iFixIt tears down the Kin Two
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsI know you’ve been wondering what’s in the Kin Two since it first came out and now you can see the phone’s delicious innards up close. iFixIt tore it up and found an Nvidia Tegra processor, which is nice, and “two very cool springs.” Where did they hide the magical unicorn hoof shavings? * The Kin [...] -
Video: Palm WebOS, meet laptop
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsNow, it’s not the mystical HP webOS tablet we’ve all been dying for for what feels like forever (read: two weeks), but it’s a step in the right direction. PreCentral forumgoer cdowers managed to hack webOS onto an old Dell laptop they had laying around — and surprisingly, this “hack” didn’t really require all [...] -
Cellbots get Nexus One upgrade, ad-hoc motion control (video)
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsSprint and Verizon may have shunned the Nexus One, but that doesn't mean the handsets can't be put to good use: these Android-controlled, Arduino-powered Cellbots now feature the one true Googlephone as the CPU. At Intel's 2010 International Engineering and Science Fair in San Jose, we got our hot little hands on the DIY truckbots for the first time, and found to our surprise they'd been imbued with accelerometer-based motion control. Grabbing a Nexus One off a nearby table, we simply tilted the handset forward, back, left and right to make the Cellbot wheel about accordingly, bumping playfully into neighbors and streaming live video the whole time. We were told the first handset wirelessly relayed instructions to the second using Google Chat, after which point a Python script determined the bot's compass facing and activated Arduino-rigged motors via Bluetooth, but the real takeaway here is that robots never fail to amuse. Watch our phone-skewing, bot-driving antics in a video after the break, and see what we mean.Continue reading Cellbots get Nexus One upgrade, ad-hoc motion control (video)

Posted on April 30, 2010 | No Comments
I know you're peachy-keen to start devving for the new Symbian^3 platform.
"The what?" you ask, as if this is the first you've heard of the Symbian^3 Web Development Kit.
You've made a website before, haven't you? Maybe you're even a web developer? Well, aren't you glad to know that the dev kit for Nokia's latest-and-greatest OS uses your favourite languages: HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
You'll be even happier to know that today Nokia removed that ugly "Beta" tag from the kit.

New Android app helps you if you’ve fallen and can’t get up
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No CommentsAndroid phones save lives. Or they could, if they had this application installed. Let’s say grandma is walking around the house with her Droid in the pocket of her house coat, and she falls down. Luckily, you installed the iFall application. It uses the accelerometer in her phone to tell you that she fell down, [...] -
The Nokia N8, Nokia’s new flagship phone, is official
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No CommentsEvery year, like the swallows returning from Capistrano or the tourists returning to Disneyworld Paris, Nokia releases a flagship phone. Sadly, the boatwrights at Nokia haven’t dropped a winner in nigh on three years now and, if early reports are to believed, their new N8 is not looking seaworthy. The N8 looks like the Motorola Devour [...] -
Use your laptop to detect the next big earthquake before it happens
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No CommentsIt's pretty great that people are just now realizing that Planet Earth isn't some sort of static strip mall. There are volcanoes, and earthquakes, and hurricanes, and tornadoes, and tsunamis—objects from outer space regularly invade the atmosphere. This planet is alive, brother! So, idea: you know how certain laptop models, like ThinkPads and MacBooks, come with built-in accelerometers? They're there in order to protect the hard drive from a devastating fall, but what it you could use said accelerometer to detect an earthquake before it happens?

If you're interested in getting into mobile development, you should probably check out Bug Labs. Their BUG system is a modular collection of snap-together components to rapidly prototype a new mobile device. The BUGbase is the backbone -- think of it like the mainboard of a traditional PC -- into which you can connect a GPS, touchscreen, accelerometer, etc. It runs Linux, and is programmed with Java. At Mobile World Congress today Bug Labs is making the big announcement of version 2 of their product, which supports Android. You can port existing Android apps to run on the BUG hardware, as well as develop new Android apps. Full press release inside!

The Qisda QCM-330 is gorgeous, headed for Vodafone, and quite possibly Android-powered
Posted on February 8, 2010 | No CommentsWhen it comes to bar-shaped smartphones, it takes a good amount of effort to design something visually appealing. There’s really only so much you can do with a flat slab – and whatever can be done likely already has. With that said, there’s just something about this handset, the Qisda QCM-330. I’m not sure what that [...]
