NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–American Express (NYSE: AXP) has launched Currency (getcurrency.com), an innovative, new online service where young adults can get fun, fresh advice on managing their personal finances. Created in partnership with Federated Media, Currency offers tips and suggestions on saving and spending, and allows visitors to the site to share their new knowledge on social networks and through a newly launched iPhone app: “Social Currency.” Whether seeking career advice, juggling roommate expenses, paying off a student loan, or starting a family, Currency can help today’s young generation better understand and handle its assets.
“We have worked closely with American Express to bring together some of the best personal finance writers, presenting information with a unique perspective particular to this generation’s needs and desires”
“Gen X and Gen Y navigate a financial minefield far different from what their parents faced – and yet often the advice available to them does not meet their needs,” said Pepper Evans Roukas, Vice President, Digital Brand & Social Media Development, American Express. “With Currency, we have brought together best-in-class partners, a youthful point-of-view and voice, and a rich, innovative social media platform to help empower visitors to the site with the knowledge and savvy it takes to attain financial success.”
Currency gives guidance in three categories: “Big Decisions,” “Planning & Savings,” and “Spending.” More than 25 leading personal finance writers will contribute articles to the site, including Matt Gross, a frequent contributor to The New York Times, and Manisha Thakor, CFA and co-author of On My Own Two Feet: A Modern Girl’s Guide to Personal Finance and Get Financially Naked. The site is constantly updating, with an average of 20 articles published each week. In addition, user feedback will play an integral part in shaping and growing content as the site aspires to aid its audience in the most effective ways possible.
The site also features “Social Currency,” a new social media iPhone app that gives Foursquare users the ability to share information and photos related to their spending and saving, including news on recent purchases, “want-to-haves,” and store sales. Users can earn points and unlock badges to tell friends if they are looking for bargains or enjoying a night out on the town. Currency also puts users in touch with each other to share information and financial insight via social media tools.
“We have worked closely with American Express to bring together some of the best personal finance writers, presenting information with a unique perspective particular to this generation’s needs and desires,” said John Battelle, Founder, Chairman and CEO at Federated Media. “The result is sage financial information delivered with flair – and that makes for a resource for all that succeeds in being both powerful and playful.”
Currency, in a partnership with Knowledge@Wharton, the University of Pennsylvania business school’s online journal, also offers online courses that extend personal finance education. The site currently offers six courses including “Managing Student Loans,” “Buying Your First Home” and “Budget for Everyday Life.” Users earn “stars” for completed coursework, and the site features a leader board of users who have earned the most “stars.” Taking the courses requires no special software or hardware.
