Did you know that computers and mobile devices are converging? That’s what a Nokia executive is saying. He also said that his company is “looking very actively” at manufacturing notebooks, thanks in part to the aforementioned convergence.
The big question: would a Nokia netbook run the Symbian OS? Would the company basically make something like a big N-Series Internet Tablet with a full keyboard and a hinging lid or would it go full-bore into notebooks that ran conventional operating systems?
I’d tend to think that Nokia would lean towards using Symbian, making a more netbook-like device. After all, the company is emphasizing convergence – not a Nokia notebook paired with a Nokia phone. It sounds like it’d want to mash the two together. And it’s got experience with portable computing devices, it just appears that Nokia might be shooting for a larger form factor and an emphasis on data versus voice this time.
Whatever the case, Nokia’s sheer size would definitely be to its advantage. Analyst Ben Wood of CCS Insight says, “Nokia maybe nervous about entering a market segment that is already heavily commoditized, but it would be in a position to exploit its enormous scale in manufacturing, supply chain and distribution.”
