Innpu’s ‘wired phone’ has retractable headphones, intractable sense of self-worth
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsThis is news to us, but apparently there have been "few noteworthy advancements" in smartphone hardware since the iPhone and BlackBerry came out. Out to fix this stale, plateaued industry is Innpu, with its revolutionarily new "wired phone" (it's bad news when even the manufacturer puts the product name in quotation marks, right?). Setting the new high watermark in cellphone engineering, it comes with built-in headphones and mic, which retract automatically when you complete your call. And hey, we've seen earphones like that selling by themselves for $2, maybe $4 a pop -- luxurious stuff. Lest you think Innpu unambitious, the company's also promising to bring this life-saving functionality to the iPad and netbooks, while noting that its sophisticated technology "can hardly be copied." Probably because no one will ever care to try.

Research In Motion enters Chinese retail channel with BlackBerry 8910 Curve
Posted on June 19, 2010 | No CommentsRemember the mysterious BlackBerry 8910 Curve that showed up briefly back in January? Well, forget that -- this is the real 8910 here. RIM was at China yesterday to launch this familiar-looking device -- OK, it's actually just a 8900 sans WiFi, but it's also the first BlackBerry that'll be sold through Chinese retail channels -- carried by Digital China -- instead of just enterprise contracts. Nothing fresh from the rest of the specs: 2.4-inch 480 x 360 screen, quadband GPRS, 512MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and microSD expansion of up to 32GB. FaceCash mobile payment apps are like real money, only with your face on it instead of someone smart
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsThinkLink's FaceCash mobile payment system has debuted several apps (for BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android devices) which allow you to pay for things merely by scanning your phone -- and showing off the attached photo to confirm it is, in fact, your own money that you're spending. You sign up, link your FaceCash account to your personal checking and savings account, and you're good to go with participating merchants. The apps can also store credit card numbers and banking information (perfect for when you lose your phone during a night of heavy partying), making it easier to leave your wallet or purse behind... or so they say. Sadly, FaceCash currently only has merchants in California, and really, who wants to live there?

Adobe expects Flash on 250 million smartphones by end of 2012
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsWhile in the midst of fixing a unicorn-sized hole in the security of its desktop software, Adobe has been talking about its future in the mobile space. According to its rose-tinted forecasts, Flash Player will be featured in a quarter billion handsets by the end of 2012, including 53 percent of all smarphones shipped that year. Those are pretty strident words for a company that has yet to ship Flash Player 10.1 in even one new handset, but we're reminded that Android 2.2's leading position on the issue will be swiftly followed by BlackBerry OS, Symbian, webOS, and Windows Phone 7 supporting the full fat Flash experience. Whether all that momentum will be enough to produce an install base of 250 million, we don't know. What we do know, however, is that people want the blasted thing and Adobe had better start doing a bit more work on its mobile player and a little less talking about it -- that's what we're here for.

Motorola and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion have just jointly announced that they have entered into a settlement and licensing agreement that ends all outstanding worldwide litigation between the two companies.
The financial terms of the agreement include an up-front payment and ongoing royalties to Motorola. Further terms and conditions of the agreement will remain confidential.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 gets some glamour shots, OS 6 gets a 16 minute video walkthrough
Posted on June 5, 2010 | No CommentsThe verdict is still out on OS 6, but there's hardly any doubting the assured design and form factor that RIM has gone with for the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider. Our latest look at the device comes courtesy of BlackBerry Times in China, who has what appears to be an early version of the device. They expect the smooth plastic back to be replaced by the leather look RIM favors on its higher end devices, but otherwise the unit looks to be pretty solid and far along. The Google-translated Chinese seems to confirm again that the screen is not SurePress. Not a lot of landmark news to be gleaned here, but we're mostly stoked about these delicious bokeh-filled shots of device -- it's really looking good, and the comparison shot with other recent BlackBerrys (check after the break) is rather helpful for sizing this thing up.

