Posted on November 12, 2009 | No Comments
Woot.com has a pretty good deal on the refurbished 11.6-inch Gateway LT3103 for $280. This machine opts for an AMD processor over an Intel Atom, so you’ll get a little extra oomph while giving up a couple hours of battery life.

Video: Kohjinsha dual-display netbook
Posted on October 29, 2009 | No CommentsI actually like this idea. Kohjinsha recently showed off its dual-display 10-inch netbook, which runs Windows 7 atop an AMD Athlon NeoMV-40 CPU at 1.6GHz. The machine can be used as a netbook with a standard 10-inch display (it’s a swivel, screen) or a second 10-inch display can be slid out from behind the first [...] -

Posted on October 15, 2009 | No Comments

Looks like it’s Splitsville for NVIDIA and Intel
Posted on October 9, 2009 | No Comments
That NVIDIA and Intel haven’t been getting along lately isn’t big news but it looks like NVIDIA has finally gotten up from the dinner table and left the restaurant in a huff. The epicenter of the problem appears to be NVIDIA’s Ion chipset, which provides some much needed oomph to netbook and nettop platforms. Intel wants to keep a distinct separation between its low-power, low-cost Atom chips and its more-capable Pentium chips. When NVIDIA’s Ion is added to an Atom platform, the extra power makes Intel’s higher-end (and higher-cost) CPU offerings a tougher sell.

Windows 7 upgrade time tops out at 20+ hours
Posted on September 12, 2009 | No Comments
If you’re thinking of upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 later this fall, set aside some time – especially if you’ve got a lower-end machine with a bunch of applications already installed and a hard drive full of files. One of Microsoft’s own engineers clocked in a 1220-minute upgrade time on just such a machine.

AMD-based MSI Wind coming soon, touchscreen tablet next year
Posted on August 26, 2009 | No Comments
MSI's got a 12-inch Wind netbook rolling out to the US in the next few weeks. The U210 will feature an AMD CPU, though, which ought to place it in direct competition with Gateway's LT3100. We can probably expect to see shorter battery life (the LT3100 promises five hours) in exchange for some extra power over Intel's Atom offerings.

Intel apparently backing off low-resolution netbook rules
Posted on July 13, 2009 | No Comments
Hot damn, netbooks are about to get a bit more useful. Apparently Intel has backed off on the whole low-resolution netbook screen thing. Previously, computers containing N-series Intel processors (Atom N270, N280, etc.) could only have screen resolutions up to 1024x600.

AMD’s Atom killer won’t be here until 2010
Posted on June 8, 2009 | No Comments
AMD CEO Dirk Meyer recently revealed that his "company is currently developing a platform that features lower-power, smaller-sizes, more complete functionality, and a cheaper price than Intel's Atom for netbooks," according to DigiTimes. Sounds great. The fact that AMD owns ATI should make for an awesome mish-mash of processors and graphics. So let's start rolling these things out, eh?
Whoops, not so fast. The platform won't be ready until next year.

HP dv2 being refreshed with new AMD Neo setup
Posted on June 5, 2009 | No Comments
Don't count AMD as being out. In response to the ever growing netbook/small laptop market, AMD has announced their new CPU "Congo", along with putting it into the updated HP Dv2 which is coming out on June 10th. We liked the original Dv2 — however, adding a little more grunt to it with the improved AMD processor can only be a good thing.
It looks like MSI is getting set to launch a 12-inch Windows 7 netbook from its U200 series. You'll recall that the company released
