Is the Android Market down for you? (update: it’s back)

As I began the process of tearing into our brand new Droid X review unit, I ran through the nearly endless mental laundry list of all my favorite Android apps. “I’m totally going to install all of these“, I thought. Only one problem: The Android Market wasn’t showing any apps. None. No Yammers, no Yelps, [...]

  • Meganet’s Dominator I snoops on four GSM convos at once, fits in your overnight bag

Meganet’s Dominator I snoops on four GSM convos at once, fits in your overnight bag

"Dominator I" sounds more like a monster truck than a collection of small boxes that collectively erase 20 years of relatively secure wireless phone service, doesn't it? Alas, what you're looking at here is a convenient, plug-and-play solution for exploiting the hard work the world's hacking community has put into cracking the A5/1 encryption used on GSM networks in Europe and the US over the past few years. The system consists of two nondescript white boxes, two directional antennas that you'll point in the direction of your victim, and a laptop that you can use to get a glimpse at all of the phones currently connected to your nearest cell site and record up to four active calls simultaneously -- and if you're more of the text messaging type, Dominator I's got you covered there, too, with full access to SMS. The company claims that the system was "declassified only last week" and is completely undetectable both by the operator and the end user, putting it in this rare nexus of "awesome" and "completely terrifying." It can't do the 128-bit A5/3 used in UMTS, but now that it's been cracked in a somewhat practical way, we're sure the Dominator II can't be far behind. Follow the break for Meganet's video of the system in action.

Video: Medal of Honor trailer reveals upcoming beta

A new trailer just posted to the Medal of Honor Web site pretty much checks all the boxes on the Big Checklist of FPS Trailer requirements. Sad, dramatic music; military man talking to his wife on the phone in a reassuring manner "I love you, we're OK because we're trained for this sort of thing, don't forget to have the car inspected," etc.; flash, bang, explosion, fade to black. I really don't know how many of these games I can take. That's not saying it'll be a bad game—I played it, and it is, in fact, quite good&,dash;but I do believe I'm tiring of playing toy soldier.

  • “Universal Packaging System” concept misses the point

“Universal Packaging System” concept misses the point

In theory Patrick Sung's new design concept sounds good. A sheet of cardboard, perforated in such a way to make it easy to wrap around an item, all the time protecting it from damage during shipment. But that's where the good idea fails. Plus, I doubt the United Parcel Service will let him use their logo.

AT&T to begin 3G MicroCell rollout in mid-April, MicroCell unit to cost $150

The news out of CTIA just won’t stop. AT&T has just announced their roll out plans for their cell-tower-in-a-box, signal-boostin’ 3G MicroCell service, which they’ve had in testing since September. Not sure what the MicroCell is? Don’t sweat it – it’s a bit of a weird concept. If you’re in an area where signal is [...]

Why software costs so much: It’s the packaging!

Here’s a fairly egregious example of wasteful packaging sent by Quantum to a buddy of mine. The boxes they are unpacking contain Quantum’s licensing agreements, two single sheets of paper that were shipped in their own boxes, wrapped in bubble wrap, and contained in one main box also full of bubble wrap. Luckily they stopped shipping [...]

Series 3 TiVo boxes will NOT get the Premiere software

Sorry, TiVo owners. Your TiVo HD and HD XL boxes will not be getting the swanky new software TiVo announced today according to an official TiVo spokeswomen we just asked. It probably has something to do with the fact that the Premiere hardware is the same as the current generation and therefore current owners would [...]

Rumor: Upcoming TiVo improvements include UI revamp and full HD support

<A tipster writes in with knowledge of some of the improvements TiVo may be making to its devices. The most important: a move to full HD menus, improved search, and the phasing out of Series 2 hardware. Because the company stopped making improvements to the current software as of the middle of last year, our source believes that aside from minor add-ons like Blockbuster support the old UI and OS will be replaced by a fully HD version, available at first on Series 3 hardware. He describes the move as something akin to Microsoft's redesign of the Xbox Dashboard - a surface refresh that plays better with larger, HD TVs. This could also include new methods for adding apps and content to existing boxes.

Comcast acknowledges 2005 by slowly rolling out remote DVR scheduling

Do you have a Comcast DVR? I do. I also have a TiVo, which has had remote scheduling since 2005. I can almost schedule recordings remotely to my Comcast DVR. Not yet, but almost – it’s not available in Boston yet, apparently. If you have a Comcast DVR, check out www.comcast.net/mydvr/ to see if the service has been switched on in your area.

  • Verizon’s mobile broadband customers get bundled WiFi access

Verizon’s mobile broadband customers get bundled WiFi access

Verizon's playing catch-up this week in a game some of its rivals have been playing for ages now -- the WiFi business -- by bundling access to a fairly extensive network of hotspots in the US, Canada, and Mexico with its broadband data plans. It's a double-edged sword, though, because they're not stepping up to the plate with as much conviction as AT&T and T-Mobile have; first off, Verizon's limiting the service strictly to users of its modems and MiFi boxes while the other guys have succumbed to bundling it with smartphone data packages, and secondly, it appears hell-bent on forcing connections to go through the same crapware connection management app used with its data cards. Of course, you could argue that Verizon's larger 3G footprint gives 'em less impetus to offload users to WiFi, but by the same token, they're charging more for service -- so yeah, we're gonna predict they relent at some point just as AT&T ultimately did.

  • Nokia’s Illuvial Collection is pretty in pink

Nokia’s Illuvial Collection is pretty in pink

We're not sure why the color pink tends to spawn special editions with greater frequency than other colors, but for pink lovers, it works out pretty nicely because you end up getting all sorts of free crap bundled with your phone simply for buying your favorite shade. Take Nokia's new Illuvial Collection, for example, which has taken the 5530, 6303, and 6700, dressed them up in a very hot shade of pink, and stuffed 'em in boxes with custom leather cases and straps. The pinkfest doesn't stop there, though: the phones also include custom themes which are dominated by -- you guessed it -- pink. It looks like all three models are already available from the UK's mobiles.co.uk, and other markets throughout Europe should be getting hooked up with at least some of these in the coming weeks.
