Skype Mobile with video support coming to Android Market later this year?
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsSkype's PR folks have been unusually loquacious today, as they've responded to a query about whether HTC's EVO 4G would get a Skype client with a deep and meaningful forward-looking statement, underpinned by a promise of an Android app "for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers." This universally available addition to the Market should arrive "later this year," but what's important about it is that it's preceded by a lengthy spiel about Skype's ambition to "set the bar on mobile video calling," which it also intends to do this year. Does this necessarily mean that Skype video calling is coming to Android in time for us to wish granny happy Hanukkah over video chat? No. Is it a well constructed insinuation to that effect? Hell yes. Read the full statement at the source, or find the juiciest excerpt after the break.

Eric Schmidt Presides Over The Marriage Of The 50-Year-Old TV And The Teenage Web
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Comments
"We've been waiting a long time for today," says Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who is presiding over a power panel of CEOs helping to make Google TV possible. The panel, at Google I/O, includes the CEOs of Sony, Best Buy, Echostar, Adobe, Logitech, and, of course, Google. He needs all of them, as well as developers, to make his new Google TV a hit.
Google TV will be built into a new Sony TV coming out this fall in time for the holiday shopping season, as well a Logitech TV companion box which can be hooked up to existing TVs with an HDMI port. It is Google's attempt to bring together the 50-year-old TV-watching experience with the Web. It does that in a variety of ways, from a universal search box which searches both TV and the Web to opening up the TV as an application platform for developers and media companies to enhance their video offerings. Its ambition is to bring the Web into the TV in a new way.

Blio seeks to take digital reading in a new, more inclusive, and colorful direction
Posted on December 29, 2009 | No CommentsAs if we didn't have enough pretenders in the ebook space, here's Ray Kurzweil with a new format of his own and a bagful of ambition to go with it. Set for a proper unveiling at CES in a week's time, the Blio format and accompanying application are together intended to deliver true-to-life color reproductions of the way real books appear. Interestingly, the software has been developed in partnership with Nokia, in an effort to turn Espoo's phones into "the smallest text-to-speech reading devices available thus far," though apps are also being developed for the iPhone, PC and Mac. The biggest advantage of this format might actually be behind the scenes, where the costs to publishers are drastically reduced by them having to only submit a PDF scan of their books, whose formatting remains unchanged in Blio. We'll be all over this at CES, but for now you'll find more pictures and early impressions over at Gizmodo.Blio seeks to take digital reading in a new, more inclusive, and colorful direction originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 06:32:00 EST. LG to finally sell that dumb phone watch for $2,000
Posted on July 7, 2009 | No CommentsRemember that stupid LG watch phone from CES? It’s on its way! The $2,000 watch will run on GSM networks and will “turn heads on High Street” provided you’re also wearing assless chaps. T3 writes: The touchscreen watch phone is joined with a Bluetooth headset and video-calling capabilities, along with HSDPA internet for high-speed web browsing. The CEO [...] -
WTF: GameStop selling Nintendo Wii bundles with rubber ducks, water guns
Posted on July 3, 2009 | No CommentsThis has to be a viral campaign of some sort, but seeing as though we're on the cusp of a three-day weekend I'll bite. GameStop is selling three unusual Nintendo Wii bundles that, I don't know, belie all logic. There's the “Take a Bath With a Buddy” bundle, the “Pirate Tattoo” bundle, and the “Summer Fun” bundle. Yeah.
