Apple: White iPhone 4 Won’t Be Available Until Second Half Of July

Apple just released a statement saying that the white iPhone 4 will not be available until the second half of July due to manufacturing challenges. It's unclear from the statement what those challenges are.
Apple said that the shortage of the white iPhones will not affect supply of the more popular black models. But for those of you who were pining for a white device, you will have to wait until the second half of July. The iPhone 4 was available for pre-order in Black starting June 15. At that point, it was assumed you'd be able to purchase the white model of the phone in stores on June 24.

iOS to make its desktop debut with next iMac revision?

The deal is that Apple wants to bring touch controls to its desktop offerings, and will use the next iMac revision to test the waters a bit. So, you'll have your standard Mac OS X installation, but then when you activate “touch screen mode,” you'll switch over to iOS.

Well, this is not encouraging. The photo you're seeing above is our leader Joshua's iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on the back of the phone. While we don't have any better photos of it at the moment, Josh told us that they're hard to see unless in bright light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made of Gorilla Glass. We'll get some better photos for you as soon as humanly possible.
Update: We should note that while iFixit has said that the new iPhone's front panel is made of Gorilla Glass (and they tend to be right about these things), the material on the back of the phone has not been positively identified, though it is also a hardened glass.
Update 2: We've added three higher quality photos after the break, and seen the scratch with our own eyes. Looks Like Apple Is Suing HTC (Again)

It appears Apple has filed yet another patent infringement lawsuit against HTC and its subsidiaries.
From the looks of it, the new suit, which was filed earlier this week in the same Delaware court as the initial lawsuit filed in March 2010, is adding two additional patents to the twenty the Cupertino company alleged were being infringed upon by HTC.
As the court documents (embedded below) show, Apple mentions four of its patents in the suit. However, two of them had already been included in the initial suit, and it appears like they are being re-included because of some spelling errors that were made by the USPTO.

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but Best Buy has just gotten around to confirming that it won't have any stock of the white iPhone 4 come launch day on Thursday -- the same situation that both AT&T and Apple itself are in. For many buyers, it's not a big deal -- either they don't mind the black version, or they'd planned on buying black anyway -- but for others, this is putting a significant crimp on the launch day festivities. We reached out to Apple and got this:

Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsOne of Google's favorite pastimes is shoehorning bits of new functionality into Google Maps for Android, probably because... well, because it can -- updating a package on its own mobile platform is a heck of a lot easier than, say, getting Apple to add a feature to its Maps app. To that end, version 4.3 has just rolled out with three major additions: aggregated (and color-coded) business reviews broken down by topic, transit system departure times, and suggested friends for Latitude. We'll admit, we occasionally forget that Latitude exists, so this seems like a timely addition to get it back into the spotlight -- and if you live in New York, Chicago, or another city with a sprawling bus and subway system, we're sure you'll be amped about the schedules. Now if those times were actually correct, that'd be really mind-blowing.

Some iPhone 4s Begin Arriving A Full 2 Days Early

As you may have read last night, Apple started emailing people who pre-ordered the iPhone 4 to let them know that it may arrive a day early. While the rest of us have to wait for June 24, those who opted to get the device delivered, should get it as soon as tomorrow, the email says. But actually, if FedEx's tracking system is correct (and that may be a big "if"), some people may actually get the iPhone 4 today.
As you can see in the screenshot, FedEx is alerting some customers that the iPhone 4 is "On FedEx vehicle for delivery." In this particular instance, this is an iPhone that has been sitting in Oakland for a day, so it's not clear why it would be on a FedEx truck unless they were actually delivering it. Others on Twitter are seeing the same thing.

Apple sold 3 million iPads in 80 days; 11,000 iPad apps now available

Apple has sold 3 million iPads in 80 days, according to a release issued by the company today. The statement also reported that there are 11,000 iPad apps available for the device.
On May 31, Apple reported that it had sold 2 million iPad, showing that the company has sold one million more tablet devices in less than a month. The company only started shipping units to customers in countries outside the United States in late May, which could account for the faster growth in sales.

