Google faces multi-state investigation in the U.S. over Wi-Fi fiasco. Should it?

Yesterday it emerged that France had discovered that Google's Street View cars had surreptitiously collected private citizens' passwords and other sensitive data. Today we've learned that several states here in the U.S., led by Connecticut, plan to investigate Google over this whole Wi-Fi fiasco. Normally you don't want giant corporations driving around the countryside collecting private information on unsuspecting citizens, right? But does anyone really think that Google is “up to no good” here?

Different Wi-Fi standards: Israel blocks iPad imports from the US

For some people, buying up iPads in the US in bulk and selling them in their home countries for $2,000 and more means serious business. But don't do that in Israel, at least for now. The country's Ministry of Communications has started banning all iPad imports yesterday because of the difference in Wi-Fi standards in the US and Israel.

AT&T’s CEO (of all people): iPad will be driven by Wi-Fi, not 3G

As everybody knows by now, Apple ships the iPad in the Wi-Fi version this month, with the 3G subscription-based model following in April (probably). And as it's AT&T that has secured the right to provide 3G connectivity to iPad users in America, you'd think Randall Stephenson, AT&T's CEO, would be the first person to promote sales of the 3G model.
But it's Stephenson who is now quoted as saying that he doesn't expect "(...) a lot of people out there looking for another subscription (...)" and that the iPad wil mainly be a "Wi-Fi driven product". He made the remarks during a webcast of an investor conference yesterday, adding the iPhone, on the other hand, will continue to play an important role for AT&T "for quite some period of time".

Tivit promises to bring Mobile DTV to the iPhone and other WiFi-equipped mobile devices
Posted on January 4, 2010 | No CommentsThe Mobile DTV standard is official, sure, but the device selection at this point isn't what we'd call plentiful or even appealing -- so leave it to CES to attract a virtually unknown company with an attractive alternative. Dubbed Tivit, the pocketable box is a said to be a bit smaller and lighter than a deck of cards and claims to stream television to a number of WiFi-enabled devices, including Windows laptops, Motorola Android phones (no clue why other Android devices wouldn't be in the running here), WiFi-equipped BlackBerrys, and even iPhone 3G / third-gen iPod touch (software via related App Store download). One charge gets you three hours of reception, and while that $120 price tag isn't too terrible a fee for keeping the phone you like, when the dongle launches in Spring, it better hope the channel selection is more interesting. Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot leaks into the wild (update: $50 U301 on contract?)
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No CommentsMove over, MiFi -- this Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot that just hit our inbox has taken over as our new object of broadband desire. Our tipster says internal training on the Sierra-built device has already begun, and that the unit itself features a microSD slot, support for location services, and has a 100-foot Wi-Fi range -- but sadly we don't have pricing or availability deets to share yet. We're hoping we find out more at CES -- and we'd bet that new dual-mode U301 WiMAX modem that leaked a couple weeks ago makes an appearance as well. Fingers crossed.
Update: The same tipster that sent us the information to start with is back with a few tidbits on the U301. According to the anonymous individual, that USB modem will be launching in February for $49.99 on contract. Also on the horizon? Science sez Wi-Fi is totally safe, not likely to cause people illness
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No CommentsThere's been a few stories over the years about people being overly sensitive to Wi-Fi. It makes them sick and whatnot. There's usually one reaction to such stories: bologna. (That's not my reaction, mind you. If you're sick, you're sick. Who am I to call you a liar?) Well now! A series of studies, carried out by the UK Department of Health, say “there is no consistent evidence to date that exposure to radio waves from wireless networks adversely affects the health of the general population and that there is no reason why schools and others should not use Wi-Fi equipment.”

MPAA has entire town’s municipal Wi-Fi shut down over single piracy allegation

The MPAA has successfully shut down an Ohio town's municipal Wi-Fi network because one person was caught illegally downloading a movie. You know, peers and seeders and all that.

You know what's ridiculous? Modern smartphones without WiFi (why hello there, Pixi and Tour). Looks like Dell's getting the message with the supposed Brazil-bound Mini 3iX, which as far as we can tell is the Mini 3i as it should've been -- same specs, plus WiFi and 3G connectivity. The OPhone-esque user interface also seems to have gone through some changes, at least cosmetically, and Cellular Cafe has the vivid imagery -- so might this be the little guy rumored to be coming to AT&T, or will we get the 2G variant instead? And now Lufthansa adds Wi-Fi to its flights. $27 per flight isn’t too much, right?

That's right, you won't be buying “draft n” routers anymore, as the Wi-Fi Alliance has updated its tests, going from “draft n” to “Wi-Fi Certified n.” Does that make a difference in your everyday computing? No, probably not—how many years now have we been using “draft n” items with nary an issue?

Borders to offer free Wi-Fi

In an effort or "re-engage customers as a serious bookseller," Borders is offering free Wi-Fi powered by Verizon in over 500 stores. Fair enough. Might be a nice little treat for those dudes who sit in the anime aisle reading book after book or the weird guy who is totally angry at the latest of Atlantic Monthly and willing to tell everyone about it near the cafe. It will, in short, make the Borders experience just that more varied and magical.

Buy something or get out: Some New York cafes ban no-good laptop users

It's a trend story, and the trend is that, hurt by the recession, several New York area cafés are now banning the use of laptops. It seems laptop-wielding customers would frequently hog all the space, preventing “real” customers from eating lunch or whatever. So, ban.
