iOS 4 golden masters now on BitTorrent (illegally, of course)

Not surprising: iOS 4 and iTunes 9.2 (which is needed to install iOS 4) golden masters have hit the Web. I see them on at least one popular BitTorrent. Your phone’s UUID has to be registered with Apple’s developer program otherwise you’re just wasting your time. Best plan of action? Just wait the few days [...]

The mania surrounding "Lost" continues. It has emerged that the series finale now holds the record of being the most downloaded TV show in the history of TV. The final two episodes, within 20 hours of appearing online, were downloaded some 900,000 times. Quite a bit, yes.

Did you download The Hurt Locker with BitTorrent? You may be facing a lawsuit soon!

Hope you didn't download The Hurt Locker with BitTorrent because it looks like the film's producers may be coming after you. They're looking at a multi-million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit that would target "tens of thousands" of users. Let's discuss this for a moment.

Justice? 80,000 Americans facing copyright-related lawsuits

We haven't really progressed beyond the year 2004, have we? With respect to copyright news, I mean. The latest: the "US Copyright Group" has filed suit against 20,000 BitTorrent users, with a cool 30,000 lawsuits now pending. If you total all the various different "Hollywood" (you know what I mean) lawsuits, that means that 80,000 Americans now face some sort of traffic-lawsuit.

    Movie screener season is here~!

The Golden Globe nominees were announced yesterday, and I'm going to go with Paul O and Ron's (from Ron and Fez… seriously, I have XM on all day long) conclusion that this year has been a fairly weak one. There were a few good films (I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds, and I want to see Up in the Air and The Informant and A Serious Man) but does anything really seem like an Oscar lock? I think not. Thank God for leaked screeners!

Take-down notices going after Microsoft Cofee

You'll recall that CrunchGear broke the news regarding the leak of Microsoft Cofee, a suite of applications used by law enforcement officials for their own devices. The leak came from a popular BitTorrent site, and then spread to The Pirate Bay and all over the Internet. Needless to say, it's “out there.” So good luck to Microsoft in trying to stop its spread.

How to use RSS to automatically download anything from Usenet

It’s the tree of life, and for no particular reason, either. As a corollary to Biggs’ “cable companies are doomed” article from earlier today, I thought I’d demonstrate how easy it is to accomplish what he was threatening. That is, live a happy and successful life without having to pay $100+ a month to Comcast, Time [...]

  • Dear Hollywood: Wanna stop BitTorrent piracy of your TV shows? Make them available overseas in a timely manner!

Dear Hollywood: Wanna stop BitTorrent piracy of your TV shows? Make them available overseas in a timely manner!

What's wrong with sites like Hulu? Well nothing, per se, except for the fact that they can't be used anywhere outside of the Unites States. As if other countries don't want to watch... um, really great shows like “Extreme Makeover” and “The [American] Office”! Perhaps that's why, then, BitTorrent site EZTV has seen traffic double, mainly from non-American IPs, in the past year? For whatever reason, people want to watch these shows, but since there's no legal outlet to do so, well, it's not exactly hard to configure uTorrent or Transmission, now is it?

  • How should Net Neutrality affect the mobile Internet?

How should Net Neutrality affect the mobile Internet?

The Big Deal yesterday was the FCC's announcement of two additional proposals to its enforcement of Net Neutrality: non-discrimination (ISPs can't play favorites when it comes to network traffic), and transparent management (ISPs should be upfront with their network management practices, like blocking BitTorrent during peak hours). That's all well and good—I don't think you'll find anyone across the Crunch Network who doesn't support Net Neutrality—but this is thought to apply to “traditional” ISPs: Comcast, Time Warner, etc. The question becomes, then, how should Net Neutrality affect the wireless Internet? Should AT&T be subjected to the same regulations that Time Warner is vis-à-vis the iPhone? What about Sprint and the Palm Pre (and Pixi!)?

  • I’m sorry, but we have to ban music. That’s just the way it is.

I’m sorry, but we have to ban music. That’s just the way it is.

It has come to my attention that the music industry now wants royalties for those 30-second clips of music you hear in iTunes. That, I think you'll agree, is bullshit. Seeing as though we're a solution-oriented blog here at CrunchGear, I want to offer a completely fool-proof way to save the music industry and put an end to the years and years of nonsense we've seen since Napster first was first released: let's ban music. That's right, let's pass a law that says “the creation or performance of music, in any form, is hereby banned. Any violation of this law will be punishable by death.” Problem solved, let's all play Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Hexagon.cc: Now it’s BitTorrent’s turn to go ‘social’

Social this, social that. Looks like everything is being socialized these days—but not the American health care system, zing!—so it only makes sense for someone to try to socialize BitTorrent. It doesn't hurt when that “someone” is the people behind IsoHunt, who just launched Hexagon.cc, a message board/social network hybrid built around sharing content.

Now it’s Mininova’s turn: Ordered to remove all infringing content, or else!

Scratch one Web site off that “alternative to The Pirate Bay” list. Mininova has been ordered by a Dutch court to remove all links to copyrighted items from its servers, or face fines to the tune of €5 million. You get the feeling that the era of BitTorrent as we know it is about to end, don't you?

MPAA will hound isoHunt founder till the End of Days

You wouldn't want to be isoHunt founder Gary Fung these days. He's currently facing an MPAA lawsuit that could well result in fines in the millions of dollars. (TorrentSpy was ordered to cough up $100 million last year.) And even if Mr. Fung doesn't have that kind of money, and he doesn't, the MPAA is prepared to pursue any judgment “for the rest of his life.” The MPAA sounds like it means business.

The Mailbox: Myka Set-Top Box Arrives for Testing

After an entire week of claiming to have visited my house at 5AM to deliver a package, the DHL man finally dropped off the Myka today. Not that I actually saw him: the guy scuttled off  into the heat haze of the street like a gecko, leaving the package, alone, in the middle of the [...]
