Form over function: Brinell Purestorage external drives
Posted on March 29, 2010 | No Comments
I understand the desire to have your computer stuff look good, really I do. But things like this are just silly to me. They are obviously pointed at a market that doesn't know any better, and buy things based on the appearance rather then the functionality. Brinell, the company that makes these fancy veneer clad drives, has even won a couple of design awards for their form over function.

DIY: Flat pack scooters and bike
Posted on February 1, 2010 | No Comments
I'm not sure exactly how useful these things are, but as a concept they are definitely cool. Flat pack furniture, sure. But I'm not so sure about flat pack vehicles, these look like they might have some structural issues.

Finally, a dishwasher safe carbon fiber wallet
Posted on January 26, 2010 | No Comments
Geez, not to sound ungrateful but it’s like hey wallet industry, what took you guys so long? I’ve been sitting on this dirty wallet of mine for years with no obvious way to clean it.
Thanks to the miracle of carbon fiber (it’s seriously a cool material, I’d wear a carbon fiber sweatsuit if I could), this $50 wallet from Hammacher Schlemmer “will never stretch, fade, or develop cracks like a leather billfold.”

SmartFish concept aircraft swims in the air
Posted on January 24, 2010 | No Comments
The SmartFish aircraft is a concept vehicle created by an engineering firm in Germany, based on the aerodynamic shape of a fish. So far, they have only built a remote control version of the aircraft, however a prototype is in the works. The prototype will be built from kevlar and carbon fiber, however the designers expect the vehicle to be relatively inexpensive to build.

Sony VAIO Z Series: Core i7 CPU, four SSDs, 13.1 inches at 3.2 pounds
Posted on January 19, 2010 | No Comments
Carbon fiber, people. That’s the ticket right there. It’s the miracle substance that allows Sony to stuff super fast components into a 13.1-inch laptop while keeping the weight at around 3.2 pounds. And while most ultraportable notebooks favor style over substance, the impending VAIO Z Series due from Sony in March will feature an Intel Core i7 CPU, NVIDIA graphics, 1920x1080 screen resolution, and the ability to stack four solid state drives in a Raid 0 configuration. Again, all at just over three pounds.

Pedal Brain iPhone kit smartens up your bicycle
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No CommentsCyclists already have a range of dedicated devices to choose from that will help them with their training, and it looks like they'll soon have an iPhone app / accessory kit to call their own as well. While the folks behind it are apparently still working on the finishing touches, they've nonetheless decided to get official with their so-called Pedal Brain kit, which more or less promises to be a Nike+ alternative for cyclists. That means it comes with an accessory (a case) that relies on the ANT+ wireless protocol to relay all the necessary information form your bike, which in turn is processed and analyzed by the Pedal Brain app (all of which will also work with an iPod touch). Pedal Brain also goes one step further with a coaching component, which will actually let you make your own training plans and sell them through the app (you'll also be able to determine the price, but Pedal Brain will apparently take a $4 a month cut). No word on an exact price or launch date for the kit itself just yet, but it will apparently sell for somewhere between $130 and $200 (or more if you want the spiffy carbon fiber case).Pedal Brain iPhone kit smartens up your bicycle originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 14:02:00 EST. Most shoulder mounts for DSLR video are strange metal and carbon fiber contraptions, which work I guess. But what if you want something a bit more organic, something that you can make yourself. Here's a shoulder mount that was constructed from a single piece of wood.
Your iPad has that nice metallic look, right? You want to preserve that sleek industrial design. You want Fusion of Ideas
