Facebook launches free mobile access site for emerging markets… and Denmark
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No Comments
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Facebook_launches_free_mobile_access_for_emerging_markets'; Following in the footsteps of Coca-Cola, Facebook is seeking to feed your addiction with a new zero version of its online service. 0.facebook.com leads users to a stripped down, text-only version of the social site, which will incur no data charges from your carrier. Of course, you won't be able to access any other sites or rich media without paying for it, but at least the core functionality of reading your friends' witty status updates and writing satirical responses will be there free of charge. This service is being rolled out primarily in the so-called emerging markets, though more mature environments like Belgium, Denmark and Finland are also present on the list (available after the break). SFR in France, 3 in the UK, and Australia's Telstra are also going to be joining in soon. Guess it's just a matter of finding a pliable carrier to accede to offering the minimal bandwidth necessary in exchange for being Liked by Facebookers.Continue reading Facebook launches free mobile access site for emerging markets... and Denmark

This young man willingly gets an Apple tattoo. And you call us fanboys?
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No Comments
Look, I love my iPad as much as the next guy and, just like the next guy, if I had to make the choice between food and water and the iWork suite, I'd probably go for the iWork suite. However, I would not tattoo the Apple logo onto my shoulder.
Billy Hime, a self-professed "iPhone Owner," "shameless flirt," and "Youtube Video Blogger" filmed himself getting his tattoo with his mom. He also wrote on Twitter that "Lotion=burning my Apple," a comment on what we can only assume to be the effects of the antiseptic on his tattoo and not a euphemism for something else.

Curse Raises $6 Million As It Looks To Become The Ultimate Gaming Resource
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Comments
Most people would probably view a hardcore, 16 hour-a-day addiction to World of Warcraft as a bad thing. That was certainly the case for Hubert Thieblot a few years ago, when he dropped out of school and his parents decided to kick him out of the house because he was playing so much. Flash forward five years. Thieblot has managed to turn his addiction into a thriving company called Curse that generated over $3 million in revenue this year. Today, the company is disclosing a $6 million Series B round it closed in early 2009 with participation from Ventech Capital, AGF Private Equity, and SoftTech VC (Jeff Clavier). The round brings Curse's total funding to $11 million, after a $5 million Series A round in 2007 led by AGF Private Equity.
In some senses, Curse is akin to a SourceForge for computer games, in that it offers a directory of plugins that players can use to customize and enhance their PC games. Many of the site's users are World of Warcraft fans, who have made Curse.com the definitive site for WoW add-ons. Alongside its directory, Curse also makes a native client players can use to manage their plugins.
