    Samsung Galaxy S preview

Just because the US has gone gaming crazy these past couple of days doesn't mean the smartphone world has stopped turning. Samsung trotted out its Galaxy S handset last night in London, and we were naturally there to try and glean a better understanding of where this 4-inch Android 2.1 device fits in our wishlist hierarchy. It's quite the stat sheet stuffer, as we're sure you're aware, and it strikes an alluring figure for those looking to get on the true do-it-all smartphone bandwagon. Check out our latest impressions -- replete with video and a whole gallery dedicated to the Super AMOLED screen's performance in sunlight -- just past the break.

  • FCC offers ’simple’ ‘tips’ for avoiding pesky early termination fees

FCC offers ’simple’ ‘tips’ for avoiding pesky early termination fees

The government is just about the last place we'd look for helpful pointers on much of anything, much less when shopping for a new phone -- but that didn't stop the FCC's Consumer Task Force from whipping up a PDF of things you can to do prevent yourself from getting burned with a multi-hundred dollar early termination fee when buying the handset of your wildest dreams. There's nothing in here that isn't obvious to a seasoned phone buyer -- buy the phone at full price instead, ask about a trial period, look into proration, and so on -- but it goes without saying that these are the kinds of tidbits average consumers should know before setting foot in the store. Perhaps the more interesting thing about this effort on the FCC's part is that it indicates the feds haven't forgotten about the stink it made about rising ETFs not long ago -- and AT&T's move to hop on the bandwagon can't be helping to smooth things over in Washington. Anyhow, go get your learn on before some seedy carrier sales rep takes advantage of you, won't you?

iPhone 3G’s Android port is ready to download

Had enough Android excitement yet? Of course not. Following up on the Froyo release yesterday, we've got the no less vital news that the iPhone 3G port of Android is now ready to download and install. Having shown off Google's OS running on a 3G two weeks ago, author David Wang has clearly had to iron out a few kinks before serving up the necessary binaries, but here they are now, replete with a handy install guide he's penned over at PC World. Time to get yourself on the dual-booting bandwagon, no?

Did you download The Hurt Locker with BitTorrent? You may be facing a lawsuit soon!

Hope you didn't download The Hurt Locker with BitTorrent because it looks like the film's producers may be coming after you. They're looking at a multi-million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit that would target "tens of thousands" of users. Let's discuss this for a moment.

  • Clearwire sticking with WiMAX until at least 2012

Clearwire sticking with WiMAX until at least 2012

Clearwire always seems to have commitment issue. Despite going steady with WiMAX, the company keeps saying that they might eventually part ways for different pastures -- namely LTE, should WiMAX turn out to be a dead end (talk about relationship pressure). That's still ongoing, as CEO Bill Morrow recently explained to CNET that its contract with Intel has been amended so that "either party can terminate the technology agreement within 30 days" but later adding that it definitely wouldn't hop on the LTE bandwagon before 2012. He strikes down some false hope a question later: "we won't be upgrading to LTE, if we do that, for a long time." Granted, time is a relative construct, and two years may be a "long time" to Bill. Oh, why do you keep stringing 'em both along?

  • Q&A with Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation

Q&A with Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation

Today marks the start of the fourth annual Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, which is "an exclusive, invitation-only summit gathering core kernel developers, distribution maintainers, ISVs, end users, system vendors and other community organizations for plenary sessions and workgroup meetings to meet face-to-face to tackle and solve the most pressing issues facing Linux today." All the names you'd normally expect at a Linux event are going to be there -- IBM, Google, Hewlett Packard -- along with companies jumping on the MeeGo bandwagon -- Nokia, Intel, and more. The agenda lists some interesting topics, but the Summit itself raised a number of questions for me. I exchanged emails with Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, about the Summit, and the state of Linux in general.

  • What if…Apple only offered the 64GB/3G iPad and sold it for $499

What if…Apple only offered the 64GB/3G iPad and sold it for $499

Even though the iPad is still more than a month away from shipping, iSuppli conducted a preliminary itemized parts breakdown. The results aren't that surprising: Apple's making a boatload on these things. Suppli concluded that the $499 16GB/no 3G model only costs $229 to manufacturer with the $829 64GB/3G model costing only $117 more to make even though it carries a $329 premium. Nice, eh? These numbers can be broken down even further showing Apple's insane margins. The 3G module only costs $24.50, but Apple charges $129 more for the option. The NAND memory chips are really the only difference between all three options, but their real costs of $29 for 16GB, $59 for $32GB, and $119 for 64GB are nowhere near proportionate with the iPad's prices. All this data shows that Apple's abandoning its long-held K.I.S.S. strategy. So what if Apple got back on the keeping it simple bandwagon, only offered the high-end 64GB with 3G iPad and still sold it for $499? After all, the company would still be making at least $153 on each iPad sold. Would that turn around the iPad's outlook?

THQ CEO says Sony’s motion controller is actually named Arc, not Gem

Last time we heard, Sony’s motion controller was named Gem. That was according to EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, back in early December. But THQ’s head man said today in an investor call that it’s named Arc. Either way it still seems like a novelty Wii Remote controller knock-off to us. Pass. Rumor: Palm Pixi to go Pink?

As any long time MobileCrunch reader (hey, they exist!) ought to know, we've got a bit of a soft spot for pink phones. I'm not really too interested in carrying one (nothing against'em, it would just clash with my depressingly grey-hued wardrobe), but I like to keep a careful eye on them as they surge in popularity right around February 14th of each year. This time around, it looks like Palm might be hopping on the brightly-colored bandwagon.
