Hai Karate! The Black Belt Watch is for black belts only

Remember those watches made out of pieces of the Titanic? Or that watch with the little moon lander on it? Well Yvan Arpa, the nutso horologist behind those treats has finally hit the a new level of crazy. Homeboy is a has a black belt and, in order to honor his fellow black belts, he's created a watch just for black belts. It's a watch for black belts only. And it costs about $4,000. App Store gets 100,000 approved apps

Keep in mind, 100,000 approved apps doesn't mean 100,000 GOOD apps, but according to the App Shopper, a major milestone has been hit. There are a few technicalities though.

‘Unique’ Bluetooth banana has truly limited applications

    Filed under:

Some products require no explanation. Take this "Unique Banana Shaped Bluetooth Handset," for example -- either you get it or you don't, but no amount of marketing, advertising, or sweet-talking is going to get a skeptic to appreciate its brilliance. If you're still reading this, maybe -- just maybe -- you fall into the "I need this, particularly at just $17.70" camp, and for you, take heart in the knowledge that you can be just 2 to 5 business days away from talking on a simulated piece of fruit that's connected to your phone via Class 2 Bluetooth 2.0. When's the last time you heard "standby time" quoted for a banana, anyway?

    [Thanks, Larry]

Augmented reality browser Layar now available for the iPhone

Half an hour ago, I just had an iPhone 3GS. Now, I have an iPhone 3GS with Layar installed. It was one of the main questions I had for the Dutch company, which markets an augmented reality browser, when they launched at the Mobile 2.0 Europe event in Barcelona last year. When would they be complementing their Android program with an application for the iPhone? They said it'd come in the fall of this year, and while there have been a number of AR applications made available on the App Store in the meantime, Layar's finally arrived a couple of hours ago and it's worth a second look. The TC50 Backstage Interviews: Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller

Seems I’ve also been roped in by Sarah Lacy to act as gopher and occasional co-host for her backstage interviews with some of the event’s more interesting experts and pitchers. First up was Penn Jillette, fresh off stage from pitching the Penn and Teller iPhone app. The application essentially lets you text Penn & Teller after which they’ll perform some magic over the air. The way they do it is by fooling users into thinking they’re using iPhone applications to contact the magicians, but what it really uses is an overlay that mimics the iPhone interface. Nifty, ey?

    OpenTable launches on Android

Back when OpenTable launched on the iPhone in November of last year, one of the very first comments we got on the story was from a gent named Chris. “Unless it’s on Android, it’s useless,” it read. Good news, Chris! OpenTable is no longer useless to you. This morning, the online restaurant reservation service launched their [...]

Hexagon.cc: Now it’s BitTorrent’s turn to go ‘social’

Social this, social that. Looks like everything is being socialized these days—but not the American health care system, zing!—so it only makes sense for someone to try to socialize BitTorrent. It doesn't hurt when that “someone” is the people behind IsoHunt, who just launched Hexagon.cc, a message board/social network hybrid built around sharing content.

Apple rejects BitTorrent monitoring App, claims it’ll be used to infringe copyright

It's not even a story any more that Apple loves to reject Apps from the App Store. Today's entry in the Big Book of App Rejections is µMonitor, an App that monitors µTorrent that you have running on your PC. Apple rejected it because “this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights.”

App Store Exposed: Notes Of Interest From Apple’s Statement To The FCC

Now that all of the letters to the FCC have been filed by Apple, AT&T and Google, we're more carefully reading them over for interesting details. The Apple letter would seem to have the most interesting information, as it controls the App Store, and has given some new information about it. Here are some interesting tidbits. On general app rejections:
We created an approval process that reviews every application submitted to Apple for the App Store in order to protect consumer privacy, safeguard children from inappropriate content, and avoid applications that degrade the core experience of the iPhone. Some types of content such as pornography are rejected outright from the App Store, while others such as graphic combat scenes in action games may be approved but with an appropriate age rating. Most rejections are based on bugs found in the applications. When there is an issue, we try to provide the developer with helpful feedback so they can modify the application in order for us to approve it.
