Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 hands-on reports hit the web

The Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 leaked-out late last night and surprised the Internet with their down-right sweet styling. Well, Sony has gone and made the pair official, announcing the NEX-5 will retail for $650 with the NEX-3 fetching $550. The cameras have been in the works for some time and just as the press release was crossing the wires, the big camera sites published their hands-on reports. These aren't full reviews, but they definitely have some insight that cannot be gathered from a press release.

Hands-on with the new Leica line: Sexytime

Say what you want about Leica but they make some beautiful glass and some great cameras. Today I saw the 18-megapixel M9 (New Yorkers take note: Leica will have loaner units at the New York Photo Festival), the 12-megapixel X1, and the brand new V-LUX 20. I didn’t get a chance to shoot much but [...]

  • Droid Incredible versus Nexus One: cameraphone showdown

Droid Incredible versus Nexus One: cameraphone showdown

With all this talk of the Droid Incredible ousting the Nexus One from Verizon Wireless, having a better multitouch implementation, and just being newer and shinier, you might think this comparison of cameras is just mercilessly piling on the pain for the original Googlephone. After all, the Nexus One and its 5 megapixel sensor came out a good few months ahead of the 8 megapixel Droid Incredible, so surely this battle would be over before it's even begun? Not so fast, says Android and Me, whose diligent testers have put the two HTC handsets through a side-by-side shootout. As it turns out, the Nexus One rather swept the contest in both naturally and flash-lit shots, while the Incredible habitually exhibited a blue hue in less than perfectly lit photos. Both cameras were adept at taking excellent daylight photos, as is to be expected, but the devil is as usual in the details -- and you can find all of them at the source link below.

    [Thanks, Matt]

    Videos: Super-mobile rescue robot Quince

This is one of the coolest rescue robots I've ever seen. Meet Quince, jointly developed by Japan's International Rescue System Institute, Tohoku University and the Chiba Institute Of Technology. The eight-wheeled robot may not look like much, but it's actually very impressive when you see it in action. Quince is supposed to help humans during "CBRN"-type emergencies (it can be used in the case of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear disasters). The robot is sized at 655mmx481mmx225mm, weighs 26.4kg and can move as fast as 1.6m/s.

Polaroid is back, baby. But don't run out to Walmart just yet. First I don't even know if Walmart is selling this kit, but if it was, you might want to pass. Living in the past isn't cheap. The Polaroid 300 carries a $90 MSRP with 10-shot film packs going for $10. That's a lot of cake.

  • Is this the first home controlled solely by iPads and iPhones?

Is this the first home controlled solely by iPads and iPhones?

I said it a few days ago and I'll say it again, the iPad is the future of home automation. I'm clearly not alone in this thinking, either. At least one installer has already embraced the iPad and rolled out what could be the first whole-house system controlled by two iPads and one iPhone. This includes everything from the security systems, HVAC, cameras, three media servers, a Russound audio system, to even the pool can be controlled via these devices. The installer has seen the future and it includes lots of iPads and money. via CEPro,
"My plan is to sell many more automation systems," he says. "The stumbling block for clients in the past hasn't been the control system, it's always been the cost of the user interface. With the iPad, this problem has been completely removed. This is a tremendous victory for the future of my business. I don't have to sell expensive products that don't multitask. And I get to charge each time I program an iPad or add one to the system."