Google setting up music store later this year, looking for search and Android synergy
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsRemember that chart that pointed out the differences between Google, Apple and Microsoft? Well, it's looking increasingly like Google is intent on filling any and all gaps in its portfolio. Those good old unnamed sources have been talking, originally to CNET last week and to the Wall Street Journal today, and disclosing Google's supposed intent to introduce its very own music store. This would initially encompass a web store where you can stream or download tracks, with a search tie-in that'll get your money into Google's pocket in the fastest possible way. Subsequent plans are said to include Android integration in 2011 -- something that Google rather nonchalantly demoed at its I/O conference last month. Of course, none of this is as yet confirmed, but it looks like Apple and Google will be competing across yet another front -- hold on tight.

Apple’s Small Problem: iOS 4 And iPhone 4 One-Up The iPad

The tech world is buzzing about iOS 4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system that Apple released today. And rightly so -- it's an improvement over the previous version in every way. In fact, once you've been using it for a while, it's hard to go back to using iPhone OS 3.x. And there's an unfortunate casualty there: the iPad.
I've been using developer builds of iOS 4 (then called iPhone OS 4) for weeks now. I've grown very used to using things such as the new app switcher and folders. In fact, I've grown so used to using them that when I switch back over to the iPad now (running iPhone OS 3.2), I can't help but feel that it in some ways seems antiquated. Yes, I know that's ridiculous for a device that's not even three months old yet. But the feeling lingers.

We don't work at Walmart, so we can't verify this one for ourselves, but our tipster says Apple's latest phone has just landed in the big box retailer's storehouses.
P.S. -- Before you start frothing at the mouth, the CDMA coding on the box in the background relates to an LG 290C handset also stocked by Walmart.

PSA: iPhone 4’s FaceTime won’t use your voice minutes
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No CommentsWe can't even imagine the uproar that AT&T and Apple would be dealing with if FaceTime calls -- which travel over WiFi alone -- siphoned minutes out of your cell plan's voice bucket, but fortunately, that's a doomsday scenario we'll never need to worry about because it's now been confirmed that they're totally minute-free. What's more, when you start by initiating a voice call, it ends as soon as you switch from voice to FaceTime -- so you won't be charged for the portion of the call that's conducted over FaceTime in that case, either. Of course, as long as FaceTime is an iPhone 4 exclusive, it's going to be pretty limited in scope -- but once other vendors start getting in on the open standard (if "standard" is an appropriate term here) it'll get a lot juicier, we suspect.

Five things to know about iOS 4.0

Welcome to the future, or at least like the first five minutes of it. iOS 4.0 should be available now for iPhone 3GS and newer (post 2009) iPod Touches. Do you have an iPhone 3G or (shudder) the first iPhone? You're SOL, my Luddite friend. Go back to the commune, you hippie.
I kid, I kid. Why spend the money if you don't need to and besides, we've been playing with iOS 4.0 for a few weeks now and here are our initial comments.
1. Multi-tasking is still in its infancy - Apple gave developers very little time to really go full-bore on the problem of multi-tasking. As a result, you're basically dealing with a form of proto-multi-tasking that may or may not do what you want it to do. MG wrote about this last weekend:
The component that all of these apps share is the ability to do fast app switching. What you may traditionally think of as multitasking isn’t the same on iOS 4. Multiple apps aren’t running all of their functions in the background at once — obviously, this would take up resources and eat up battery life. Instead, Apple allows third-party apps to do certain functions in the background now, as well as create an easy way for all apps to save their states to enable this fast app switching.
So you're not going to go all Minority Report on your apps. You'll be able to switch out of one app - a game, say - to hit a GPS program, but there is no definitive guarantee that you'll be able to swap back into the game where you left off. In fact, Backgrounder, a jailbroken app for background activity, works better than multi-tasking in iOS 4.0 right now.
