Of course there should be a digital picture frame and alarm clock
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No Comments
I'll just say it. Everything is better with a digital picture frame. If someone put a digital picture frame in a toaster, I would buy three. So with that in mind, imagine my excitement when I saw this Insignia alarm clock with built-in digital picture frame. I know, right? Awesome. </sarcasm>

Motorola Motus AT&T rumor gains momentum
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No CommentsWe can't confirm the details here, but we've received some pretty in-depth information about the Motorola Motus' possible launch on AT&T that would seem to largely corroborate what we've been hearing so far:
- Sure enough, the keyboard flips backwards so that it's facing out when the phone is "closed." When it's open, the underside of the keyboard has a trackpad that allows you to scroll the screen while typing with your thumbs (it's unclear how well this'll actually work in practice). There's also a third hinge position that keeps the phone upright -- perfect for use as a video display or alarm clock.
- There's a 5 megapixel cam and LED flash mounted on the keyboard (notice that white spot in the lower left?) designed to be used as a webcam, but we don't know whether this'll function as a traditional 3G video call (we'd doubt it) or over some other service.
- It runs Blur. If you like Blur, congrats; if you hate it, our condolences.
- The keys are backlit and said to be "domed" -- that's not really conveyed in this spy shot we've seen, but it's hard to say for sure.
- It's said to be about three-quarters of an inch thick, "enough to be bulky in your pocket."
- Our tipster says he thinks he was told it runs Snapdragon, which would run counter to our current intel that has it running the CLIQ's 528MHz MSM7201A. At any rate, he says it "seemed very responsive," which is a good sign.

Prank Pack fake gift boxes double up on holiday cheer
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No Comments
Just a friendly reminder that these “Prank Pack” fake gift boxes exist for your amusement. Be careful, though, as you run the risk of disappointing the person who opens the gift. I mean, how would you feel if you thought you were getting travel coffee mugs with built-in walkie talkies only to open the box to find a pair of argyles or a dumb Red Robin gift card?

Clockman: Japanese alarm clock has its own personality (video)
Posted on November 16, 2009 | No Comments
Japan sure has a penchant for weird alarm clocks, as we blogged many times in the past. And Clockman, a new model from major Japanese toy maker Takara Tomy, isn't really normal either. Reasons: It looks creepy, it can speak, its eyes and mouth can move and Takara Tomy says it even has a personality and "blood type" (seriously).

Toys (backwards R) Us Black Friday ad
Posted on November 15, 2009 | No CommentsI have no backwards R key on my keyboard and I don’t have the wherewithal to figure out the tricky Wingdingy ALT+numpad+four digit code voodoo it’d take to produce it (if it’s even possible), so let’s just say “Toys R Us” and enjoy the store’s Black Friday ad. Stores open at midnight – yes midnight – [...] -
Droid experiencing external speaker problems, could be a software issue?
Posted on November 15, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Motorola, Android
It's no reason to panic just yet, but apparently a good amount of people are having trouble with the external speaker on their Motorola Droid cutting out for no reason. It seems to be software-related, and sometimes a reboot fixes it temporarily, but it's a scary problem for people relying on the handset as an alarm clock (or, you know, to receive calls), since you never know when it will strike next. For its part it seems that Motorola is replacing handsets that have the issue, though that's no guarantee of escape from the clutches of silence. Let's hope Motorola updates us with a software patch or some other serious solution soon -- people need to hear that robotic "Droooiiid" alert sound -- and meanwhile let us know if you've been seeing a similar issue.

Review: idox Traveler Series iPod touch case
Posted on November 11, 2009 | No Comments
Short Version: As the owner of an iPod touch (2G), I was happy to give this case/stand a spin on my recent trip over to Ireland. Generally speaking, the case provided adequate protection of the touch (albeit leaving the top and bottom slightly exposed), was very handy for watching videos on the plane, and worked great for transforming the touch into a bedside alarm clock. With a MSRP of $34.95, I'd love to see the price come down a touch (zing!), but overall, the idox Traveler Series is a respectable case/stand combo choice.

Public Radio App lets you resume ‘This American Life’ whenever you please
Posted on November 4, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Multimedia, Software, Apple, iPhone OS
Now that you've got an NPR-lovin' stereo in your bedroom, the only thing missing in your otherwise completely fulfilled life is an NPR application that enables you to listen to your favorite programs whenever, wherever. If we just rung your bell, you can now drift away and die happy. Available this very moment in the 100,000-strong App Store is the Public Radio App, which essentially acts as a DVR for the iconic station. Once fired up, the app can "pause and rewind public radio streams from NPR, PRI, APM and local public radio stations," and there's even an alarm clock setting that wakes you up with your favorite public radio stream. Unfortunately, on-demand streaming is still a pipe dream, but there's nothing to stop these guys from adding that very feature in the next iteration. Go on -- try and lay off the trigger. It's not like that awfully low $2.99 price point is tempting or anything.Public Radio App lets you resume 'This American Life' whenever you please originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 13:02:00 EST. The Flurry Alarm Clock is a luddite’s Chumby
Posted on October 20, 2009 | No Comments
You know the Chumby, right? It's that bedside clock/alarm/radio/YouTube & Flickr open source thingamabob. It's hella cool, but it's also kind of complicated for the non-techy and requires WiFi to work. I say blah to that! Really the only extra info you need to know in the morning besides the time is the weather anyway. That's where the Flurry Alarm Clock from Ambient Devices comes in.
