iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWelcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London's getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we'll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn't mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you've done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.
Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!
Update 2: NY joins the fray!
Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.
Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!
Update 5: London's doors have swung open and we're now busy activating our brand new Apple phones.
Update 6: Woz and his Segway make their regular appearance at the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store.
Update 7: We're adding a bunch of reader reports. Even as Apple opens its doors to pre-orderers in the US, the lines remain crazy.Continue reading iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)

Tesco Mobile announces cheapest UK iPhone 4 tariffs yet
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
You're not going to believe this, but someone actually bothered to turn up to the iPhone 4 launch with a bit of competitive spirit. Tesco Mobile, an MVNA riding atop O2's network, has busted out its idea of what represents good value for iPhone lovers' money, and it has put everyone else to shame. 1GB of data and unlimited texts come as standard (seems like O2's network can handle the load after all). Two 12-month options are available, at £20 ($29) per month for 250 minutes and £35 ($52) per month for 750 minutes, accompanied by the big spender platter of unlimited minutes and an almost free 16GB iPhone 4 for those willing to spend £45 ($66) over two years. It's all great news for Brits, and you can see exactly how it compares to the big networks in our comprehensive, chart-intensive breakdown right here.Tesco Mobile announces cheapest UK iPhone 4 tariffs yet originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 08:53:00 EST. How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsChoices, choices. Do you get the 16GB or 32GB iPhone 4? The black one now or the white one a little later? We can't tell you which variant of Apple's next phone will hold its value best over the coming months, but we can try to clear up a bit of the fogginess surrounding price plans on offer from UK networks. Orange and O2 are the first to drop handset pricing and full contract details, but they haven't made it easy for the discerning buyer, with each carrier offering more than a dozen options. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Three, and even Tesco Mobile are set to follow suit in the coming days and weeks, but we thought we'd get the ball rolling with the pair we have now.
P.S. -- And just as we publish this, Voda has gone official with its tariffs. We've now broken them down into a more digestible format as well. Just for you.Continue reading How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK

Vodafone UK details iPhone 4 plans a little early, we keep the screenshots
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsWe don't know what shenanigans are going on over in Vodafone HQ, but the UK carrier gave the world a quick glimpse of its iPhone 4 pricing today, before promptly removing the data sheets from the ether. Thankfully, a fast-witted reader by the name of Liam Gladdy captured the incriminating data for us, and we can now sit and ruminate on what Voda has in store. As you might surmise from above, the vast majority of users won't be getting the handset for free, though that doesn't necessarily preclude the contracts from representing good value. We note with glee that Vodafone keeps its data limit at a robust 1GB, unlike a certain other network, and the £30 ($44) a month two-year contract is looking decent from where we're sitting. Prices over 18 months just jump by £5 in monthly outlay with handset costs remaining the same. Click past the break for the full breakdown, including details for the 32GB variety.Continue reading Vodafone UK details iPhone 4 plans a little early, we keep the screenshots

Nokia N8 preview
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsStrap yourselves in, pilgrims. Nokia's next great handset has resurfaced in London today, and this time we were even allowed to turn it on. There's pretty much no way you could be unaware of the N8 by now -- Nokia's done the viral video thing, the teaser demo thing, the feature walkthrough thing, we've covered it to near-exhaustion. But we've never seen it, you know, doing stuff. You can now consider that omission corrected, as we've finally powered up the 3.5-inch OLED screen, entered the overhauled Symbian^3 wonderland, and come back to tell the tale. In-depth impressions follow after the break, and don't worry, we'll have video for you shortly as well.Continue reading Nokia N8 preview

Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsWere you looking forward to purchasing a 16GB smartphone with unique screen technology and an app-centric OS this month? Great, because the Galaxy S pre-order has now gone live in the UK, offering a delivery only four days away from now and prices that are pretty much par for the superphone course. If you want the Super AMOLED machine for free, minimum monthly cost will be steep, starting out at £35 ($51) a pop over 24 months or £40 ($58) over 18 lunar cycles. Both those deals furnish you with 900 minutes of talk time, unlimited texts, and 1GB of 3G data, but the latter works out to be the better value as it tallies up to £720 ($1,045) in total investment over the full term. Then again, most of what Vodafone has on tap compares favorably to the madness O2 is asking iPhone 4 buyers to pony up.Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 02:05:00 EST. O2 offers early iPhone 4 upgrade amnesty in bid to retain customers
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsWould you look at that. Following in the footsteps of AT&T, O2 has today announced it'll allow current customers to pay off the remainder of their contracts at a discounted rate when they re-up with the network for the iPhone 4. Irrespective of how much you're paying now, the UK carrier will charge you a flat rate of £20 ($29) for each leftover month. Considering most iPhone users rock out at £30 and above, that's a solid 30 percent discount (or contract amnesty, however you wanna view it) for the impatient types. Of course, you'll be trading away your usual 14-day cooling off period if you take them up on this deal, so you'd better make doubly sure you want the iPhone 4 on O2 before taking the plunge.O2 offers early iPhone 4 upgrade amnesty in bid to retain customers originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 17:43:00 EST. iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone in UK
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsGood news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it'll have the iPhone 4 ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, June 24. After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its release schedule, some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just announced today will also suffer from a tiered launch. It's looking like Brits won't have to worry about that particular pain, but it's also curious that Vodafone and Orange -- the other local carriers of the iPhone -- are remaining mum tonight. Is Apple lending a hand to its old partner by allowing it early stock? That wouldn't be entirely unfathomable, though it would be pretty unpleasant for impatient types who fancy some carrier choice.
Update: Never mind that whole conspiracy theory: we've just seen that Orange is also throwing its hat into the June 24 ring -- let's keep this momentum going, guys! [Thanks, Blizzard]
Update 2: And now Tech Radar has heard direct from Vodafone that June 24 is a go, giving us a complete Brit pack.
Update 3: Hey, what do you know? T-Mobile UK's getting it too. Choice is good.Continue reading iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone in UK

Motorola Flipout preview
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsWe know you're excited -- the Nokia Twist finally has a legitimate competitor in the square-shaped pseudo-smartphone space! Motorola snuck up on us with its Flipout unveiling yesterday, so today we diligently trudged along to its local offices to get properly acquainted with this new Android handset. Running version 2.1 (Eclair) on a 600MHz processor might seem like a recipe for trouble, but it's the same TI OMAP 3410 as used in the Droid, and our time with the little quadrangle revealed it could handle itself with aplomb. The Flipout also boasts a freshened up Motoblur implementation and 512MB of both RAM and ROM, but only 150MB for user storage -- time to bring on Froyo, eh? With interchangeable back covers (two will come in the retail box) and that handbag-friendly form factor, the Flipout is unashamedly flirting with being a phone for style-conscious lady-geeks, but let's see if it doesn't appeal to gruff old types like us as well. Join us after the break for our full hands-on impressions.Continue reading Motorola Flipout preview

Dell Streak free on contract in UK, assuming £25 monthly plan
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsYou know that Dell Streak tabletphone that's got us all hot and bothered these days? Yeah, well, what with all the stabbing, we totally didn't notice that the device has already been priced in the UK. When it launches on June 4th at The Carphone Warehouse, the Streak will cost you a sizable £429 off-contract -- the same Apple wants for an iPad 16GB -- but not a penny if you opt for its data plans (carried by O2). With a £25 mobile broadband contract or a £35 voice and unlimited data contract, the five-inch WVGA slate will be yours to take home free -- the same as Carphone's iPhone 3G pricing. We don't know quite yet if O2 UK's official tariffs will be cheaper or more expensive, but the tree doesn't grow too far from the apple, as they say.Continue reading Dell Streak free on contract in UK, assuming £25 monthly plan

Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsAs official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we've all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen's backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That's only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let's retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia's higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we're still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we'd totally understand.Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 May 2010 07:27:00 EST.
