Barnes & Noble has just confirmed the NOOK Wi-Fi at $149, and a new lower price for its NOOK 3G model at $199.
Engadget had earlier today posted a screenshot sent in by a reader that effectively showed a Nook WiFi coming out on Wednesday at the now announced price point.

Pantech Ease now official on AT&T
Posted on June 20, 2010 | No CommentsAT&T's latest from longtime partner Pantech has now gone from rumor to reality, bringing another full-touch dumbphone into the fold -- but there's an interesting twist on this one. The so-called Ease is clearly geared toward the older set, packing unique features like a pill reminder and built-in pedometer alongside more common goodies like text-to-speech and voice command. It's got a 2 megapixel camera, slide-out landscape keyboard, 3G, and a 3.2-inch WQVGA display paired with a $69.99 launch price (on contract after rebate, of course) that should make it fairly appealing to the penny-pinching types Pantech's clearly trying to appeal to with this one. It's available today.

HTC Legend with North American 3G now available unlocked
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsSure, the Desire's coming to a handful of regional American carriers later this year, but what if you want the smaller, sleeker, more aluminum-clad Legend? Well, there aren't any carrier-branded options in the States -- but it seems that a number of unlocked units with US 3G bands are starting to ooze out of the cracks. Negri Electronics has an 850 / 1900MHz 3G Legend in its store for a shade under $500, which means you're not getting much of a discount over the more powerful 850 / 1900MHz version of the Nexus One -- but you are getting a pretty sweet unibody shell and an optical d-pad. Any takers?

AT&T: iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sales Were Ten Times Higher Than First Day 3GS Sales

AT&T just issued a statement addressing the massive iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday. The company said that sales of the iPhone 4 were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year.
AT&T also said that they are suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders they've already received. At&T wil resume taking pre-orders when they get more inventory from Apple. Yesterday's chaos also brought more than 13 million visits to AT&T's website to determine if users were able to upgrade to the new phone, which was about 3-times higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day.

HTC Hero gets Android 2.1 update across Europe (update: nope, not 2.1 yet)
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsIt's been a long, painful, drawn-out process, but it looks like we're finally closing in on getting everyone with an HTC Hero around the globe covered with Eclair. The company's European outpost has just posted some details on its Android 2.1 over-the-air update for the 2100MHz 3G Hero sold in most of the continent (including separate builds for units in Nordic countries, Greece, and Ireland), so this should quite a lot of brewing discontent -- just in time for owners to develop a raging case of Froyo envy, that is. C'est la vie; time for a Legend, right?

Update: We've heard from our friends at CoolSmartPhone that this is just another minor update, amazingly -- not the 2.1 build that other Hero owners are enjoying. What gives, HTC?

Just as they said they would, Samsung today announced their second (and third) Bada-powered phone, the Wave 2 (and Wave 2 Pro -- identical, but with the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard).

Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung's bada, heard of it? Samsung sure hopes so as it's betting heavily on the OS in its battle with Nokia to make cheap smartphones globally accessible. Today Samsung is introducing the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) QWERTY slider at CommunicAsia 2010. Both handsets are quad-band GPRS/EDGE (yup, no 3G) with 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, a 3.2-inch TFT LCD, 3 megapixel camera with video recorder, A-GPS, and 80MB of memory with up to 16GB of microSD expansion. The all important user experience is handled by the TouchWiz 3.0 UI and bada's "social hub" that tightly knits together all your communications with contacts, be that over email, IM, or social networking sites. Both phones will be available in Russia and South East Asia starting in August.

Verizon MiFi surgically implanted in iPad to create world’s first bionic tablet
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsSometimes, hackers hack without any constructive purpose -- they do it just because they can. This, however, decidedly isn't such a case; in fact, it's one of the more enviable hackjobs we've seen in recent weeks. Basically, a dude split open his 3G iPad, removed the AT&T modem, and installed the circuit board out of a Verizon MiFi, providing power from the iPad's battery and hooking in the borrowed AT&T antenna for hotspot range. The hack wasn't without its trials and tribulations -- the MiFi's green LED initially shone through the back of the iPad's display, for instance -- but ultimately, the proud owner ended up with a fully functional iPad that doubles as a Verizon WiFi hotspot. It's not exactly turnkey enough to recommend to lay folk, but at least Verizon customers can take heart knowing this kind of craziness is possible if you've got the stones for it.

