace. All good news, but these things do take a while to filter through into reality, until which time you might wanna sate yourself with the latest desktop IPS displays, those ain't too shabby or expensive either.

HTC Wildfire escapes from Yellow Mountain riding Android 2.1 (update: official)
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsWhoops, a press conference in Germany seems to have inadvertently set HTC's unannounced Wildfire handset loose. The new candybar brings quadband GSM and 900/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA radios to the Android 2.1 party powered by the ol' Qualcomm MSM7225 processor running at 525MHz. Spec-wise we're looking at HTC's Sense UI running atop a 3.2-inch QVGA touchscreen, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS/AGPS, Blueooth 2.1+EDR, 512MB Flash and 384MB of RAM, and microSD expansion. Hey HTC, anything you want to make official here?

Sharp unveils glasses-free 3D display for ebook readers, tablets
Posted on April 12, 2010 | No CommentsIt was just a matter of time, but now Sharp has unveiled a 10.6-inch display [JP], which is 3D, can be used without glasses and is suitable for e-book readers, tablet PCs and digital photo frames. Just like with the 3D TV the company showed today, technical details are relatively scarce (both devices were publicly shown for the first time today).

Glasses-free 3D displays for mobile devices are nothing new. Hitachi, for example, started selling a 3D-enabled handset [JP] in Japan as early as last year. The Hitachi product didn't make much of a splash, but Sharp's new parallax barrier-based 3D display for mobile devices (which the company announced today) appears to be pretty cool.

Petit Petit touchscreen app: Interesting four-dimensional contact management tool

This strange app is a touchscreen interface that connects people, places, and things using "clouds" of items and people. It basically makes Venn diagrams of your contacts and allows you to share and explore content and messages.
This looks way too weird for the average user but clearly someone out there may want to move Sven and Nikola to a timeline and figure out which emails came from each person and which emails overlap.
The text input system is actually quite cool, however, because it predicts the words you're about to type. Pop over to 4 minutes in to see how that system works.
