How-to: stay connected while traveling internationally
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsIt's a harsh reality that every avid traveler faces, and unless you're fortunate enough to have been born in a generation where you're not expected to check your inbox every half-hour, glance over Twitter updates every 7.23minutesseconds and tell the world where you're at this very moment via Foursquare, you've probably found yourself wondering how on Earth you're going to remain connected once your swipe that passport and leave the comfy confines of a native network. Staying connected while traveling abroad is no easy task, and while the internet may feel ubiquitous to tech-savvy smartphone owners who remain planted within the borders of their home nation, the world wide web suddenly becomes a whole lot less easy to track down once you plop down on foreign soil. Looking to splurge on a little international travel this summer, but can't figure out how you're going to (affordably) upload those Twitpics and YouTube videos once you get there? Fret not, young jetsetter -- we've got the keys to keeping you connected whilst overseas just beyond the break.Continue reading How-to: stay connected while traveling internationally

Skype eager to work with Apple FaceTime, pretty much anyone else
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsWe're still playing the wait-and-see game when it comes to Skype on webOS and Windows Phone 7, but it looks as if to-be iPhone 4 owners won't have to wait long before Skype-based video chatting becomes a reality... if Skype has its way, that is. According to someone on the inside quoted over at Pocket-Lint, Skype "would welcome the opportunity to work with Apple," specifically in reference to integrating FaceTime capabilities into the firm's own app. The mystery man also affirmed that Skype would "welcome the opportunity to work with Apple to bring mobile video calling not only to our many millions of Skype users on iPhone around the world, but also to the countless more making video calls on desktops, TVs and other connected devices." 'Course, there's no specific time frame given, and only Jobs knows if the two companies have said a word to one another about making this happen. One thing's for sure, though -- enabling FaceTime usage within Skype would suddenly made the iPhone 4's video calling abilities a whole lot more appealing. And by "appealing," we mean "useful."Skype eager to work with Apple FaceTime, pretty much anyone else originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 18:21:00 EST. Charges for Skype 2.0 calling on iPhone put off until 2011
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsWhen Skype 2.0 for the iPhone was released, our first reaction was: "It supports free calling over 3G, hooray!" That was, of course, followed quickly by: "It's only free until August, boo!" However, there's some slightly good news on that latter front, with free calling receiving something of a stay of execution. You can now stick it to the man until the end of 2010, at which point the whole "mobile subscription" thing comes into play. Why the delay, and what will you be paying for the privilege when the new decade really starts rolling? That we just don't know.Charges for Skype 2.0 calling on iPhone put off until 2011 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 08:27:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

New Skype 2.0 app for the iPhone allows voice calls over 3G
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsPlenty of other VoIP apps have managed to work in this functionality since Apple / AT&T started allowing it last year, but the official Skype app has been a notable holdout. Now, two months after Skype started doing 3G calls on Android with Verizon, there's a 2.0 version of the app for iPhone that brings voice calls over 3G at last. Mobile iPhone calls are free until August, after which you'll need a "mobile subscription." We're testing out the app as we write this and it seems to work about as well any other 3G VoIP app we've tried: passable, not revolutionary.

Skype Mobile with video support coming to Android Market later this year?
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsSkype's PR folks have been unusually loquacious today, as they've responded to a query about whether HTC's EVO 4G would get a Skype client with a deep and meaningful forward-looking statement, underpinned by a promise of an Android app "for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers." This universally available addition to the Market should arrive "later this year," but what's important about it is that it's preceded by a lengthy spiel about Skype's ambition to "set the bar on mobile video calling," which it also intends to do this year. Does this necessarily mean that Skype video calling is coming to Android in time for us to wish granny happy Hanukkah over video chat? No. Is it a well constructed insinuation to that effect? Hell yes. Read the full statement at the source, or find the juiciest excerpt after the break.

