Acer Liquid gets early Android 2.2 ROM, unstable CPU unlock (video)

Nexus One, EVO 4G, Droid and Dream sure, but the Acer Liquid? Yes, the underclocked Snapdragon slate that never made it stateside has just received its own Android 2.2 port. Though still in early alpha with no Wi-Fi or camera functionality and plenty of bugs to boot, the freshly frozen yogurt has the Liquid turning tricks already -- with very playable-looking framerates in Raging Thunder II and Flash video support. Early adopters note that the phone isn't terribly stable at higher CPU frequencies, so don't expect to push that processor much higher than stock, but even 768MHz is reportedly nice and snappy when you're running Android 2.2. Acer Stream preview at Computex 2010
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsWe've seen Acer's Android 2.1-powered Stream a time or two before, but we couldn't resist the opportunity to give it a look ourselves here in Taipei. Acer's full gamut of smartphones were out on display, but this 3.7-inch monster was easily the standout. Build quality was remarkable, and the screen was downright luscious; viewing angles on the AMOLED panel were nothing short of incredible, and the haptic feedback was a nice touch, too. The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU handled the transitions within the OS with poise, and it actually felt a good bit lighter than some of the other touchscreen-based smartphones that we've played with recently. 'Course, we couldn't help but long for Froyo, but with a hardware set this powerful, we wouldn't be shocked to see it handed down shortly. Vid's after the break, vaquero.

Acer Liquid E Ferrari Special Edition revs up Android 2.1
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsSure, the Acer Liquid E Ferrari Special Edition features the the same underclocked 768MHz Snapdragon and Android 2.1 as the original Liquid E that launched in February, but, well, this one comes with a flashy Ferrari F1 Red paint job and matching Elite Bluetooth earpiece. Can't say no to that, can you? You know the rest of the drill: 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen, five megapixel camera with autofocus, geotagging, and adjustable ISO, included 8GB microSD card, and the Acer Sync app that syncs changes across your phone and PC. No word on price or availability, but it certainly looked pretty on the Computex show floor -- we'll let you know if we find out more.

Stream sits still for the camera, shows off its camcorder abilities (video)
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIn these halcyon days of impromptu Vietnamese gadget reveals, it should come as no surprise that Acer's Stream has gone from FCC filing to hands-on honey in a few days flat. Now it's been the subject of a rather more thorough photo shoot in Ho Chi Minh City, and also was kind enough to share a little footage filmed from its five megapixel camera. Sadly, it's not raw 720p footage that was YouTube'd, so it's perhaps too early to draw conclusions -- but we'll go ahead and say the video doesn't look very good just the same. Still, it looks to be yet another intriguing entry to the Android assault, and we can't wait for the next leak.

Video: Acer gets all official with their 1GHz Snapdragon- and Android-powered Stream
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsToday Acer officially announced their latest Android handset, the Stream (coz a whole lotta Liquid makes a Stream). The device will rock Android 2.1 UI atop a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7" 800x480 AMOLED screen, 5MP camera with 720p video, 512MB RAM, 2GB on-board storage (+ an 8GB MicroSD card), and the usual connectivity options (ie WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, HSDPA, GPS). So, yeah, pretty much the standard "high-end" Android device.

Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsIf for some reason none of the current Android slates have tickled your fancy, not the Nexus One nor the Droid Incredible nor even the Evo, maybe Acer's Stream is for you. It sports Nexus One-like specs, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and 512MB of RAM. It's five megapixel camera can record 720p video and it can also play back content at the same resolution with support for Xvid, WMV HD, and others. There's an HDMI port on-board in case you want to bring that content to the big(ger) screen, and it'll even act as a DLNA and UPnP streamer on WiFi, with dedicated play/pause, fast-foward, and rewind buttons. This could be the most media-friendly Android smartphone we've yet seen, and that it's already made its way into the hands of a previewer (as shown in the favoloso video after the break) and has passed FCC scrutineering is a very, very good sign that this could be serving up your home media collection soon.

