    WWIV, Wildcat, Celerity -- these hallowed names represent the best of a golden era of communication, back when "getting online" meant tying up the family phone line, remembering arcane Hayes AT codes to maximize performance out of the 9600 baud modem your dad borrowed from work, and TradeWars was the best multiplayer game available. Yes, I'm talking about Bulletin Board Systems, originally text based and later augmented with ANSI graphics. The first public BBS celebrated its birthday yesterday, and I think it's a fair bet that few of us would be engaging in discussion today if it weren't for that simple little computer bulletin board in 1978. Why even our esteemed leader John Biggs ran a bulletin board system for a brief while!

    Toyota’s fixing recalled pedals with just a small metal shim

    Toyota just starting rolling out accelerator fixes to its dealers. The fix itself doesn't actually seem that hard as Autoblog and Aol Autos found out at LaFontaine Toyota in Dearborn, Michigan. (Fun Fact: Ford's HQ is in Dearborn) The process is just popping out the pedal and figuring out what size shim needs to be insert in the recalled pedal. After that, a system diagnostic is ran and the customer drives away. Hopefully the Prius's brake software issue is just as quick fix.

The application -- easily downloadable from your device or iTunes -- features a whole bunch of useful features such as offline viewing, built in streaming for The Engadget Show, in-app tipping (you know, for when you see the next iPhone), and all kinds of customization options.     Even better than this? We've got more apps on the way! Before CES (fingers crossed), you should see both a BlackBerry and webOS version of the Engadget application, and plans for the Android version are already in motion.
