Samsung plans to double its smartphone share by end of year, jump ahead of HTC and Motorola
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsMore than 10% of worldwide smartphone market share: that's where Samsung plans to be, on triple its current handset volume, by the end of 2010 according to Lee Donjoo, senior VP of the company's Mobile Communications division. Mind you, such a jump would be staggering in terms of growth with Samsung owning less than 5% of global smartphone market share currently. A move to 10% would place them at number 4 globally according to IDC's numbers, behind Nokia, RIM, and Apple. The Android-lovin' Galaxy S / AT&T Captivate is good, but is it that good? We'll see. Regardless, the term "smartphone" can be defined many ways, and we suspect that Samsung's new Bada OS being pushed into devices previously classified as featurephones could help pad Samsung's numbers.Samsung plans to double its smartphone share by end of year, jump ahead of HTC and Motorola originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 04:40:00 EST. No pre-order? AT&T won’t have an iPhone 4 for you until June 29
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
The thinking all along was that there'd be an allocation of unreserved iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn't bother to (or couldn't) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement -- Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities -- but basically, there's no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you've got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Follow the break for AT&T's full statement.Continue reading No pre-order? AT&T won't have an iPhone 4 for you until June 29

With all eyes on WWDC, AT&T makes some changes to their plans and lineup. Again.
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsIt’s official, AT&T has sold out of the 8GB iPhone 3G. But that’s not as exciting as the clue provided to us by AT&T about its replacement and the iPad’s soon-to-be-dead unlimited plan. BGR is saying the departing 3G model will be replaced with a $99 3GS soon after the new iPhone is out. And the [...] -
Nexus One gets USB host driver from a dude with an oscilloscope (video)
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsFor Sven Killig, running Android 2.2 wasn't enough. No sir, this dude wanted even more power for his Nexus One, so he went ahead and penned a few lines of code that have allowed his Googlephone to act as a USB host. As a result, he can now do cutting edge stuff like plugging in USB keyboards and webcams, as well as more useful things like watching movies off USB sticks or connecting to a monitor via a DisplayLink USB-to-DVI adapter. All these features are demonstrated in the video after the break, and you'll find the downloadable binaries at the source -- Sven expects them to work on Android 2.1 as well.Continue reading Nexus One gets USB host driver from a dude with an oscilloscope (video)

Stream sits still for the camera, shows off its camcorder abilities (video)
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIn these halcyon days of impromptu Vietnamese gadget reveals, it should come as no surprise that Acer's Stream has gone from FCC filing to hands-on honey in a few days flat. Now it's been the subject of a rather more thorough photo shoot in Ho Chi Minh City, and also was kind enough to share a little footage filmed from its five megapixel camera. Sadly, it's not raw 720p footage that was YouTube'd, so it's perhaps too early to draw conclusions -- but we'll go ahead and say the video doesn't look very good just the same. Still, it looks to be yet another intriguing entry to the Android assault, and we can't wait for the next leak.

Boost Mobile confirms it’s getting the Motorola i1, basically
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsLet's be honest -- there was never any real doubt that Boost was going to share the Motorola i1 with parent Sprint, especially after Best Buy went ahead and threw it up early. That said, if you still needed a little extra confirmation just to sleep better at night, look no further than this tweet today from Boost Mobile's official account saying it "is launching an ANDROID next month" and imploring that we all "spread it like wildfire." They don't mention what device it'll be, but clearly it'll be the i1 -- so consider the message spread like wildfire, Boost. Where you at?Boost Mobile confirms it's getting the Motorola i1, basically originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 28 May 2010 21:04:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Verizon’s BlackBerry Bold 9650 seems like it’s coming soon (this week?)
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsWe know, Tour owners -- you're so ready for a little WiFi in your life that you could quite literally scream. Go ahead, let it out! There, doesn't that feel better? No? Well, maybe this will: new shots out of The BlackBerry Zone suggest that Verizon sales reps are being actively trained on the Bold 9650, adding to a trail of evidence over the past month from a variety of sites that the phone is coming shortly. It certainly should, considering the relative importance of BlackBerrys in Verizon's lineup and the fact that Sprint now has it at retail, and it's still possible that documentation on CrackBerry last month pointing to a May 27 release -- that's this Thursday, for the record -- is accurate. We'll know soon enough, but in the meantime, treat those old trackballs with care, alright?

Radio Shack stores getting WiMAX upgrades ahead of Evo launch?
Posted on May 22, 2010 | No CommentsWhile there's certainly plenty to love about HTC's EVO 4G, that 4G in the title is certainly one of the major draws. We're guessing it'll be a little easier to sell the things if customers can experience the wonders of WiMAX for themselves, so that's probably why RadioShack is (according to our tipster) installing these Clearwire WiMAX repeaters in at least some of its stores ahead of the May 30 launch of the phone there. This will effectively turn The Shack into 4G hotspots and, while we're not sure of the range of these bad boys, this is a good thing even if it extends the reach of WiMAX just a few feet further into our lives. Another picture after the break.

As much as I'd love to claim the scoop is ours, the LA Times are actually the ones who got the word on what the first Natal games are going to be. All we have is a few names, but they sound promising.