Ooma Bluetooth Adapter ships, unites cellphone and VoIP in holy matrimony
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsThe home VoIP gurus over at Ooma have started shipping their Bluetooth Adapter, a $29.95 dongle that you plug into your Telo to make awesome things happen. The accessory actually works two totally different ways: it makes it so that you can answer Ooma calls on your Bluetooth headset, and it also acts as a handsfree for your cellphone, letting you answer mobile calls on any landline receiver in your house -- a pretty neat trick, if you ask us. The adapter's only available online through Ooma's site for the moment; follow the break for the company's full press release.Continue reading Ooma Bluetooth Adapter ships, unites cellphone and VoIP in holy matrimony

Skype VP says company isn’t developing software for Windows Phone 7 (Update: it’s ‘on the roadmap’)
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No Comments
Consider the bombshell dropped. Skype, the godfather of VoIP apps and an increasingly ubiquitous piece of mobile as well as desktop software, has just let it be known that it's not planning on bringing its goodies to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS. Dan Neary, the company's Vice President for the Asia Pacific region, said that it's "not developing software for the new Windows Mobile software due later this year," but seemed reluctant to expand on the reasons why. Perhaps, like Mozilla, the Skype devs felt they weren't getting access to the right tools. Whatever the reason, this would be a major competitive disadvantage for Microsoft's great new hope on the mobile front, which is already expected to launch with a few things missing. Then again, we shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves as this isn't an official renouncement from Skype, merely a statement of the status quo -- and from a regional exec at that. All we can take away from it for now is that the road ahead looks a bit bumpier than before for WP7.
Update: Looks like this quote might've been taken out of context. MobileTechWorld followed up and learned that while Dan Neary left out Windows Mobile and Windows Phone from a list of currently supported platforms (which makes sense, since one is dying and the other isn't out yet), he said Windows Phone 7 "is on the roadmap." The question seems to be more of a "when" than an "if" they'll start building it.Skype VP says company isn't developing software for Windows Phone 7 (Update: it's 'on the roadmap') originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 May 2010 03:26:00 EST. Verizon Wireless and Skype slated for a duet at MWC
Posted on February 12, 2010 | No CommentsI'll admit that I love me some Skype. I get to call and video chat with all my buddies from overseas without hefty fees, except I was accustomed to doing it only where Wi-Fi was available. While AT&T and Apple have made some recent policy changes to allow VoIP over 3G, it looks like Verizon and Skype are partnering up do to a little of the same.

Why carriers didn’t want to allow 3G VoIP before. And why they’re now setting it free
Posted on January 28, 2010 | No Comments
I've used VoIP apps on the past few iterations of of the iPhone as well as a number of other devices including some from Nokia, HTC, and Samsung. Those apps always only worked over WiFi and have mostly worked as advertised. Experience shows that if there's one thing cellular companies are good at it's ensuring a call can get from point A to point B (although AT&T has been sucking wind lately). It's what they've been doing for almost two decades.
Now that Apple has lifted the ban VoIP over 3G - note it is Apple lifting these restrictions, not AT&T - you have to wonder what's going on. Won't 3G tear down the network around our ears? Won't dogs and cats start living together?

Skype for Symbian enters beta
Posted on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
And no, we're not talking about Skype Lite, either -- a real, legitimate, native-code version of Skype has just hit beta for S60 3.1 and 3.2-based devices. Right now, 17 phones ranging from the E51 up to the N96 are supported -- all Nokias -- but more are promised by the time they get around to releasing a gold build. The app supports free Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G or WiFi, instant messaging, and file transfers, but one thing that it doesn't support is video calling, which makes Fring's recent release all that much more interesting. It can be installed over the air, so go ahead and grab it now -- unless you're using an i8910, in which case you can go sob quietly to yourself.Skype for Symbian enters beta originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 12:08:00 EST. Bang & Olufsen takes VoIP into high style

Bang & Olufsen announced their new BeoCom 5 cordless phone today. I know, I know.. bear with me, it's kinda cool. Despite the fact that many people don't even use land lines any more, B&O knows their target audience, and apparently that audience still does.
