  • iPhone 4 pre-orderers overwhelm servers, world on the brink of ending

iPhone 4 pre-orderers overwhelm servers, world on the brink of ending

Look up at the sky -- is it falling? It sure seems as if that kind of doom is imminent, at least if this whole iPhone 4 pre-order situation is any indication of future tragedy. We've received hundreds of tips this morning from friends near and far that iPhone 4 pre-orders aren't going through, though a few of us here on staff were able to get a confirmation during the wee hours of the morning. From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 is experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T's servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple's own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option is... um, working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the inability to select a white model. Let us know how your experience has been in the poll and comments below, won't you?

Update: So, it sounds like Best Buy is taking pre-orders (even for white units), but chances are remarkably high that you're not actually getting in any line. Still, it's a working option for the moment. In other news, the Apple Store app is seeming to allow iPhone 4 orders, but it looks as if they're reserving off-contract phones (read: full price ones), so we'd only recommend this avenue if you enjoy things like "arguing about contract dates" and "yelling at brick walls." We're guessing you'll be doing both on the 24th.

  • Apple Store app arrives in Apple App Store

Apple Store app arrives in Apple App Store

This is one of those things that makes you wonder why it hadn't been done already. Apple's just unleashed an Apple Store application for its iDevices designed to pretty much give you the online Apple Store experience -- but perhaps without the crazy on-again, off-again antics of this morning. All that's required is a device with iOS version 3 or above, and you'll be able to read reviews, locate local brick and mortar Stores, check out new and featured products, and -- importantly -- buy or pre-order the latest goodies Steve and co have bestowed upon these lands. Alas, we tried to do just that with the iPhone 4 and were met with the familiar "we'll be back soon" message. So the app might work, but Apple's store is still struggling.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

P.S. - The app looks to be US-only for now. Sorry world, Apple doesn't love you enough.

  • Gasp! AT&T stops selling the iPhone 3G because they’re “Out Of Stock”

Gasp! AT&T stops selling the iPhone 3G because they’re “Out Of Stock”

The horror! Days after the Apple Store pulled sales of the iPhone 3G from their online market, AT&T has disclosed to employees the iPhone 3G is now "Out of Stock". Employees are being told to direct customers to the iPhone 3GS. The fact that Apple's WWDC, the birth place of all new iPhones, goes down in 3 days is, of course, a complete coincidence.

Brits Queue Round The Block As The iPad Goes On Sale In London

The UK has been gripped by the launch of the iPad if the Twitpics are to be believed. As you can see from the below ( thanks jasonlan and joanikin) there was a large crowd queuing outside Apple's flagship London store on Regent's Street, in a line which literally snaked around the corner into Hanover Square. Believe me, that is a long line. Some estimates have put the crowd at around 500 people outside, waiting to grab the iPad.

  • iPhone 3G missing a ’select’ button on Apple Store, might not be long for this earth

iPhone 3G missing a ’select’ button on Apple Store, might not be long for this earth

Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Usually if something's out of stock on the Apple store it will just say so, along with a projected time of delay, but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand.

    [Thanks, J]

Apple changes its tune, will now accept cash for the iPad at the Apple Store

Who didn't see this coming? A few days ago we learned of one woman's inability to buy an Apple iPad with cash at an Apple Store. Store policy was such that they would only accept credit cards or debit cards. Apple was totally in the right legally, but it came across sorta funky, particularly given the woman's backstory. Well, after a few days of bad press Apple has changed the policy: you can now walk into any Apple Store and buy an iPad with cash.

Apple doesn’t accept cash at the Apple Store, not even for an iPad

A human interest story, brought to us by the fine people at KGO-TV in San Francisco. It goes something like this: a woman had saved up for a very long time to buy an Apple iPad. So goes into an Apple Store, tells the clerk that she'd like to buy an iPad, then whips out the requisite $600. Six-hundred in cash, mind you. Then the Apple clerk drops a bombshell: sorry, but we don't accept cash here.

  • Wi-Fi Sync app rejected by Apple, headed to Cydia for $9.99

Wi-Fi Sync app rejected by Apple, headed to Cydia for $9.99

Can't say we're surprised to hear that Apple rejected Greg Hughes' Wi-Fi Sync app. You know, the app that allows you to wireless sync your iPhone / iPod touch with iTunes without having to USB tether to your computer. Messing with Apple's synchronization technology is a pretty big no-no as demonstrated by Palm's webOS bluff. Here's the rejection as explained by Greg from an unnamed Apple rep over the phone:
"While he agreed that the app doesn't technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns."
So while you won't find it in Apple's App Store, it will make its way to Cydia as expected for a cool $9.99. You have jailbroken your device haven't you? Don't make us get all MuscleNerd up in here.

  • Apple sued over wetness indicators

    Apple sued over wetness indicators

It's been a tough few hours for Apple. First their iPhone XXX 4G HD ]I[ gets stoled and then they get sued for those little dots inside iPhones that turn red when exposed to water. Inside the headphone jack and under the iPhone cable port are two little dots. If you go into an Apple Store to have your phone repaired and they see those things are red, you're sunk. The Genius will shake his head, slowly, tut-tutting through thin lips at your foolishness. Well, some folks are angry at Apple for refusing to service their potentially bewetted iPhones. However, those customers are claiming their iPhones never got wet.
