Steve Jobs would be proud of this Ikea hack

I'm a sucker for clever desks and organization objects. Sometimes you don't need a massive Pottery Barn desk to email your parents pics of the kids. All you need is a place to sit and two little shelves from Ikea. (and some handyman skills)

Hands-on: 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Go Portable Drive

The Seagate FreeAgent Go is a 1TB, USB-powered hard drive that works. What more do you wanna know? I just got the 1TB FreeAgent Go Portable Drive from Seagate and I’m impressed. First off, it’s not that large. I mean, it’s sort-of bulky compared to Seagate’s smaller FreeAgent Go drives, but it’s manageable. The drive is [...]

  • Charge4All folding power strip

    Charge4All folding power strip

Ok road warriors, here's one for you. This is a little gadget I wish I'd had back in the day when I used to travel constantly for work. It's essentially a power strip, with adapters for multiple electronic devices, that zips up into a folding case. Seems quite obvious really, but a cool device none the less.

  • Review: mStand by Rain Design

    Review: mStand by Rain Design

Here at TechCrunch HQ, almost all of us have laptops, with some connecting their laptops to an external display. In my case, I use a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro connected to a 22" Gateway display. I have always gone by the theory that the more real estate space you have, the more productive you are. To keep both displays level, I've been trying out number laptop stands; anywhere from paper stacked on top of each other, to cardboard, but it seems like the best laptop stand for my Mac is the mStand from Rain Design. The mStand is designed for the MacBook and MacBook Pro, yet it works with all laptops. The mStand is made of a single solid piece of aluminum that matches MacBook Pro's silver anodized finish.

Sony develops cord-free power transfer system for home electronics

It's about time the big companies are killing the power cord. After Dell unveiled a notebook that can be charged wirelessly, it now seems to be Sony's turn to do away with those cables. • What’s holding me back from buying a Zune HD: the lack of 3rd-party support

What’s holding me back from buying a Zune HD: the lack of 3rd-party support

I haven't heard one major complaint about the Zune HD. Have you? Everyone seems to love it. My only iPod - the original iPod Mini - needs to be retired. I'm debating between the iPod touch and the Zune HD right now. The rebellious side in me wants to get the Microsoft Zune HD, which is kind of ironic if you think about it. However, the sensible side says that the iPod touch is the smart buy primarily because of the vast range of accessories available. Last Christmas I got my 14-year old sister-in-law a Zune 80 over an iPod touch or classic. She got the Zune because it offered more storage than the flash-based touch, but had a bigger screen than the iPod classic. Plus I've never had a Zune act funky or die on me, which is something I can't say that about an iPod. But then her birthday rolled around and we wanted to get her a speaker dock. Yeah, there are five speaker docks on the market and either they sound like poo, or they are made by Kicker and therefore out of our price range. She ended up getting a 2.1 computer speaker set with a y-cable. The issue I have is that I like all the extras you can do with these devices. I have an Onkyo iPod dock along with a Belkin RF car dock that I used to use all the time with the iPod Mini. I expect to have the same capabilities with my new purchase, but I don't think I can get that with the Zune HD.

iStubz iPod Cables: Short is the new long

iStubzTangled cords are absolutely the bane of my existence and yet I'm not quite anal enough to wrap twist ties and rubber bands around excess slack, so I enthusiastically applaud the shortest version possible of any proprietary cable (or any cable, for that matter). Applause, then, to the unfortunately-named iStubz iPod cable.

Eye-Fi and Apple, sittin’ in a tree, u-p-l-o-a-d-ing

apple-page_12vI took some photos yesterday afternoon, and didn't get around to trying to move them from the camera to my laptop until later in the evening. What should have been a simple process -- connect cable to camera, connect cable to laptop, import photos -- was stymied by my complete inability to find the cable I needed! It's not like I use a USB A-to-Mini-B cable every day. If only there were some way to wirelessly transfer photos from my camera into my computer. What's that, Eye-Fi? You say there is? Do tell!
