Walking and jumping and generating energy, oh my
Posted on February 22, 2010 | No CommentsSometimes I'm assigned stories and I'm like, "Really? If you insist, boss." This is one of those stories. It's a collection of sidewalks, or derivatives, that "work while you wait." Yup.

DIY: Eco-responsible super fridge
Posted on August 17, 2009 | No Comments
One of the problems with modern society going "green" is that many of our appliances are inherently inefficient. Take for example the refrigerators and freezers that many of us use. A vertical fridge/freezer combination just isn't that energy efficient, even if it is "energy star" rated. Most fridges waste upwards of 365 kWh a year. So what can be done?

Anvil Motion cabinets: crazy cool and crazy expensive
Posted on August 6, 2009 | No CommentsI’ll seriously try to withhold any jokes about us becoming lazy or references to Asimov’s Three Law of Robotics in this post. Also, I’ll try not to talk about how people like you and me will never ever have a system like this installed in our homes. With all that out of the way, I [...] -

Mechanical Cheetah Walks With Grace
Posted on July 13, 2009 | 1 CommentAfter some 60 hours of wizardry with steel and used parts, artist Andrew Chase has created a mechanical cheetah that evokes the grace and power of its real-world counterpart. “She’s constructed out of electrical conduit, used transmission parts, disemboweled household appliances, 20-gauge steel and a lot of fender washers,” says Chase. The 24-inch tall cheetah measures about [...] -

Eco-friendly Clayton iHouse on sale, coming to a highbrow trailer park near you
Posted on May 7, 2009 | No Comments
Clayton Homes, a US-based company which makes and sells manufactured (prefab) homes, is getting in on the i-naming game with their latest bit of construction. The iHouse is a prefabricated, customizable house that is so energy efficient that Clayton estimates it costs about $1 per day to cover all of its electricity and heating needs. The house makes use of solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, thick walls, heavy insulation, a rainwater-catching system, a tankless water heater, and dual flush toilets to meet its eco-friendly goals. The company, which sold about 30,000 manufactured homes last year, thinks that the iHouse could quickly come to represent about 10 percent of its business. Prototypes of the house -- which at around 1,000 square feet costs $140,000 completely furnished -- are popping up all over the US, and as of last Saturday, are officially on sale nationwide. One more photo after the break.

Domestic visionary Dyson’s totally square kitchen
Posted on May 5, 2009 | No Comments
James Dyson, the man who single-handedly transformed the vacuum cleaner from a symbol of domestic oppression to an object of techno-lust, is back on the scene with not one, but a whole coterie of kitchen appliances designed to save space -- by sticking 'em in a box. No longer must Americans stand for tea kettles shaped like tea kettles, toasters shaped like toasters, or for juicers... you get the idea. What's more, these guys are all designed to work together: controls are uniformly placed on the top or front panels, with devices sharing common power supplies. As it stands, this is all currently little more than a story dreamt up on the basis of a patent, fodder for a slow news day, and something which neither Dyson nor his colleagues commit to actually making a real reality -- even if patent US 2009/0095729 tells us a different story. But what the hell? A guy can dream, right?

Poll: Do people actually like 3D movies and games?
Posted on March 4, 2009 | No Comments
Two new studies, one from the Consumer Electronics Association and the Entertainment and Technology Center at USC and the other from Meant to be Seen (“the foremost authority group on stereoscopic 3D gaming and home entertainment”), suggest that consumers -- that is, average people like you and me -- dig 3D movies. Wearing glasses to enjoy 3D content is not seen as a big impediment, and 40% of the participants reported that they would prefer to watch a film in 3D rather than watch the same film in 2D.

Review: 3X Remote Backup Appliance
Posted on January 23, 2009 | No Comments
The flag of Amsterdam has three Xs on it, typically believed to signify the three major threats to the venerable city: fire, flood, and plague. Modern medicine has pretty well wiped out the Black Death, so maybe a modern interpretation of that last X could be "data loss". Ironically enough, 3X Corporation offers a remote backup appliance that could eliminate this fear.

PogoPlug NAS Adapter takes it to the next level
Posted on January 12, 2009 | No Comments
I enjoyed using the Addonics USB NAS adapter: it was easy to use, and did a few simple things quite well. Now PogoPlug is entering the NAS fray, and takes things to the next level of simplicity. More details inside.
I've been wondering how long it'll be before we start talking to all our appliances and gadgets, just like the gang on Star Trek talks to their computers. Typing, pressing buttons, waving wands around in the air: it's all so inefficient! We should be able to simply speak to our gadgets to have them do our bidding. Today we're one step closer to that golden Utopia, with Moshi, the voice controlled alarm clock. Fun video inside!
