Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster Orbital Watch: Some Watch!

ABlogtoRead posted a little bit on the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster, a mouthful of a watch with some of the most striking styling I've seen in a while. I got to see this piece back at JCK and was extremely impressed. Ball is famous for their gas tube lume and they cover their watches with the stuff. The expected life of the lume is about 25 years, at which point you can have a watchmaker replace it.

    Dual-time: Watches with multiple faces

Ariel at aBlogtoRead posted a thorough list of almost every single watch out there with multiple faces – and there are a lot. The convertible watch has always been the holy grail for collectors and some of the pieces, like the JLC Reverso and the freakshow Cartier Santos Triples are classically crazy while ones like [...]

GPS 800G watch phone gets the job done (and little else)

Watch phones clearly haven't hit the mainstream yet, though a resurgence of Dick Tracy may very well turn that around. Given that we're probably years, if not centuries, away from that happening, it's up to niche import shops like Alibaba to bring us goods like these. The GPS 800G -- delivered by none other than Shanghai Zhiyuan Vacuum Electric Company, of course -- manages to handle time telling, texting, GPS routing and even emergency calling. Oh, and normal calling as well. Looks as if you'll need to ping the supplier in order to get a lock on pricing, but we can't say with a straight face that it'll be worth your while.

Casio releases the PAW5000-1 Pathfinder Watch

Call me a sucker for a Pathfinder, Casio's monstrous sports watches designed for hiking, camping, and cage fighting. The PAW5000 uses the same quad-sensor movement as the other Pathfinder models including a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, and thermometer. Instead of an LCD display, however, the central seconds hand acts as the main indicator, offering a physical view of the various read-outs and cleaning up the face considerably.

    Remember the Linux wristwatch?

With all the hype about the iPad, and indeed, the hype about smaller and smaller mobile computing devices, I thought I would remind you all that there was at one point a Linux-powered wristwatch! This marvelous curiosity was discussed back in 2001, when it ran kernel version 2.2.1, had 8 megabytes of flash memory, and had IrDA (remember that?!). It even had a touchscreen display, and had a PIM suite that "consists of an organizer, WML browser, to-do list and a calculator" all in 51K of code!

Concept watch tells time with frikkin’ lasers

One look at what this watch does will tell you that it's just a concept, and will most likely never see the light of day (no pun intended). The Aurora Watch was designed by Jihun Yeom, and features a hollow face that makes it look like you lost part of your wristwatch, until you push a button and two lasers come out of the bezel to show you the time.

PRW-5000: Casio updates its Protrek sports watch line

Back in February 2009, we reported about Casio adding the PRX-2000T to its Protrek series of watches for sports and trekking enthusiasts. And today, about one year later, Casio announced [JP] the Protrek PRW-5000/PRW-5000T, which at $630 ($780 for the 5000T) is considerably cheaper than its $1,000 predecessor. Quick Look: Kempler & Strauss W Phone Watch

Do you dream of jet boots and ninjas from space? Sure, we all do. Well, the future just arrived in my mailbox, friends, and it's the Kempler & Strauss W Phone Watch, an unlocked GSM phone inside a watch. Is it amazing, you ask? Does it come with a jet pack, you ask? The answers are "Yes" and "No." The phone is about as big as a Garmin GPS watch and has a touchscreen and small camera. I'm going to wear this thing for a few days and report back on how it feels to wear the entire world on your wrist but this far it seems to work fine. The screen is amazingly hard to type on without a little stylus, but it's fun to try. Interestingly, you can even make and take calls without a headset. How much does it cost? $199, friends, and it's available for pre-order now. While it will never replace the standard phone, it's nice to be able to tell people to talk to the hand. Or talk to the wrist. Or whatever. Click through for video Quick Look.

  • Review: Praesto Modern Fliegeruhr

    Review: Praesto Modern Fliegeruhr

In the vast pantheon of watches, the aviator is a timeless paragon of virtue and class. Traditionally given to folks who fly in planes (hence the term "aviator"), these watches were larger than standard watches and often had big crowns for easy winding. The IWC Big Pilots Watch is a classic in the form, with the clear, legible numbers and top triangular noon pip. But, like great paintings, watches often stray from form, and often with positive results. If the Big Pilots Watch is "Whistler's Mother" then the Praesto Modern Fliegeruhr is Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans. At once this watch is an homage, a little work of art, and a sly dig at the stuffy establishment.

Wearing your beats on your wrist drum machine

I suspect this would have been the watch that Herbie Hancock wore when he made his famous "Rockit" video. Back in the early 1980's, Seiko was trying to put everything from TV's to radio's into watches, and along with those ill advised choices, they also made the drum machine watch. Ugly and over priced, the watch never caught on with the public.
