Late Mate for BlackBerry screws with your clock to make you more punctual
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsI run late. Always. The last time I remember being not-late, it’s because I thought the event started 30 minutes earlier than it actually did. I ended up only being 15 minutes early. If you’re a late person (or if you’ve seen that one episode of I love Lucy), you’ve probably heard of the trick where [...] -
Stargate Universe Season 1.5 Blu-ray is announced
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No Comments
The second half of SGU's first season starts this Friday. We already know it should be a good one thanks to the MGM teaser showing off that ugly baddie. But some crazy fans might hold off until June 13 when the Blu-ray is released sans all the commericals and probably with high-quality picture and sound. But that's not me.

Boxee and Redux working to democratize the web
Posted on February 23, 2010 | No Comments
Finding quality video content on the web is hard. There's too much porn, or too many lolcats derivatives, and not enough crazy music videos involving LEGOs. Following John's Posterous is one good way to find serendipitous content you might enjoy, but there's only one John, and he does occasionally sleep. If only someone would make an app to crowdsource my web viewing, so that only the best of the best floats up to my screen. Oh, look! Redux does exactly that. And today they're announcing their new Boxee app, to bring all that great content to your television, so you can passively enjoy all that the web has to offer without all that tedious typing and clicking!

Netgear & Ericsson team up, concoct MBRN3300 3G router
Posted on February 9, 2010 | No CommentsHere's an interesting fact, if you really stretch the definition of the word "interesting." Team CrunchGear often used the Novatel MiFi during CES to bring you all that great content. The concept is simple: it takes a 3G signal and then outputs that signal via Wi-Fi. You then connect to the Wi-Fi network. Instant broadband, cell signal depending, for everyone. The same concept applies to the MBRN3300, a router that's the product of a Netgear-Ericsson partnership.

Video: Star Wars text crashes down on Earth like alphabetical asteroids
Posted on February 1, 2010 | No CommentsI have NO idea how the text from the opening credits of Star Wars made its way to our galaxy. It’s supposed to all be far, far away! And what are the odds that it’d find its way into Earth’s gravitational pull, only to come raining down on an unassuming suburb? If only the Starship [...] -
World of Warcraft’s new dungeon finder just made life worth living again
Posted on December 14, 2009 | No CommentsFor me, the best part of Patch 3.3 in World of Warcraft is the new dungeon finder. I've used it a bunch in the past couple of days, and can say this: PUGing is now fun (though it'll change the way we look at guilds).

Castoven: Microwave with built-in YouTube player (video)
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No Comments
Two researchers from Japan's Keio University (which yours truly attended just until recently by the way) have developed a kitchen appliance aimed at the total web geek in you, a YouTube-powered microwave. The so-called Castoven [JP] is based on a conventional, unbranded model of "good quality" but sports a 10.4-inch LCD screen in the door panel.

Convert a standard outlet to a USB outlet
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No Comments
If you've got a surplus of power outlets in your home, I guess you should probably convert one to a USB outlet. It can be done for less than $10 and apparently only takes about 30 minutes.

Review: Alesis DM6 Drum Kit
Posted on November 13, 2009 | 1 CommentShort Version: The Alesis DM6 drum kit is a full set of electronic drums that is extremely accessible, yet just as difficult to master as the real thing. In un-packing the box it came in, one thing was immediately clear; this is no kid’s toy. This is a nine-piece set (10, if you include the [...] -
BlackBerrys for coppers: UK law enforcement to smarten up in 2010
Posted on October 16, 2009 | No CommentsPolice men and women of Blighty are about to step into the 21st century, albeit a decade late, with a new weapon in the fight against boredom on the beat. The BBC reports that smartphones will become standard issue throughout the Queen's realm by March 2010, as a result of successful trials carried out in 30 constabularies through this year. Improved "operational efficiency" and reduced bureaucracy are argued as the key benefits, with a solid 30 minutes less time being spent in police stations each day. And we're absolutely positive that extra half hour will go toward increased "visibility in the community" and not checking out friends' Facebook status updates. No, really!

Sleep deprived? Just watch this Sharp Netwalker unboxing
Posted on October 1, 2009 | No Comments
Next time I need a nice long nap I'm going queue up this video of some Russian dude going through the Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1. This monster video is 30 minutes long and involves such exciting discoveries as "a Youtube Player," "spreadsheet clicking," and "sniffles on camera."
This video is truly akin to watching an old man try to fold a an old Chik-Fil-A wrapper on the bus: it's vaguely disturbing but more fascinating in its uncontrolled precision.
