Horizon shipping their cheap fuel cell
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No Comments
Now this is good news - provided there isn't a fuel cell hydrogen spill somewhere off the coast of Nova Scotia tomorrow. Horizon has been promising their liquid fuel cell for years but now they're actually selling them. It costs $100, comes with two fuel cartridges, and offers as much power as "1,000 AA batteries," allowing you to charge almost anything using add-on adapters.

Review: Energizer Recharge Smart Charger
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No Comments
The last time I paid attention to rechargeable batteries was probably back in the early 1990s. We had this huge recharging tech that allowed you to recharge all sorts of batteries - none of which we owned - so we were limited to recharging the D cells we had and used in, as I recall, some kind of remote controlled boat.
Anyway, Energizer has brought the battery charger into the 21st century by adding an LCD display that shows current charge level and, get this, hours left until a full charge.
There's not much to say here. You can charge AA and AAA batteries - not at the same time - and the $19.99 kit includes four AA batteries, which is nice.

BR-800 digital recorder from BOSS
Posted on March 24, 2010 | No CommentsField recording sessions are fun, but there’s a pretty large gap between the low and high ends of the gear. You either get a handheld stereo recorder, or have to haul a mess of interfaces and preamps with your laptop. But this multi-track recorder from BOSS fills in that gap nicely with a very versatile [...] -

The original iPad: The Cambridge Z88
Posted on February 10, 2010 | No CommentsRetrothing has a paen to the Cambridge Z88, a clever little device made in 1987 that ran for 20 hours on four AA batteries. Via Sony’s bio-battery: RC cars can now be powered by sugary drinks
Posted on January 21, 2010 | No Comments
Sony has been working on the development of efficient bio-batteries since 2007, but the company hasn't really come close to commercialization so far. The batteries, which exist as prototypes, can be recharged not by using methanol as fuel but glucose. And it makes sense, as a single bowl of rice contains the same energy as 96 AA batteries.
And using the bio-battery in real products might soon become reality, it seems. This week, Japanese toymaker Takara showcased a few radio-controlled toy cars that are powered by the Sony battery. Power is generated by using enzymes to break down glucose found in sugary drinks. Cola, juice, soda and sports drinks can be used, as long as the liquid contains around 7% glucose.

Stocking Stuffer: PowerGenix NiZn rechargeable batteries
Posted on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
There’s a fine line between giving regular batteries as a gift and giving rechargeable batteries as a gift. Giving someone regular batteries is a dumb gift. Might as well give them a sheet cake. Either way, the gift is a consumable and doesn’t last long. Rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, last quite a bit longer.

Real tools. Motorized, mechanized, battery-using tools. Take this Cordless ear wax cleaner, for instance. It’s only ten bucks and it runs on AA batteries.
