From DVR to On-Demand, more and more TV viewers are choosing when they get to watch their favorite programs. The greater question has been how you’ll be able to get all the other content to your screen — stuff like Netflix and Hulu. If you have an Xbox, the latter problem may be a thing of the past.

Windows Phone 7 pops up on a Samsung prototype device, plays Twin Blades
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft's Joe Belfiore certainly piqued our interest at MIX by demoing Windows Phone 7 on an unidentified Samsung handset, but our excitement soon faded when we found out it was just a hacked-up Omnia i8910 and not a real phone. Still, the Sammy remains only the third WP7 device we've seen other than the ASUS-built test mule and the prototype LG Panther that's been popping up recently after debuting on the Engadget Show, so these two videos of it running a recent WP7 build at reMIX in France is still quite notable -- the OS seems fast and responsive, and we're told everything on the device was functional, including the GPS and camera. What's more, there's a demo of an Xbox Live Arcade / iPhone game port called Twin Blades by Press Star Studio -- it was done in a week by one programmer using 90 percent of the Xbox Live code. That's impressive, to say the least.
Of course, this device may look like an Omnia, but it doesn't have the Omnia's OMAP3 processor -- as per WP7's requirements, the internals have been swapped for a Snapdragon-based board. We're still waiting for Microsoft and its partners to show us some more interesting hardware -- let's face it, the Panther and this Samsung are almost identically boring -- but there's no denying the software itself looks to be coming along quickly. Now let's just hope it launches with enough heat to save Microsoft from another executive shuffle. Last Halo 2 Xbox Live player signs off
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft had tried to shutdown the original Xbox Live servers, but a couple of Halo 2 stalwarts had refused to log off! I guess Microsoft couldn't turn the servers off, or wouldn't, while people were still connected? No matter: the last Halo 2 Xbox Live player has signed off. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

Microsoft, News Corp in talks over Xbox Live channel (but it’ll cost you $1 or $2 extra)

That's what Microsoft and News Corp. execs are currently contemplating, with the two companies in talks over bringing a "young, male" channel to XBL. Now, this is all rumor and speculation, so no need to freak out if you're diametrically opposed to the idea.

Xbox LIVE Terms of Use reverses policy on sexual orientation/identification

Xbox LIVE was previously known to censor or even ban gamers who indicate or even hint they were of an untraditional sexually orientation. This could either be from listing it in user profile or using a slang term in a tag. Of course every time this happened to an avid Internet user, it made headlines across the web, smearing Microsoft's good name.
Microsoft previously stated that the policy was there to protect users from discrimination or harassment, while it actually did quite the opposite. Users were not allowed to be themselves. But Microsoft has finally fixed its error and the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and Code of Conduct has been update to be a bit more friendly.

Microsoft to kill Xbox Live support for original Xbox games on April 15

Rumor has is that this is being done to increase the numbers of friends you can have on Xbox (360) Live. Right now it's at 100 people—a limit imposed by old Xbox architecture—, but clearly you need more.

Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad

The hints were already pretty strong on this one, but now Microsoft has come right out and said it, albeit in a job posting -- the Xbox Live gaming platform is extending beyond the console and specifically onto WinMo phones. Seeking a Principal Program Manager who would be responsible for bringing "Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile," Redmond is particularly interested in "avatar integration, social interaction, and multi-screen experiences." That leaves an awful lot of room for imagination as to how the two modes of gaming will complement each other, but at least we now (sort of) know that it's going to happen.

(You'll recall that Microsoft launched Facebook and Twitter to so much enthusiasm last week.) Mysteriously, Microsoft didn't reveal the number of people who logged into Twitter. Is this the end of Twitter?

You wanna flash the drive on your 360 for whatever reason? Fine, go ahead. But don't think that you can log onto Xbox Live with said modded console, and play your misbegotten wares (or is that warez?), on Microsoft's network. It's against the TOS, it makes a mockery of the entertainment medium that you purport to support, and, well, is unfair to the other players.

Free GTA IV multiplayer this weekend on Xbox Live

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City comes out tomorrow, and to help grease the wheels a little bit, this weekend will be a free-play weekend on Xbox Live for GTA IV. That is, if you have GTA IV but don't subscribe to Xbox Live Gold, you'll be able to play online multiplayer this weekend.
