CEATEC: ALPS sends data through the human electric field

ceatec2009-alps-01ALPS, the folks that mainstreamed the touchpad way back in the day, are continuing to innovate. Now they're playing with electric field transmissions, which allows the human body to act as a communication medium. Video inside!

Three years later, the PS3 outsells the Wii (in Japan)

It only took Sony three years for it to get its act together! The recent introduction of the PS3 Slim was, as you know, a pretty big success, and today we have another metric: for the first time ever, the PS3 outsold the Wii in Japan last month. Everyone party!

These are the worst sci-fi costumes ever

You better act fast if you don't have a Halloween costume. I'm still debating mine: it's between being an Apple fanboy (dress up as an apple (with green trousers and shoes to keep it real), then wear a fan as a hat) or a death panel board member, which will play well in super liberal Manhattan. (Health care joke! Tip your waitress.) What you don't want to do, however, is dress up like any of these guys.

    Hands-on with the Panasonic GF-1 M4/3 camera

I’ve been excited about four-thirds cameras for a while now. They seem like a great idea - DSLR power in a point-and-shoot package. However, after the Olympus E-P1 I’m worried that manufacturers are treating these cameras as beta hardware and the real models won’t be stable for a few years. That said, I’m still interested [...]

iPhone users: This virtual girlfriend will never leave you (video)

There are a number of Tamagotchi-style apps for the iPhone out there, but now Tokyo-based Xtone gives us Amamiya Momo, a virtual catgirl girlfriend that lives in your iPhone, speaks to you and expresses emotions (there are English subs for when she speaks Japanese). You can use the GPS function in your iPhone to let Momo know when you're home and when you're out. She will act cuter in the first case and can be quite cold in the latter. Even though Momo doesn't want to be touched, you can pat her head, touch her cheek and even try to look under her skirt.

    Sasquatch Lives!

Remember those holograms we saw during the presidential election? It was just like the hologram of Princess Leia that R2D2 shows to old Ben Kenobi, except suckier.
