The sad tale of Nokia’s sinking market cap, where I come over all nostalgic
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
Bloomberg today pumped out a chart that shows the erosion of Nokia's market cap over the last 10 years. Moreso, it also shows how Apple has seemingly switched places with the Finnish phone maker.
10 years ago (back when screens were greyscale, ringtones were beepy, batteries lasted over a week, and I rocked a Nokia 8210), Nokia's market cap was somewhere around a staggering $245 billion, which is -- strangely enough -- where Apple sits now.

Palm is up for sale, says Bloomberg
Posted on April 11, 2010 | No CommentsWe’ve been reporting for about a week now on a couple of rumors indicating that various companies are circling around Palm with possible intent to buy, and it looks like it all might be coming to a head. Bloomberg is reporting that Palm has officially put it self up for sale, with their sources confirming the [...] -
Acer has an e-reader, app store, and Chrome OS netbook prepped for ‘10, working on a tablet
Posted on January 25, 2010 | No Comments
Acer has big plans for 2010. Sometime within the coming months the world's second largest computer maker will launch a 6-inch monochrome ebook reader, cross-platform application store and a Chrome OS netbook -- along with probably a crapton and a half of computers under its Acer, Gateway, and EMachines brands. And yes, the company is working on a tablet computer says the president of Acer's IT Products division. Tablet!

AT&T drops Tiger Woods sponsorship
Posted on December 31, 2009 | No Comments
Gotta hand it to Bloomberg for this riveting one-sentence article written by two people.
“AT&T Inc. is ending its sponsorship agreement with golfer Tiger Woods, company spokesman Michael Coe said in an e-mailed statement.”
I don’t recall seeing Woods in any TV or print commercials for AT&T but he definitely had a few big, fat AT&T logos on his golf bag. The company still has Luke Wilson and the iPhone, so sleep easy, friends.

Rumor: Palm looking to cash in, Nokia might strike?
Posted on September 23, 2009 | No CommentsAnother day, another merger rumor. The once-mighty handset developer, Palm, Inc., announced an increase of its public offering of common stock to 20,000,000 shares, @ $16.25/share. This news has spurred rumors of a possible bid on Palm by the Finnish mobile powerhouse, Nokia. James Faucette, an industry analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, thinks the idea of [...] -
Probably Not The Palm Pre Chart Roger McNamee Wants To See
Posted on July 21, 2009 | No Comments
“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” Elevation Partners (which owns a huge portion of Palm) co-founder Roger McNamee told Bloomberg in March. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”
A week from tomorrow is the big day for McNamee's prediction. How's it looking? Not so hot. Okay, awful.
Yes, it's still early in the Palm Pre's life. And yes, there is plenty of room in the rapidly expanding mobile universe for more than one device. But it was McNamee who specifically threw down this gauntlet against the iPhone. And that makes charts like the one below, that much more amusing.

Headline: Dell unlikely to buy Acer, says Micheal Dell
Posted on July 16, 2009 | No CommentsDell is on the market for some profitable companies but Acer isn’t one of their targets. In case you didn’t hear, Acer is almost ready to take away the #2 PC maker spot from Dell, but that doesn’t concern Mr. College-Dropout-Dell. Bloomberg, Acer “might have a similar unit volume to Dell, but their gross margin dollars are [...] -
Rumor: Nokia orders its first batch of netbooks
Posted on June 24, 2009 | No CommentsWay back when 2009 was still somewhat fresh, Nokia’s CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo dropped the news that the world’s favorite Finnish handset maker was getting into the laptop biz. With a bit of algebra, logic, and other voodoo, we figured that what he actually meant was netbooks. Some commenters called us crazy, citing a weak economy [...] -
TiVo and Time Warner apparently discussing DVR deal
Posted on June 22, 2009 | No Comments
Looks like Time Warner cable subscribers may someday get the option of the TiVo interface on their DVR boxes. According to Bloomberg, "TiVo is in talks to provide service through Time Warner Cable Inc." although nothing specific has really been revealed yet.

Standalone GPS devices are a dying breed. Anyone with a half-way decent smartphone can get from point A to point B with a few taps of an onscreen keyboard and it's abundantly clear that standalone devices will end up being the the province of old folks. That said, TomTom and Garmin are seeing roses and puppy dogs.
Looks like Intel is about to break into the mobile phone arena in a big way. According to Bloomberg, Intel and Nokia have struck a deal to include Intel CPUs in future Nokia handsets.
