iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWelcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London's getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we'll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn't mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you've done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.
Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!
Update 2: NY joins the fray!
Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.
Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!
Update 5: London's doors have swung open and we're now busy activating our brand new Apple phones.
Update 6: Woz and his Segway make their regular appearance at the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store.
Update 7: We're adding a bunch of reader reports. Even as Apple opens its doors to pre-orderers in the US, the lines remain crazy.Continue reading iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)

Live From The iPhone 4 Launch At SF’s Flagship Apple Store
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No Comments
It's finally here. After months of anticipation, the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 is upon us, and dozens of people are currently lined up in front of San Francisco's flagship Apple store to get their hands on one. Unfortunately, not everyone is fortunate enough to live close to an Apple Store (or has the time to go stand in line at this ridiculous hour). Which is why I'm braving the early morning once again to give you all a vicarious taste of Apple's devotees at their finest.
I'm equipped with a Nexus One live streaming with Qik. Last time I faced this line during the launch of the iPad, I had an Apple sticker covering the Nexus's Google logo to throw any particularly rabid Apple fans off the scent. Unfortunately it seems that I've exhausted my supply of Apple stickers — this could get nasty.

iPhone 4: One man’s heroic video journey
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsThe iPhone 4 comes out today. I knew when I woke up this morning I felt a disturbance in the Force! Anyway, John Biggs, noted gumshoe, is en route to the fancy Apple store in Manhattan to pick up his very own device, and he's been been sending us surprisingly funny video updates of his journey. Come, let us view these videos over a spot of tea.

Steve Wozniak spotted camping out overnight in San Jose for his iPhone 4
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No Comments
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is no stranger to waiting in line outside of the Valley Fair Apple store in San Jose; He found his way to the front of the line for the launch of the original iPhone, and then joined it again for the subsequent launches of the iPhone 3G S and the iPad.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Woz is camped out at that very location right this second, awaiting the launch of the iPhone 4.

Surprise! Some pre-ordered iPhones will arrive on June 23rd
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsBack on Saturday, we did a quick post letting iPhone 4 pre-orderers know to check their inbox, as their iPhones had likely just hit the delivery truck. We warned, however, that just because they were on their way didn’t mean that they’d be getting them early, citing Apple’s tendency “to have tricks up their sleeves [...] -
Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders? Update: AT&T pre-orders too?
Posted on June 19, 2010 | No CommentsWe haven't verified exactly what's going on here, but we've gotten several tips tonight from people who've received an iPhone 4 pre-order cancellation email from Apple saying that their order couldn't be authorized. That sounds like an AT&T authorization problem to us, and given the the litany of problems that Apple and AT&T had all week dealing with the huge number of pre-orders, we can't say we're too surprised to hear that the chaos continues. Here's the email:
Uh, yeah. We're obviously looking into the situation, and we'll let you know what we find out.Dear Customer,
We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.
We apologize for this inconvenience.
Sincerely,
Apple Online Store Team
Update: We're hearing that some people are getting cancellations from AT&T, as well -- curiouser and curiouser.

Apple: Sorry about all the failed iPhone 4 pre-orders, but we definitely had a good day
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsApple just released a tiny little message about its 600,000 pre-orders. First, it crowed that it got 600,000 pre-orders and then it apologized for, um, sucking the life out of the economy while people at work kept pressing the “Continue” button over and over again in a Skinner-esque effort to make the damn site work. Apple suggesting you head into a store if things aren’t working out online
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsOh, to be tapped into the conference call going on between Apple's and AT&T's server tech teams right now!
Update: Seems folks have been seeing this message intermittently since the wee hours -- first time we've seen it here, but then again, we've seen no fewer than five or six unique failure modes today. Quite a sight.Apple suggesting you head into a store if things aren't working out online originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:51:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone 4 pre-orderers overwhelm servers, world on the brink of ending
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsLook up at the sky -- is it falling? It sure seems as if that kind of doom is imminent, at least if this whole iPhone 4 pre-order situation is any indication of future tragedy. We've received hundreds of tips this morning from friends near and far that iPhone 4 pre-orders aren't going through, though a few of us here on staff were able to get a confirmation during the wee hours of the morning. From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 is experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T's servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple's own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option is... um, working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the inability to select a white model. Let us know how your experience has been in the poll and comments below, won't you?
Update: So, it sounds like Best Buy is taking pre-orders (even for white units), but chances are remarkably high that you're not actually getting in any line. Still, it's a working option for the moment. In other news, the Apple Store app is seeming to allow iPhone 4 orders, but it looks as if they're reserving off-contract phones (read: full price ones), so we'd only recommend this avenue if you enjoy things like "arguing about contract dates" and "yelling at brick walls." We're guessing you'll be doing both on the 24th.
