    Layar Launches Store for Augmented Reality Layers

    Augmented reality is being touted as the new hotness. I'm sure most of you have heard of the augmented reality browser, Layar. Basically, Layar offers a window through which to view the world, where handy hints and information are displayed over the top in real-time. The Amsterdam-based company released Layar last year for both Android and iPhone, and a number of interesting "layers" have already made their way into the application. The layers mentioned in that post were created by interested developers, but today, Layar opened up a store for selling layers.

    Estimate: 800,000 U.S. Households Abandoned Their TVs For The Web

    Are you a cord-cutter, or do you want to be? Have you had enough of paying your cable company through the nose for 800 channels, when all you really watch is maybe 20 or 30? With an increasing selection of high-quality TV fare coming online, more people are experimenting with ditching their TVs (or more accurately, their cable and satellite TV subscriptions) for online options such as Hulu, Netflix, broadcaster Websites, or Apple's iTunes. The numbers are still small, but last year an estimated 800,000 U.S. households cut the cable cord altogether, according to a new report by the Convergence Consulting Group. By the end of next year, that number is forecast to double to 1.6 million. Cord cutters don't yet represent a serious threat to the $84 billion cable/satellite/telco TV access industry, which counts an estimated 101 million subscribers. But they are a leading indicator of the shift to TV viewing on the Web. The cord-cutters make up less than 3 percent of all full-episode viewing on the Web. The rest comes from people who are only beginning to watch occasionally online. An estimated 17 percent of the total weekly viewing audience watch at least one or two episodes of a full-length TV show online. Last year, that percentage was 12 percent, and next year it is forecast to grow to 21 percent.

    What TiVo needs to do to make the Wall Street boys happy (and survive)

    TiVo can't catch a break. The company just rolled out its next-gen platform and then finally ended a long court battle with Dish Network, causing its stock to surge to new heights. This all happened within the last two weeks. But then last night the company announced its sad Q4 2009 financials. You already know the problem. TiVo is having a real tough time signing up new customers and retaining current ones as content providers keep pushing their low-price DVR options. The company only managed to net 46k new subscriptions in the last months of 2009, bringing the total headcount to roughly 2.6 million. That's down from the 4.36 million subs TiVo had in January 2006. TiVo ended up losing $10.2 million during the fourth quarter even though revenue improved 16% to $68.5 million. It's sort of sad, actually. DVRs have lost their magic the last 10 years as cable companies offer cheap alternatives with smaller feature sets and none of the trademark TiVo charm. But TiVo can't die yet. I'm not ready to live in a TiVo-less world. The company must work on these three items in order to survive the next decade.

According to Ubisoft's financial release this morning, Assassin's Creed III will be released in fiscal year 2011, which begins in April 2010. It was previously thought that this would only be an expansion to Assassin's Creed II, but Ubisoft has confirmed it is a new title featuring Ezio, and will have an online multiplayer mode.

    Curse Raises $6 Million As It Looks To Become The Ultimate Gaming Resource

    Most people would probably view a hardcore, 16 hour-a-day addiction to World of Warcraft as a bad thing. That was certainly the case for Hubert Thieblot a few years ago, when he dropped out of school and his parents decided to kick him out of the house because he was playing so much. Flash forward five years. Thieblot has managed to turn his addiction into a thriving company called Curse that generated over $3 million in revenue this year. Today, the company is disclosing a $6 million Series B round it closed in early 2009 with participation from Ventech Capital, AGF Private Equity, and SoftTech VC (Jeff Clavier). The round brings Curse's total funding to $11 million, after a $5 million Series A round in 2007 led by AGF Private Equity. In some senses, Curse is akin to a SourceForge for computer games, in that it offers a directory of plugins that players can use to customize and enhance their PC games. Many of the site's users are World of Warcraft fans, who have made Curse.com the definitive site for WoW add-ons. Alongside its directory, Curse also makes a native client players can use to manage their plugins.

    Mobile web usage sees another upswing (Opera)

    Browser maker Opera has released its latest 'State of the Mobile Web' report this morning, claiming that there was a huge surge in mobile web usage past September. Last month, more than 35.6 million people used Opera Mini (which is now serving over 500 million pageviews per day on average on a wide range of mobile devices), up 11.5% compared to August 2009 and more than 150% compared to September 2008. The Norway software developer also claims more than 2 petabytes of data is now processed by its servers on a monthly basis. That'd be 2,000 terabytes.

    AT&T’s third quarter earnings come up all roses

    AT&T has come clean with its third quarter earnings today, and on paper, it seems like big ol' Number Two doesn't have much to complain about as far as cash flow goes. EPS comes in at 54 cents, 4 cents more per share than the consensus estimate; revenue was up from the prior quarter (though down a bit from the same quarter a year ago) and they clocked in 2 million net adds, 1.4 million of which were postpaid. That now leaves AT&T with a staggering 81.6 million subs, 6.7 million more than a year ago. Meanwhile, 4.3 million new phones were activated on the network -- 3.2 million of which were iPhones, AT&T's best quarter ever for iPhone activations -- which might actually be perceived as a bad sign for the company seeing how it stresses how heavily reliant it is on Apple's baby for customer conquests. Data continues to be a heavy focus with data-focused revenue up 33.6 percent from the same period last year, and for everyone's sake, we hope that every cent of that revenue is going right back into the network.

    OLED TV shipments to increase 200% by 2015, but to remain a small niche market

    You would be hard pressed to find an OLED TV in any brick and mortar retailer besides the Sony Store right now. The technology is amazing, but they just aren't available yet and that might not change soon according to a iSuppli report. The TVs are too small and the prices are too high to gain any real traction. But, as we all know, that will change as the display tech evolves. However, don't expect to see a wall full of OLED because the LCD market isn't slowing down.
