  • The sad tale of Nokia’s sinking market cap, where I come over all nostalgic

The sad tale of Nokia’s sinking market cap, where I come over all nostalgic

Bloomberg today pumped out a chart that shows the erosion of Nokia's market cap over the last 10 years. Moreso, it also shows how Apple has seemingly switched places with the Finnish phone maker. 10 years ago (back when screens were greyscale, ringtones were beepy, batteries lasted over a week, and I rocked a Nokia 8210), Nokia's market cap was somewhere around a staggering $245 billion, which is -- strangely enough -- where Apple sits now.

Acer has an e-reader, app store, and Chrome OS netbook prepped for ‘10, working on a tablet

Acer has big plans for 2010. Sometime within the coming months the world's second largest computer maker will launch a 6-inch monochrome ebook reader, cross-platform application store and a Chrome OS netbook -- along with probably a crapton and a half of computers under its Acer, Gateway, and EMachines brands. And yes, the company is working on a tablet computer says the president of Acer's IT Products division. Tablet!

    AT&T drops Tiger Woods sponsorship

Gotta hand it to Bloomberg for this riveting one-sentence article written by two people. “AT&T Inc. is ending its sponsorship agreement with golfer Tiger Woods, company spokesman Michael Coe said in an e-mailed statement.” I don’t recall seeing Woods in any TV or print commercials for AT&T but he definitely had a few big, fat AT&T logos on his golf bag. The company still has Luke Wilson and the iPhone, so sleep easy, friends.

Rumor: Palm looking to cash in, Nokia might strike?

Another day, another merger rumor. The once-mighty handset developer, Palm, Inc., announced an increase of its public offering of common stock to 20,000,000 shares, @ $16.25/share. This news has spurred rumors of a possible bid on Palm by the Finnish mobile powerhouse, Nokia. James Faucette, an industry analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, thinks the idea of [...]

TomTom and Garmin say standalone GPS devices ain’t licked yet

Standalone GPS devices are a dying breed. Anyone with a half-way decent smartphone can get from point A to point B with a few taps of an onscreen keyboard and it's abundantly clear that standalone devices will end up being the the province of old folks. That said, TomTom and Garmin are seeing roses and puppy dogs.

Probably Not The Palm Pre Chart Roger McNamee Wants To See

You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,Elevation Partners (which owns a huge portion of Palm) co-founder Roger McNamee told Bloomberg in March. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.” A week from tomorrow is the big day for McNamee's prediction. How's it looking? Not so hot. Okay, awful. Yes, it's still early in the Palm Pre's life. And yes, there is plenty of room in the rapidly expanding mobile universe for more than one device. But it was McNamee who specifically threw down this gauntlet against the iPhone. And that makes charts like the one below, that much more amusing.

Rumor: Nokia orders its first batch of netbooks

Way back when 2009 was still somewhat fresh, Nokia’s CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo dropped the news that the world’s favorite Finnish handset maker was getting into the laptop biz. With a bit of algebra, logic, and other voodoo, we figured that what he actually meant was netbooks. Some commenters called us crazy, citing a weak economy [...]
