Motorola Droid X for Verizon official: July 15 for $200

There was little about the mighty Droid X that we hadn't already known -- but for what it's worth, Verizon and Motorola have teamed up today to expose everything we want to know about the next Android beast for Big Red. The 4.3-inch 854 x 480 handset features Android 2.1 with an all-new UI skin, a TI OMAP3640 processor galloping along at 1GHz, HDMI out, 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p video capture, and 8GB of onboard storage with expansion of up to 32GB (you get a 16GB card in the box) all stuffed in a package 9.9mm thick. Software wise, you've also got an integrated mobile hotspot with support for up to 5 devices connected over WiFi, DLNA support, and a legit multitouch keyboard with Swype built-in. It won't launch with Froyo, but that'll come later in the Summer as an upgrade along with Flash 10.1 support; the phone will be available on July 15 for $199.99 on contract after rebate, while the mobile hotspot service will run $20 extra a month with a 2GB cap and 5 cent per MB overage (data consumed on the phone itself is unlimited). Mirroring AT&T's move with the iPhone 4, all Verizon customers with upgrade dates in 2010 will be pulled up so they're eligible for the Droid X as soon as it's available. Follow the break for the full press release.

Droid 2 (or whatever it’s called) for Verizon breaks cover once again

Nothing new here, but at this point, Motorola's delicious duo of fresh Android phones for Verizon is leaking like... well, like a leaky faucet, we suppose. We've already got the full scoop on the keyboardless 4.3-inch Droid X -- a beast ready to take on sworn enemies from HTC like the EVO 4G and the Droid Incredible -- and we've seen plenty of details on the so-called Droid 2, too. The latter appears destined to replace the original Droid with a better keyboard layout and ever-so-gently refined ergonomics, but the latest leak from a Gizmodo tipster confirms that the cam's still 5 megapixels and it's currently running Android 2.1 atop Moto's new-look Blur (interestingly, the "Droid 2" name couldn't be confirmed). Apparently it's set for release in the "next few weeks," which would line up with rumors we've heard in the past of a launch windows somewhere between July and August -- so here's the real question: X or 2?

Apple CDMA iPhone 4 rumor given new wings

With the iPad unicorn now slain, what other beast can DigiTimes shackle its rumor mongering machine to? How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name), galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone. According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Pegatron (ASUStek's OEM manufacturing arm) will begin shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 from its Shanghai plants to Apple in Q4. Right, just in time for the holiday shopping season and perfectly alligned with Apple's annual September iPod event... you know, should Apple want to announce a deal with Verizon.

Premature leak of the day: Sony Ericsson 5-inch Android QWERTY phone

Hoowee! Look at this thing! What you're looking at here is a very early prototype of an upcoming Sony Ericsson 5-inch, full-QWERTY Android phone, and I gotta say, I kinda like it. However, 5 inches does make it a bit of a beast, moving the device squarely into too-big-to-be-a-phone-too-small-to-be-a-tablet territory... but look at that keyboard! It looks totally typeable!

Rumor: HTC Scorpion and all of its 1.5 Ghz, Android 2.2 goodness headed for Verizon?

Waaay back in February, we told you guys a tale of the HTC Scorpion, a mighty beast of a phone. Packing Android 2.2 and a 1.5 Ghz (!) processor, it could very well be the phone that everyone lusts over after their love for the current king, the EVO 4G, tapers. Take it as you will for now, but we just got a heads up from a generally well-informed source that the Scorpion is headed for.... [insert drumroll here]

  • Nokia N8 launching August 24, we hear; Amazon Germany taking €470 pre-orders

Nokia N8 launching August 24, we hear; Amazon Germany taking €470 pre-orders

We know, we know, you were banking on taking an N8 with you when you go summering in Cape Cod in July, but that might be a tall order because we're hearing from a trusted source that August 24 has been pegged as the big release date for Nokia's Symbian^3-powered beast. Pricing had already been announced at €370 ($465), but if you're interested in shedding an extra hundred for no apparent reason, Amazon Germany is now officially taking pre-orders for €469.50 ($590) in black -- just one of the five N8 shades Espoo will be pushing around the world. We think we'd recommend holding off on signing up for Amazon's enticing deal here, quite honestly -- especially considering the magnetic attraction we've got to that totally unapologetic orange version.

    [Thanks, Al]

  • Nokia E73 ‘Mode’ coming to T-Mobile next month?

Nokia E73 ‘Mode’ coming to T-Mobile next month?

This is totally out of the blue, but we were just hit up with a screen shot suggesting that T-Mobile USA will be launching a portrait QWERTY handset from Nokia on June 16 known as the E73 'Mode.' As is evidenced with the Nuron, T-Mobile has a tendency to assign trademarkable names to Nokias in its lineup that are known elsewhere in the world by their model number only, so we imagine that this phone will end up launching globally simply as the E73 as it takes over the E72's throne as Espoo's top productivity beast. More on this as we get it!

    [Thanks, Spenny]

Samsung already working on a Galaxy S Pro, complete with physical keyboard?

And it has a physical keyboard!” The rumors were in a bit too shaky of a state yesterday for us to cover [...]

Patriot shows off a monster 40 SSD-equipped computer

Say what you will, but $60k seems like a fair price for such a beast. Patroit recorded 155,000 IOPS/s on the computer. I ran the same test on my 5400 RPM notebook drive and got 401. Just think, you wouldn't have to wait for file transfers anymore, game levels would load nearly instantly, and Windows would boot faster than Chrome OS. (maybe) But then again it costs more than most a convertible Corvette and you might not like the type of ladies the computer attracts.

The Qisda QCM-330 is gorgeous, headed for Vodafone, and quite possibly Android-powered

When it comes to bar-shaped smartphones, it takes a good amount of effort to design something visually appealing. There’s really only so much you can do with a flat slab – and whatever can be done likely already has. With that said, there’s just something about this handset, the Qisda QCM-330. I’m not sure what that [...]