Tips and tricks to extending the HTC EVO 4G and Incredible’s battery life (and what this says about Android)
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsMG and I came at our EVO 4G reviews from different backgrounds. Even though I'm married to a BlackBerry with a little Droid action on the side and he's a self-proclaimed iPhone fanboy, we both came to the same conclusion: the battery life on the EVO 4G sucks. Sorry, it does. But that's the state of high-powered Android phones at the moment. Both the EVO 4G and Incredible are in the same boat. The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU makes the phones a joy to use, but drains the battery in no time. It's not entirely the snappy dragon's fault either. Android users have been putting up with these type of shenanigans since the G1 debuted in late 2008. It's really sad that the battery life issue still exists and users have to work around it just to use the latest and greatest hardware. I read every single comment on my EVO 4G review with the hope that I was wrong about the phone's battery issue and was simply doing something wrong. But none of the suggestions significantly improved my EVO 4G's battery life. However, by doing a bunch of little things, I extended it's idle life from about 12 hours to 14:30 -- this is the phone's battery life with everything turned off besides 3G and it just sits. All the tweaks are easy to do, but you're going to have to forgo some of the more fun things about Android. It's a shame, really, that a user has to give up fun widgets, advance wireless connections, and auto setting just to squeeze a few more hours from their phone.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 hits Verizon tomorrow for $150 after contract

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 will be available for online ordering from Verizon beginning June 3rd (that's tomorrow) and in Verizon stores starting on June 10th. This is the provider's first global handset with GlobalAccess Connect tethering, and in keeping with the "global" theme transnational road warriors can look forward to worldwide VZ Navigator (including Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and of course ol' Blighty). Expect to pay $150 after $100 rebate and a two-year contract. PR after the break.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 sales kicking off on Verizon this week?
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsWe can't vouch for the authenticity here, but a shot over Berry Reporter alleges that Big Red will finally start taking orders for the Bold 9650 via direct fulfillment this week -- on June 3, to be exact. Considering Verizon's time-honored tradition of being all over RIM's latest CDMA releases on the double (probably because their development is funded largely by Verizon's orders), we're actually kind of surprised it's not on shelves already; it's possible that Sprint negotiated a short, sweet exclusivity period for itself just to get a little bit of a head start, we suppose. Anyhow, if you don't want to mail-order this thing, the shot goes on to say that you'll be able to check it out and buy it in stores on the 10th of the month, so hold tight.

White BlackBerry Bold 9700 now shipping at T-Mobile for $100

As promised, T-Mobile has now taken the white version of its BlackBerry Bold 9700 to retail. Along with the already-available black version, the 9700 goes out the door for $99.99 on contract after rebate, merely half of what the carrier was asking for the phone when it launched late last year -- and a price that makes the much lower-end Curve 8520 a less compelling buy, if we do say so ourselves. AT&T: 40 percent of iPhone sales are enterprise, Android ‘built with a very specific focus to consumers’
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsIt isn't just Verizon's Lowell McAdam with fascinating commentary at this Barclays Capital tech conference going down in New York this week. Ron Spears, who leads up AT&T's Business Solutions division, had some notable things to say about enterprise mobility -- specifically, the iPhone's role in taking businesses to the road, a magic trick typically associated almost exclusively with BlackBerry over the past ten years. Basically, Spears says that he's seeing extraordinary uptake on the business side with the iPhone since 2008 and the introduction of the platform's first enterprise-focused features; in fact, he claims that "four out of every 10 sales" are to enterprise users these days and that it has all but caught up to BlackBerry for the kind of modern, tight, full-featured security that your average IT department needs. On a related note, Spears says that he hasn't "seen the Android platform yet in the enterprise space," but that he figures it'll evolve over time to become "hard to ignore" to the enterprise segment. Of course, considering that AT&T has virtually no presence in the Android market at the moment, we're not surprised that he'd take a lukewarm tack -- so here's hoping that changes fast.
