Apple Store app arrives in Apple App Store

This is one of those things that makes you wonder why it hadn't been done already. Apple's just unleashed an Apple Store application for its iDevices designed to pretty much give you the online Apple Store experience -- but perhaps without the crazy on-again, off-again antics of this morning. All that's required is a device with iOS version 3 or above, and you'll be able to read reviews, locate local brick and mortar Stores, check out new and featured products, and -- importantly -- buy or pre-order the latest goodies Steve and co have bestowed upon these lands. Alas, we tried to do just that with the iPhone 4 and were met with the familiar "we'll be back soon" message. So the app might work, but Apple's store is still struggling.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

P.S. - The app looks to be US-only for now. Sorry world, Apple doesn't love you enough.

  • LG Ally up for preorder on Thursday, launching on May 20?

LG Ally up for preorder on Thursday, launching on May 20?

We should know a whole lot more about this situation at an Iron Man 2-themed LG event taking place later today, but BGR appears to have scored full details on LG's upcoming Android-equipped Ally for Verizon along with a couple key dates. Most importantly, it sounds like the landscape QWERTY slider will be available in "all channels" (read: telesales and brick-and-mortar stores) on May 20, preceded by an online pre-order this Thursday, May 13. It's got Eclair, a 3.2 megapixel cam, 4GB microSD card in-box, and a Qualcomm MSM7627 core -- the same midrange silicon that powers the Moto Devour. Against the Droid, this bad boy appears to slot just underneath in the range, but a little choice never hurt anyone, did it?

  • Circuit City brick and mortar stores might live again

Circuit City brick and mortar stores might live again

We all know the story: Circuit City Stores spiraled down from its high point in the late 90's to bankruptcy in 2008 and then liquidation in 2009. Systemax then bought the rights to the brand a few months later and quickly relaunched CircuitCity.com. Since then Systemax has been racking in the cash. So much cash in fact that Systemax is thinking about opening some Circuit City retail locations. Seriously.

Printed coupons are from New Jersey, online coupons are from New York

RetailMeNot.com, "a top consumer destination for coupons, discounts and promotional codes for merchandise, groceries, travel and services", shared some interesting statistics about consumer coupon use for the first month of 2010. New Jersey loves printing off coupons for use in brick-and-mortar stores, while New York prefers online coupon codes. Almost 15 million people visited RetailMeNot.com in January and saved over eight million dollars with online and printed coupons.

  • Thanko sells USB-powered “Hot Cat Gloves”

Thanko sells USB-powered “Hot Cat Gloves”

Back in August, I blogged about Thanko's Catgirl Earphones, which were shaped like cat ears. And today, the notorious Tokyo-based USB gadget maker started selling the so-called Hot Cat Gloves [JP]. A big day for the Cosplay crowd, especially those with a penchant for dressing up as a catgirl. These things may appear totally silly, but Thanko says that the Catgirl Earphones from the summer are still their No. 1 selling item. And the company has to make money to keep their three (!) brick-and-mortar stores in Tokyo going somehow.

  • Barnes & Noble Will Ship Around 60,000 Nooks This Year

Barnes & Noble Will Ship Around 60,000 Nooks This Year

A lot more people have ordered the Barnes & Noble Nook, first announced on October 20, than the company expected (despite getting panned by the officialreviewers). The company had Foxconn, their ODM, build far fewer of them than they should have. The original plan was to ship pre-orders by November 30 but that date was pushed back to December 7. It took a mere month for the entire order process to break down. Now a small number of pre-orders still haven’t arrived and most brick and mortar stores are sold out and even then they were only available in “higher volume” stores on December 7.

CrunchGear visits Thanko’s new USB flagship store in Akihabara (photo report)

USB-powered neckties, slippers, boob warmers, spy button cameras and tons of other ludicrous stuff: Thanko [JP], Japan's (and possibly the world's) most notorious maker of USB gadgets (most of which nobody really needs) never disappoints in the silliness department. The company closed their English online store just last month but continues to impress business-wise by opening a new flagship store right in the heart of Akihabara.

USB-powered gloves that keep your fingers warm (but why?)

My first reaction - when I saw today on Thanko's web site that the notoriously silly gadget maker from Tokyo is selling USB-powered gloves with built-in heaters [JP] - was: Who actually buys this kind of stuff? I mean Thanko is a real company, they have brick-and-mortar stores in Tokyo (two of them), they have employees etc. But they have been surviving for years now, even though they closed their English online store last month.

  • Windows 7 launches tomorrow. Are you going to bite?

Windows 7 launches tomorrow. Are you going to bite?

Windows 7 has been a long time coming. In some ways it's what Windows Vista was suppose to be back in 2006. It's fast, super stable, but also clean and sleek. I love it and switch from OS X because of Windows 7. It has restored my faith in Microsoft and it feels good to be back on a Windows system after a five year hiatus. I don't think I'm alone either. Reviews and previews of Windows 7 have been posted ever since the first public beta in January of 2009. Everyone seems to love it. I haven't seen or heard of any major bugs or flaws in the operating system. Microsoft nailed this one and should be proud. Tomorrow, October 22, is the official launch date of Windows 7. Preorders are already shipping out from online retailers and I wouldn't be surprised if the retail boxes are already on the shelves in some brick and mortar stores. In fact, TG Daily is reporting that Windows 7 has dethroned Harry Potter as Amazon's most successful preorder item of all time. It's clear that people want Windows 7.

  • An upcoming Target ad further supports the $199 Wii rumor

An upcoming Target ad further supports the $199 Wii rumor

What do we have here? A Target ad similar to the Toys R Us ad that says the Wii is getting a $50 price drop? Kotaku notes that this ad is suppose to circulate the week of September 27, which is the same time as the Toys R Us one. That's only a week and a half away and these brick and mortar stores likely already have the print ads sitting in a warehouse within easy reach of workers with camera phones. So let's just go ahead and call this real, eh? The Wii will soon be $199.