Nokia E73 Mode review
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsSome two years after its release, there are still plenty of people who'll swear up and down that the E71 is the finest phone Nokia has ever produced -- and for good reason. As a platform, S60 was the product of a simpler time when the smartphone market was dominated not by touchscreens, but by numeric keypads, and the E71 was arguably the last of a string of bona fide successes that Nokia enjoyed in the platform's heyday alongside pioneering handsets like the N82 and N95. Thing is, the E71 was different than those other models in a very important way: it was elegant. Historically, Nokias have typically favored function over form and saved the highest-quality materials for the Vertu line, but the E71 bucked that trend -- it was slim, sexy, chock-full of metal, and curved in all the right places. In fact, to this day, it remains one of the best-looking, best-feeling smartphones ever made.
Customers (and reviewers) made their love for the E71 clear, and Nokia sought to recapture the glory with the introduction of the refined, upgraded E72. For Americans, of course, the biggest problem with the E72 was that you couldn't buy it from a carrier -- and unlike the E71, it never got much traction as an unlocked purchase. That's where the E73 Mode comes into play, a mildly reworked version of the E72 with T-Mobile branding and, of course, support for 3G on T-Mobile's AWS bands. AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? (update: should be back to normal)

This hasn't exactly been a banner week for wireless uptime; Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all seen some trouble over the course of the past few days, and now we're getting tipped that AT&T data services are down once again in the Southeast. Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?

Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:
"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

Garmin-Asus planning another nuvifone for AT&T?
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsIt takes a little bit of creative dot-connecting to follow our thought process here -- but we think we're onto something, so do us a favor and lend us an ear for a second. Garmin-Asus, of course, kicked off its North American efforts with the forgettable nuvifone G60 on AT&T, then just followed it up with the Garminfone on T-Mobile. We'd speculated previously that AT&T might have some sort of US exclusive on the use of the "nuvifone" name, considering that the company strays from that branding in no other market in the world. Additionally, all of ASUS' phones are happening through the Garmin-Asus joint venture right now, so when we found this E600 "PDA Phone" in the FCC this week, we knew right away that we were likely looking at a new nuvifone model. Looking at the filings, we see that it's rocking 850 / 1900MHz 3G, which leads us to believe that AT&T might be ready for round two -- either that, or one of our GSM friends north of the border is looking to deploy it -- but any way you slice it, that G60 is looking pretty long in the tooth.

UK’s O2 to impose 3G data limits for iPhone 4 users

It seems like the entire United Kingdom (at least those who aren't out partying it up with Patsy Kensit at the Met Bar) has emailed us in the last two minutes to clue us in on the fact that O2 has posted its new iPhone 4 pricing. It looks like your beloved "unlimited 3G" plans of are a thing of the past -- instead, you'll be paying for up to 1GB of data of month. As you approach the limit, a text message will notify you and let you purchase an 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10. How very AT&T of them, eh? But don't worry, kids! Texting is still unlimited.

T-Mobile Garminfone now on sale, price still boggles the mind
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsAs promised, T-Mobile has brought the Garminfone to retail today for $199 after $50 rebate on a new two-year contract, calling into question the viability of selling a nav-centric Android device with an HVGA display, 3 megapixel camera, and no 3.5mm headphone jack for $250 out of pocket in the store. We suppose the awesome car dock will attract some, but the myTouch 3G Slide certainly seems like the better option for less money -- maybe this would work at $99 or $149, we suppose. Not that we're impatient or anything, but where's our Froyo update, Garmin?

T-Mobile’s LG Sentio launching on June 30
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsLG and T-Mobile had only been committing to a Summer release for their three-pack of new models, but now we've got a little more guidance on the most notable of the trio. The Sentio -- a low-end full touchscreen dumbphone with 3G and social networking goodies on board -- will be available on June 30 in all channels, so if you're a "connected socializer" aged 16 to 29 who's "in search of their first touchscreen phone," you might have a look. As long as you're cool with navy blue paired with silver accents, anyhow.