Acer ‘Liquid Stream’ S110 scores FCC approval: Android, 720p video recording
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsSo a new Android-powered handset from Acer popped up at IO last week -- the so-called "Liquid Stream," which would presumably succeed the Liquid and Liquid e in Acer's lineup. AndroidGuys is reporting that the phone is currently running Android 2.1 (which we'd hope would morph into 2.2 by release) paired with a Snapdragon core and a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video capture, so it's the "5.0 Megapixel HD 720p" inscription on the back of the diagram in this FCC filing for a phone called the Acer S110 (along with the obvious similarity in shape) that's allowing us to deduce that these two bad boys are one and the same. Android France has it pegged for October -- and it's got 850 / 1900MHz HSPA, so we could theoretically see a few land in North America by the time this all shakes out. Who's interested?

Sales of netbooks and CULV notebooks expected to increase this year

It looks like people are still buying computers. Research firm iSuppli Corp believes that netbooks and Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage (CULV) notebooks are poised for significant growth in 2010. Notebook PC shipments overall are expected to hit 209.5 million this year, up 25.5% from last year. In particular, sales of netbooks, or smaller and cheaper versions of a notebook, are expected to grow 30% to 34.5 million units. Meanwhile, CULV notebooks are expected to reach sales of 14.5 million units this year, a whopping 93% increase.

PC sales are finally recovering

Someone is buying computers. Connecticut-based research firm Gartner said PC shipments are up 27% to 84.3 million units in the first quarter, surpassing most analysts' estimates. Helped by sales of all-in-one designs and touch screen displays, it seems the PC market has bounced back from the year-earlier period when sales dropped almost 7 percent to the lowest levels since 2001. Intel, which recently reported strong earnings for the quarter, forecasted a rise in sales and a rebound in technology spending. Sales in emerging markets played a key role in this recovery.

Microsoft in hot water over China factory conditions
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No CommentsYet another scandal coming out of China relating to its factories. Last time it was Apple that got in trouble, now it's Microsoft. An undercover investigation, carried out by the National Labor Committee over a period of three years, discovered that several factories there, including ones used by Microsoft to produce things like webcams and mice, were treating their workers like garbage. “We are like prisoners. It seems like we live only to work. We do not work to live. We do not live a life, only work.”

Android Coming Soon to an x86-based Phone Near You

While not the first to do it (that title goes to Acer), Intel has now ported Android to the x86 architecture. While the obvious application for this is tablets and netbooks, Intel has said that they have it running on smartphones based on their Atom line of processors. Most smartphone processors are based on the ARM architecture, while Intel's processors on the other hand are typically x86 based. By porting Android to the x86 architecture, Intel are clearly trying to make a name for themselves in the smartphone market.

Nicholas just voiced a valid question in the always-entertaining but private CrunchGear chatroom, "Why would I pay $1,500 for a Core 2 Duo in 2010?" He then answered it by saying, "I wouldn't." Well said, sir. Apple's current crop of notebooks are a slap in the face to its customers, but maybe Apple will finally catch up to HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, Alienware, Asus, MSI, Sony, and Toshiba next week if this rumor pans out.

HP and Dell say the 10-inch netbook market is getting too crowded

Despite the boom in netbooks in recent years thanks to a poor economy and cash-strapped consumers, a recent Digitimes article reported that HP and Dell are actually reducing their investments in the commoditized 10-inch netbook market. In fact, HP is considering quitting the 10-inch segment altogether to focus on its 11.6-inch AMD notebooks as the Intel Pine Trail netbooks have not been very profitable.

Dell stumbles, almost drops to #3 in the top PC manufacturers

Bad news for Dell. Despite the fact that it's looking like IT spending is increasing, Dell is still suffering from lackluster sales. iSuppli, the company that tracks worldwide PC shipping, reports that in the ongoing battle for dominance in the PC marketshare, Dell has staggered, and almost slipped down to number three.
