Poll: is iOS 4 causing you grief?

To say our tip box has been inundated with reports of iOS 4 issues today would be something of an understatement. So far, those on staff seem to running cool (with the exception of some slow down on our gold build downloads), but obviously you're a larger sample size with so far widely disparate reports. So tell us, is iOS 4 causing you grief? If so, how? (Note: if you're having multiple problems, pick what you'd consider most troublesome.)

Nokia says all of its smartphones will support NFC starting next year

A few hiccups aside, Nokia has been one of the biggest boosters of near-field communication (or NFC) for years now, and it looks like it's now made its biggest commitment to the technology yet -- Nokia's Anssi Vanjoki has announced that all new Nokia smartphones will include NFC starting in 2011. Of course, he did say "smartphones," not "phones," so Nokia does still has quite a bit more room to grow -- and, no, he didn't offer any more details on what those smartphones might be.

  • Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro gets FCC clearance again, this time in tart North American flavor

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro gets FCC clearance again, this time in tart North American flavor

A 900 / 2100 edition of the Symbian-powered Vivaz pro not quite what you were looking for? No worries -- just 24 hours after the approval of its European doppelganger, the North American version of Sony Ericsson's landscape QWERTY slider has now received the blessing of the good bureaucrats up in Washington. Just how North American is it, exactly? Well, it's doing WCDMA Bands II and V, which means it'll work on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus (sorry, T-Mobile). We're not sure what kind of a market there is for a high-end Symbian touchscreen device around these parts, but hey -- with 720p video and continuous autofocus, it's probably worth a look.

AT&T ushers in brave new world of simple clamshells with Pantech Breeze II

The VGA camera on your original Breeze got you down? Time for an upgrade, is it? Fact is, if you bought the original Breeze, odds are good that upgrading hardware is the last thing on your mind -- you're probably the type of individual that waits for something to break before replacing it -- but who knows, maybe AT&T will be able to land a whole new generation of simplephone lovers (yes, we just coined that term) now that it's brought the Breeze II clamshell to market. The slightly upgraded model features a 1.3 megapixel camera and honest-to-goodness 3G data with Video Share support, all while carrying over the three assignable contact buttons below the display that made the original famous (or, you know, notable anyway). It's available now for $20 on contract after rebate.

  • Palm App catalog hits 1,000 apps… okay, 946

Palm App catalog hits 1,000 apps… okay, 946

Hey, good news everybody! The Palm App Catalog, which has lagged far behind its peers, has reached the 1,000 app milestone as of this morning. Well, to be precise, it's hit 946, as pointed out by Electronista, but still, it's a nice little sign of growth for the webOS apps, whose development was hampered by very restricted initial access to its Mojo SDK. In comparison to contenders such as Android, whose catalog numbers around 20,000, and Apples iTunes store, which boasts over 100,000, Palm's numbers are extremely modest -- but progress is progress, especially considering it launched its App Catalog in June with just 30 apps. We look forward to hearing Palm's CES keynote, that's for sure.

  • HTC rolls out ‘digital picture enhancement’ update for HD2

HTC rolls out ‘digital picture enhancement’ update for HD2

We like cheery, pink-hued pics as much as the next guy, but let's be honest: when you're snapping a candid shot from your phone, you want that cherished memory to be preserved in color that's as accurate as possible. Fortunately, HTC has cut an update for its afflicted HD2 that solves the camera issues it's been having -- which is especially good news considering the dreadful theories that it might be a hardware issue -- and we've never seen language as flowery as this to describe a bugfix:
"This update for HTC HD2 delivers clear digital picture quality like never before. Living up to the name of "HD" this phone and its twin LED flash will take beautiful pictures for you to cherish your memories. Displayed in brilliant vibrant colors on its 4.3 inch screen, HTC HD2 camera will delight you."
    Indeed, HTC. Indeed.

    [Thanks, Mikey]

Wronged i8910 HD buyer prepares doctoral-quality thesis on issues

What do you do when you're unhappy with a product you've bought? Return it? Complain on an online forum? Write to the company? Well, for one Mr. Panashe Ngwerume, the answer's a little more complicated than that. You see, this particular gentleman was so incensed by the Samsung i8910 HD's problems and lack of continued development that he felt compelled to write a 25-page -- yes, 25-page -- report detailing the issues and proposed solutions. Unfortunately for Ngwerume and other i8910 HD buyers, Samsung seems to have effectively abandoned Symbian in favor of Android, Windows Mobile, and the company's own bada, but the report suggests that Samsung throw the phone and its firmware to the hacker community for further development, possibly on Maemo or bada. Knowing what we know of giant, global firms like Samsung, the blood, sweat, and tears that went into this Nobel-worthy work were probably for naught, but it makes for a riveting read and a great rallying point for i8910 owners around the world.

