Don’t forget Steam’s indie games are on sale too

Steam has been running a huge sale the last few days, (Bioshock for $5, oh yes) but a Reddit user is urging gamers to look past the six headline titles and to indie games. He’s right. There are a bunch of games I’ve never heard of for only a few dollars right now. If you’re like me [...]

  • Study: Nobody pays attention to video game scores (especially Metacritic ones)

Study: Nobody pays attention to video game scores (especially Metacritic ones)

I've never hidden my disdain for Metacritic (and GameRankings, but mostly Metacritic), the Web site that aggregates review scores for video games (and movies and so forth). It's an insane concept: let's round up all of these ostensibly separate opinions, throw 'em in a blender, and come up with a single, solitary number that conveys a game's entire worth. Balderdash, I say. Review scores aren't a standardized measurement—a 9.2 over at IGN doesn't mean a 9.2 at Edge, or an A over at 1UP.

  • Wherein tenuous links are made between BioShock and two new Ayn Rand biographies

Wherein tenuous links are made between BioShock and two new Ayn Rand biographies

Working under the assumption that many of you have played BioShock, I point you in the direction of this week's issue of The New Yorker, which has a quick review of two Ayn Rand biographies that may interest you. It's pretty funny because while the game's story, which is unreservedly great, is in part inspired by the Rand novel “Atlas Shrugged,” the New Yorker review doesn't miss a beat in calling the author, well, a hack.

    Bioshock 2 video preview

I've been told that I need to play the original Bioshock. I missed out on it when it first came out, but picked it up on Steam a while back and just never played it. I've been told it's a great game, but I haven't had the time to check it out yet. Guess I should get to it, since the hands-on videos are already coming out for the sequel.

  • Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

It hasn't been the best couple of months for Nintendo. Profits were down for the six months leading up to September, which the company blames on the strong yen and the Wii's price cut. Net sales, too, were down, some 34.5 percent. Fair enough, and those reasons are likely to explain Nintendo's situation, but is there something else going on? I know Pat Buchanan, the older gentlemen that he is, always uses the phrase “the chickens have come home to roost,” and I think it's applicable here. Perhaps Nintendo's strategy of selling the Wii to the “casual” crowd (housewives and the like, to simplify this) has finally run out of gas?

BioShock movie drops Pirates of the Caribbean director

Any hope you had of the BioShock movie not being a total piece of garbage can now safely be thrown out the window, onto a pile of pointy things that hurt a lot. The movie has a new director in the form of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, of 28 Weeks Later fame. He replaces Gore Verbinski, the guy who directed the fun-for-the-first-time Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
