–()–WHAT: ISACA, the non-profit global IT governance association, offers experts to discuss its 2011 Holiday Shopping on the Job Survey/Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Security findings:
- As the traditional start of the U.S. holiday shopping season nears on Black Friday, Nov 25, and CyberMonday, Nov. 28, a national consumer survey by ISACA, a professional association of 95,000 IT audit, security and governance professionals, shows increased online shopping this holiday season compared to 2010, and a 15% increase using mobile devices/apps over last year. These findings are from ISACA’s fourth Shopping on the Job survey among consumers who plan to shop online and have a work device (work-supplied or a personal device used for work).
- People are increasingly tech-savvy— mobile application usage has tripled since last year’s survey: 29% click on daily deal sites such as Groupon and 7% scan quick response (QR) codes.
- While close to four in 10 consumers surveyed use PayPal or a similar secured serviced to protect online transactions, they’re concerned about newer features, like a device’s ability to track their location.
- 74% of respondents say they would turn off geo-tracking services on their mobile devices (a feature found in many shopping and mobile apps), and only 14% say the benefits of these services outweigh the risks.
- The survey findings show that more than half of the time spent shopping will be done from computing devices used for work purposes, a trend called bring your own device (BYOD). According to the survey, online shoppers plan to spend 32 hours on average shopping online this holiday season, with 18 of those on a work device or personal device used for work.
- Using personal PCs or mobile devices for work means that sensitive corporate information may be compromised through theft or loss, or malware attacks. It is important for organizations to embrace the technology, while educating employees on the risk.