  • Samsung Forever comes to Rogers, cue ‘it took Forever to launch’ joke

Samsung Forever comes to Rogers, cue ‘it took Forever to launch’ joke

Samsung's a manufacturer of many smartphone platforms, and odds are good you can find at least one of 'em you like -- between S60 (for now, anyway), WinMo, and Android, they've pretty much got the major bases covered. Say you're the particularly picky type, though, and you want your full-touch widget experience delivered sans the open operating system for some odd reason. Well, turns out Samsung has that angle figured out perhaps better than any other company out there -- and Rogers is adding yet another one to the lineup this week with the introduction of the Forever with a WQVGA LCD (no AMOLED here, sorry), 3.6Mbps HSDPA, a 2 megapixel camera, and naturally, TouchWiz. Interested parties are welcome to sign on the dotted line to the tune of CAD $79.99 (about $77) on a three-year deal, so... you know, you'd better be darn sure you're not going to have the urge to install any third-party apps designed to simulate bodily noises over the next three dozen months.

  • Amazon selling Samsung Moment for $100 less than Sprint

Amazon selling Samsung Moment for $100 less than Sprint

Amazon is continuing its fabulous tradition of making carriers look like money-grubbing jerks this week with a solid deal on Samsung's Android-powered Moment for Sprint, which can now be yours for $79.99 on contract. That's versus a considerably more finance-destroying $179.99 figure if you were to walk into a brick-and-mortar Sprint store -- and even bests Best Buy's deal by $20. Considering that OLED display and the fact that the Sammy's core clips along at 10 times the megahertz of Amazon's price, $80 out-of-pocket sounds pretty reasonable. Unfortunately, Android 1.5 doesn't sound as reasonable these days -- so here's hoping that 2.0 trickles down to this sucker on the double.

    [Thanks, Ron]

  • Klausner takes aim at RIM, Motorola over visual voicemail patents

Klausner takes aim at RIM, Motorola over visual voicemail patents

It's been quite a few months since we've heard anything from Klausner Technologies, but it looks like the company has finally decided on its next set of targets that are allegedly infringing on its now infamous visual voicemail patents. As announced in a pair of expectedly terse press releases, Klausner says that both RIM and Motorola have now crossed into lawsuit territory with the Blackberry Bold 9700 and Motorola CLIQ, although it isn't specifying what sort of result it's looking for, or exactly how the two devices are infringing on its patents (at least some other RIM and Motorola devices are apparently covered under licenses granted to mobile operators). If the company's past track record with Apple, Verizon, LG, and Google is any indication, however, we wouldn't bet against a settlement.

  • Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)

Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)

Now look, we're not saying we know for sure that Apple thinks Verizon's latest round of merciless attack ads on its device and US carrier are worth responding to, but these latest iPhone spots would certainly suggest it. A new campaign launching tonight focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, and each of the two new TV spots ends with the line "Can your phone and your network do that?" From where we're sitting, it looks like between this new round and AT&T's Luke Wilson-manned comparison spots, both the phonemaker and carrier are fully stepping into the ring. Way to get their attention, guys. See the full clips after the break.

Motorola i410 comes to Boost, catchy name doesn’t

You know how you can tell Moto's new i410 for iDEN isn't really supposed to be hip, stylish, or ultra-functional? Neither Moto nor launch partner Boost bothered to give it a fresh, funky name, bucking the trend set by the Clutch and Debut. Of course, with an utterly basic black rectangular shell, tiny monochrome secondary display, and lack of even a VGA cam, it's clear that they're going for the bottom-most reaches of the market here -- which means that customers should be able to scoop it up for a song on any of Boost's prepaid plans, happily. It's not up on the carrier's site just yet, but it'll be available before the year's up -- and Motorola says that this officially "completes Boost Mobile's 2009 device roadmap," so we hope you weren't holding out for some mythical Android device in the next couple weeks.

  • Apple And Android Now Make Up 75 Percent Of U.S. Smartphone Web Traffic

Apple And Android Now Make Up 75 Percent Of U.S. Smartphone Web Traffic

When it comes to the mobile Web, increasingly there are only two mobile platforms which matter: Apple and Android. According to AdMob's October, 2009 mobile metrics report, the iPhone/iPod Touch and Android phones accounted for 75 percent of mobile Web traffic in the U.S., as measured by all the mobile ad requests it tracks. That number is up from a combined 65 percent in September, 2009. The iPhone is miles ahead of everyone else, but Android is quickly rising as a strong second. While Android phones managed to increase their share from 17 percent in September, 2009 to 20 percent in October, 2009, the iPhone and iPod Touch gained even more, going from 48 percent to 55 percent share. Meanwhile, during that same month the Blackberry 's mobile Web traffic share went down from 14 percent to 12 percent, and Palm's webOS shrank from 10 percent to 5 percent (Ouch).
