    Virgin Mobile’s Broadband2Go prepaid 3G data service made a splash last summer by offering no-contract plans that came close to competing with two-year offerings from the likes of Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. The major drawback was that the top plan, at $60, only allowed for 1GB of data usage, whereas you’d get 5GB on a contract plan.

    As everybody knows by now, Apple ships the iPad in the Wi-Fi version this month, with the 3G subscription-based model following in April (probably). And as it's AT&T that has secured the right to provide 3G connectivity to iPad users in America, you'd think Randall Stephenson, AT&T's CEO, would be the first person to promote sales of the 3G model. But it's Stephenson who is now quoted as saying that he doesn't expect "(...) a lot of people out there looking for another subscription (...)" and that the iPad wil mainly be a "Wi-Fi driven product". He made the remarks during a webcast of an investor conference yesterday, adding the iPhone, on the other hand, will continue to play an important role for AT&T "for quite some period of time".

    AT&T is following Verizon's lead today with the introduction of new prepaid broadband plans targeted directly at netbook and laptop users who find themselves out of WiFi range (and in desperate need of email) every once in a while. The so-called DataConnect Pass plans exactly mirror Verizon's pricing, which means you can get 75MB as a "day pass" for $15, 250MB as a weekly deal for $30, or a half gig per month for $50. Like Verizon, you're far better off getting the 5GB postpaid plan if you're a heavy user here -- but if you find yourself needing wireless once in a blue moon, this may very well be the way to go.     Verizon broadband data goes prepaid

    Heavy users are still going to need the 5GB monthly postpaid option (and really, let's be honest, a lot of us need well more than 5GB), but the occasional "crap, I really have to grab that spreadsheet off the intranet" moment might be well-served by Verizon's new prepaid data option announced today. "Occasional" really is the key word here, because it's not cheap -- $15 per day for 75MB, $30 per week for 250MB, or $50 per month for 500MB -- but hey, we guess we've gotta get Big Red used to the idea of offering a la carte data for a while before it becomes affordable to the masses. In the meantime, it'll be offered bundled with a USB760 modem (pictured) in Verizon and Best Buy locations starting on November 16.

    Introduced at Computex in June, the aptly named Colossus 1TB SSD from OCZ is expected to hit store shelves later this month, says Gizmag. The 14.1-ounce 3.5-inch drive claims to have a read speed of 250MB/s and write speeds up to 220MB/s via SATA2. The RAID 0 compliant drive will supposedly hit store shelves later this month for ~$2500.
