Google claims Froyo has the world’s fastest mobile browser

You heard it here first, folks. Google has just come out with the strident claim that the web browser that comes as part of Android 2.2, aka Froyo, is the world's fastest for mobile devices. Google's implemented the V8 JavaScript engine that's already made an appearance in its desktop Chrome browser, and the result has been somewhere in the vicinity of two to three times better JS performance relative to previous Android versions. We'll give this geek cabal bonus points for the double equals sign up top and look forward to putting their bold assertion to the test in the near future.

It's all going on live right now, so make sure to go hit our I/O liveblog!

  • Too many discounts: Apple Japan bullies online retailers

Too many discounts: Apple Japan bullies online retailers

Japan loves Apple, there's no doubt about it. The brand is one of the most popular tech brands in the country. iPods, Macs and even the iPhone are selling like hot cakes. But apparently, big A, or at least its Japanese subsidiary, is getting a bit arrogant in the process. According to The Nikkei ("Japan's Wall Street Journal"), Apple Japan today ordered a number of major online retailers to stop offering all of their products online.

Nostalgia week continues with Apple ][, Pascal, and old-fashioned newsletters!

Hot on the heels of our celebration of the BBS, here's a pair of retro stories to ease your transition into the weekend. First up is "Pascal Spoken Here", by Ian Bogost about the subtle shift over the years in how we view computers. Back in 1977 the advertising clearly identified the connection between using, exploring, and learning a computer in ways that you simply don't see any more. Next up is a blast from the past on Slashdot with a wonderful scan of a computing newsletter from the 1980s.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLVII: these Adidas don’t go on your feet

Nothing says "I occasionally don a $200 jogging suit and plod through prominent areas of Central Park where my Greco-Roman form has the best chance of being noticed by onlookers" like carrying an Adidas-branded phone in your pocket. Bonus points for a metal-look "Sports" badge glued to the inside of the hinge. But ouch... minus 15 points for it being an unlicensed product, my friend -- who do you think you're fooling with this thing? Actually, whether it be the streets of Shenzhen or New York City, we don't think the average individual would suspect that this was a ripoff from the outside -- it's actually pretty convincing and tasteful -- but the multicolored lights on the keypad might give it away when you flip it open. Your years of athletic achievements, poof! Gone just like that in a cloud of illegal branding.

The JVC XS-SR3 iPod speaker dock plays audio via a series of tubes

JVC is still at the iPod speaker dock game but at least its latest offering bucks the norm and is actually different. Bonus points for that. The XS-SR3 features tubular speakers that are supposed to help simulate surround sound. The dock also holds the iDevice either vertically or horizontally, just like the B&W Zeppelin Mini [...]

Fake, but nice try. The T in Touch is the wrong case and there is no way the dock would look like that. Bonus points for the product name though. [TouchUserGuide via MacDailyNews]

Author of Ripped, Greg Kot, says the music industry only has itself to blame for piracy

Son of a gun-diddily-un. Just as I'm about to leave the house to fix my uncle's broken computer—doesn't it suck being “the computer guy” in the family?—I come across this great interview. It's from The Sound of Young America, a public radio program based in L.A., and is with the music critic of the Chicago Tribune, Greg Kot. It's basically about the state of music in America today, and how the RIAA screwed itself over the past several years. Good stuff. So good, in fact, that I just bought the guy's book, Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music, from that Barnes and Noble e-book store.

Budget-friendly HTC Click steals more camera time

Can’t get enough of the wallet-friendly HTC Click? We hear you. We still don’t have any verified details about this guy, but we do have [...]

    Pump-Rechargeable Air-Horn Great for Tourist-Scaring

The $30 Ecoblaster is a rechargeable Air Horn. It is also something I need, and I need right now. But first, let me explain why. One of the banes of living in a city which attracts as many tourists into such a compact center as sunny Barcelona, Spain, is that the place is often crawling with [...]

Motorola prepping to launch Android handsets for T-Mobile and Verizon by year’s end

At this point, it’s by absolutely no means a secret that Motorola is cracking away at some Android phones. Hell, Android is kind of a big deal for them now.
