iPhone 4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super AMOLED… fight!
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/iPhone_4_Retina_Display_vs_Galaxy_S_Super_AMOLED_fight'; If the title of this post isn't enough to entice you, we don't know what else to say. We've gone and run some sunlit comparisons between Apple's brand spanking new phone's Retina Display and Samsung's equally fresh and exclusive Super AMOLED panel on the Galaxy S. We don't know if we'll be able to settle the argument, but we're certainly going to subject both superphones to an expansive visual inspection. Follow us after the break for video exploration of this most pressing topic.Continue reading iPhone 4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super AMOLED... fight!

Exclusive: Samsung Captivate for AT&T preview
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsAT&T may have been accused of crippling its Android phones, but the Samsung Captivate -- one of the US versions of the Galaxy S -- is about to change all of that. Oh sure, the company released the specs last week, but us resourceful folk got some hands-on time with the Super AMOLED-boasting, Android 2.1 phone prior to its unknown stateside launch. The model we got to play with was clearly an early build (it wasn't even branded Samsung or AT&T), but that didn't stop us from putting it through the paces at a local Starbucks. Hit the break for a bulleted breakdown of our impressions and a short hands-on video. Oh, and don't forget to make a pit stop at the gallery below before getting into the good stuff.Continue reading Exclusive: Samsung Captivate for AT&T preview

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 caught on video looking like a giant cellphone
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsReady to see Samsung's 7-inch Tab tablet do its thing on video? Sure you are. However, this isn't the same Galaxy Tab that we saw in the picture teased by Samsung. First of all, it has a different collection of Android-friendly "buttons" along the bottom and seems to be void of Samsung's TouchWiz UI skin. It's also carrying a P1000 model number. Well, at least the 7-inch Super AMOLED remains the same. See the quick action go by in a blur after the break.
P.S. The dialer pictured above seems to confirm that the Tab can be used like a giant phone. No, really. We've heard this previously as rumor but didn't believe it until now. The second video perfectly illustrates the reason for our concern. [Thanks, Saad]Continue reading Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 caught on video looking like a giant cellphone

Samsung Galaxy S gets torn down, looks equally beautiful on the inside (video)
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsYou'll be hard pressed to find a sane individual who'd argue that Samsung's Galaxy S isn't a lust-worthy piece of kit on the outside, and after watching the video past the break, we doubt you'll get too many takers on proving things unsightly within. Equipped with a Super AMOLED display and a bit of that Hummingbird goodness within, there weren't too many bits and pieces to tear apart. What was found, however, leaves a new appreciation for steady hands. Go on, give it a look-see -- the real deal will be out and about before you know it.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy S gets torn down, looks equally beautiful on the inside (video)

Samsung: iPhone 4’s retina display is nice, but it’s no AMOLED
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS, Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world's biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, but sucks down a wasteful 30 percent more power. Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that "structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology." And here we thought Samsung and Apple were getting along so well.Samsung: iPhone 4's retina display is nice, but it's no AMOLED originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 19:41:00 EST. Samsung i8330 ‘H2′ for Vodafone leaked?
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsAt the time of its release late last year, Samsung's H1 for Vodafone's then-new 360 service represented some of the sweetest featurephone hardware that money could buy, thanks to a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen, WiFi, 5 megapixel autofocus cam, and 16GB of onboard storage. Those are still killer specs, but it's always onward and upward with these guys -- so we're not surprised to see rumors of an H2 model surface. Like the H1, this new handset (apparently with internal model number i8330) is said to run LiMo (release 3 this time) and packs an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and HD video capture, 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, and a WVGA Super AMOLED display. Super AMOLED sounds like a gimmick until you actually see a display in the flesh, then you realize that it's the real deal, so this phone could make some waves; it's tapped for launch before World Cup soccer starts next month, so we could see an announcement any minute now.Samsung i8330 'H2' for Vodafone leaked? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 27 May 2010 14:31:00 EST. Samsung’s AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsIf you want the dish on what's happening with mobile displays, Lee Woo-jong, VP for marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, is as good a person to ask as any. The chap has been telling the Reuters Global Technology Summit that his company has finally gone into the black with its AMOLED production line, and that its research projects a 50 percent jump in smartphone shipments in 2010 relative to 2009. This is expected to boost demand, which is already exceeding supply, for high-quality displays. Samsung says shortages might be experienced all the way until next year, but has reiterated its belief that AMOLED is the future with a $2.15 billion investment into expanding its production lines, while also predicting a 30-fold growth in shipments of such displays by 2015. Every handset out there looking like the Wave? We could learn to live with that.Samsung's AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 20:03:00 EST. Samsung (Bada-Powered) Wave to Launch in North and South America?
Posted on May 4, 2010 | No Comments
Samsung may be a little crazy to create their own OS when Android is free, powerful, and popular, but that doesn't mean that I'm not at least a little curious about what the new OS may bring.
On that note, you may be interested to hear that the first of Samsung's Bada-powered phones -- the Samsung Wave 8500 -- may be making its way over from Europe to come visit your hometown*.

Leaked: Is this the Samsung Moment2 for Sprint?
Posted on April 6, 2010 | No Comments
Oh, Sprint Moment; we hardly knew ye. You were just announced in October of last year, right as Android 2.0 made its grand debut. And yet, there you sit, still holding on to Android 1.6. Before you've even had the opportunity to dance in the up-to-date spotlight, it looks like Samsung is already working on your replacement.
