EPI Life phone sports ECG function, can let doctors know if you’re not gonna make it
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsIt seems like the promise of connected, doctor-monitored mobile and at-home health services has been a little slow on the uptake, but here's a promising step: a new phone from Singaporean firm Ephone that can run an ECG on you and send off the results for analysis. In this case, though, it seems like your doctor can't provide you with this thing so he or she can keep an eye on your ticker -- instead, you've got to sign up for a subscription with Ephone that runs between about $71 and $215 a month (depending on the monthly ECG upload cap), at which point the company's own team of doctors can check out your results and make recommendations or dispatch emergency services if need be. The so-called EPI Life itself runs about $350 in some Asian markets, which can also be used to track glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure (presumably with external sensors) and there's a fancier model coming later in the year. Oh, and if you don't live in Asia, hang tight -- Ephone is looking to license the tech to other companies.EPI Life phone sports ECG function, can let doctors know if you're not gonna make it originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 23:27:00 EST. Terror in Taipei: Computex taxi drivers watch live TV, video chat while cruising
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsIt's a Christmas miracle that Joanna and I survived the week in Taipei. Not because our brains nearly exploded from the wealth of non-functioning Windows 7 tablets we saw, but because most of our cab drivers found themselves -- um, preoccupied -- while on the job. Over here, deep within a WiMAX hotspot, it's not uncommon to see cabbies video chatting and watching live local TV over-the-air while driving, and since you'd never believe me sans pics, I've got a handful of those as proof. Call it culture shock, or call it reckless -- we're calling it "America needs to get with the program and catch up to Asia."Terror in Taipei: Computex taxi drivers watch live TV, video chat while cruising originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Jun 2010 09:58:00 EST. iPad accessories for fun and profit
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsIf Computex proves anything, it’s that what Asia makes the rest of the world takes… or at least thinks about taking before deciding to buy something else. Take this iPad stand, for example. At first blush it looks great: it turns your iPad into an iMac. Then you look at it again and you’re like “Nahhh…” The [...] -

Posted on May 26, 2010 | No Comments
Do you like your screens crisp, but your phones a little less wavey? Do you like teh Gigahertzes, but are fearful of dragons?
Well, I'm happy that you're so sure of yourself, but I'm even happier that the Galaxy S ticks all of your boxes AND will be released sometime in June!
But calm down a sec, mmmkay? There is something more I need to tell you. First of all, the June release is for Asia only at this point.

Samsung Galaxy S will hit Asia in June, get Froyo later
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung has just let the cat out of the bag regarding its top of the line Galaxy S, which is set to make its global debut in Asian markets this June. Unsubsidized, this 4-inch beastie will cost you S$1,098 (or around $775), which might be a little on the steep side, but then this is one of only a pair of Super AMOLED handsets on the market and Samsung makes the other one. And in case you want an alternative closer to home, Amazon's German portal is now listing the Galaxy S for pre-order at €649, which works out to about the same price. The best news from today, however, is probably Samsung's official confirmation that the phone will be getting an Android 2.2 upgrade at some point in its future. No specifics are given as yet, but we'll take our Froyo whenever and wherever we can get it.

The Inkia inPad 701 and inPad 702 breaks onto the scene
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No Comments>
Inkia isn't a new player in the tablet game and so the inPad 701 and inPad 702 might be solid contenders. Details are a bit light but we know that both run Android on a 7-inch screen with the 702 model getting a 3G module. It's probably safe to assume that the target market is Asia but retails such as Dynamism has a long history of bringing similar products to the states. That is of course if they are worth our time and not garbage.

The US’s first offshore wind farm approved, to be located off the coast of Cape Cod
Posted on April 28, 2010 | No Comments
America might finally catch up to Europe and Asia with offshore wind farms. The US federal government finally green lighted a project today that will bring a 24 square mile 130-turbine farm to the waters 5 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Nantuket Sound. It's said to generate 75% of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantuket's power requirement. Great, right?
Well even though it's been approved by state and federal government, okay'd by both Greenpeace and the Sierra Club, the project is still controversial and bound to be tied up in the courts for years.

Sony’s gaming headset rocks the modern design
Posted on March 2, 2010 | No Comments
Sony just launched a new gaming headset line in Asia, and they look nice. I'm not entirely sure how comfortable they are based on the rendering, but they certainly look lighter than most headsets. Expect to see them in Asia this month, and hopefully Sony will bring them over to us sooner rather then later. No word on pricing at this time.

From 1978: Unbelievable Japanese “Star Wars” TV spot for “sea chicken”
Posted on February 2, 2010 | No Comments
Star Wars has always been popular in Japan, so seeing Luke Skywalker et al. in a Japanese TV commercial from the 1970s isn't a big deal in itself. But seeing the Star Wars franchise being used for promoting "sea chicken" (canned tuna) is kind of unusual.
Needless to say, the gaijin acting in the TV spot, which was first aired on Japanese TV in 1978, are just look-alikes. And apparently, "sea chicken" maker Hagoromo Foods has used the Star Wars setting without getting a license from Lucasarts. Different times back then, I guess.
TV spot after the jump.

Leakage: Six new cameras from Panasonic

Nothing official yet, but this looks like a pretty good leak. Panasonic loves to do this kind of thing, announcing several cameras at once to distract from the other manufacturers.
