    iPhone 4G display put under a microscope, 960 x 640 a lock?

You've seen it in San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that's what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker's call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS -- making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair -- while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You'll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days' time.

Infinity Ward employees sue Activision for up to $500 million over withheld bonuses

Why haven't we applied the "gate" suffix to this Infinity Ward-Activision story yet? "Infinity Gate" has a certain ring to it, sorta sounds the name of a private military company. Anyway, how would you feel if you worked for a company and you made a product. It was a successfully product, like, you made the company $1 billion in just a few months. As per your contract, you're due a certain amount of money (royalties) for your troubles. The thing is, the company says, "Hey, you know that money we owe you? We won't give it to you until you finish another product. If you leave us you forfeit all claims to that money we owe you." Not cool, no, but that's what the Infinity Ward Employee Group now claims.

The G-Mate Gun Overlord – Real or Fake?

We're not entirely sure this thing exists in real life. The G-mate Gun Overlord just seems a bit too glorious. Even the video after the jump isn't enough proof. If it is real though, watch out, it could be awesome. Unless of course it's not and actually really lame.

Infinity Ward defending the cost of MW2’s DLC

To say we were a tad flabbergasted that Modern Warfare 2's 5 map pack DLC costs $15 is about right. We weren't exactly outraged. It's just a video game after all and really doesn't matter that much. But $15 is a bit much for five maps with two of the recycled from previous Call of Duty games. Infinity Ward's Creative Strategist Rob Bowling disagrees. He calls it an investment. Well, Creative Strategist is just code for Public Relations so he kind of has to say that.

  • Call of Duty cash cow will be milked completely dry

Call of Duty cash cow will be milked completely dry

Let's go back to the year 2005. That autumn, RedOctane released a game called Guitar Hero. It was pretty successful, so it spawned a sequel, Guitar Hero II. That came out on the fall of 2006. One year later, Rock Band first popped up. Then, in the span of around two years, video game publishers lost their minds, and published approximaely 800 music rhythm games. Now you have a situation where not even The Beatles can make Rock Band big again. The lesson: don't saturate the market with same-y games too suddenly. With that in mind, laugh: Activision has created a “dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world.” “Brand initiatives,” folks. Get ready for, like, 900 new Call of Duty games in the next few years!

What’s up with Australia’s planned Internet filter?

Man, what's up with Australia? I think we've touched on the country's plan to block all sorts of unwanted content from reaching the country's computers, but now Google and Yahoo have officially come out against it. Surely Google knows a thing or two about battling state-sponsored Internet censorship.

  • How many of you would pay a monthly fee to play Call of Duty?

How many of you would pay a monthly fee to play Call of Duty?

Nobody has confirmed anything, but let's assume someone on Activision Blizzard's payroll is currently creating a massively multi-player Call of Duty game. The company's CEO, Bobby Kotick, recently expressed enthusiasm toward subscription-based games during the company's fourth quarter conference call. "If you think about the success that we've had in other product categories on subscription [presumably World of Warcraft, which had as much to do with Activision as I did with the Manhattan Project], you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise [Call of Duty]," he said. Or translated from corporate-speak into English: "You're damn right we want to make a Call of Duty MMO. Monthly fees to have people play pew-pew-pew? Yes, please." But is that a wise move?

So what were the ‘Happy 2010!’ glasses like?

Happy 2010, people who count from Anno Domini using the Gregorian calendar! I greeted the new year by saying, sometime well after midnight, “Oh, it's 2010 already.” I was playing the PC version of Call of Duty 4, which is demonstrably better than the Xbox 360 version I played two years ago. But that's not the point of this here post. No, for I have one question to ask of the people who did go outside and celebrate: what were the “Happy 2010!” glasses like?

Were you one of the 2 million Xbox Live users who used Facebook this past week?

At least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook this past week, which I guess means the feature is a bit of a success. (You'll recall that Microsoft launched Facebook and Twitter to so much enthusiasm last week.) Mysteriously, Microsoft didn't reveal the number of people who logged into Twitter. Is this the end of Twitter?

Another big day in gaming: Assassin’s Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2 & Tony Hawk Part 900

Today's another big day in gaming, friends. (You'll notice that we're practically a game blog now. I blame the publishers for releasing the biggest games of the year within a few days of each other.) Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II, Valve's Left 4 Dead 2, and Activision's Tony Hawk Ride come out today (I assume the Tony Hawk franchise is still around because it's still popular. I haven't played one since Tony Hawk 4.)

What’s the bigger seller: New Super Mario Bros. Wii or Modern Warfare 2?

So by now you probably already have Modern Warfare 2, have beaten the single-player mode (cheap shot!), and have been killed within three seconds of re-spawning in multi-player mode more times than you'd care to admit. Great, good for you. Something that has been taken for granted, though, is that the game will be one of the best-selling games of the year, if not the best-selling. Hold your horses, partner, because an Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst has said that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will well outsell Modern Warfare 2 when it's all said and done.

Activision Publishing, Inc. will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Wii on November 10 in conjunction with the launch of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2.” Does that mean Call of Duty 4 is coming to the Wii, or some other Call of Duty game?
