Square mobile payment system goes live on iPhone, iPad, and Android this week (video)
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsWe've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. The software is said to be hitting App Stores and Markets this week, working with a sugar cube-sized card reader that pops into the 3.5mm headphone jack, a device that the company is giving away for free to those who sign up. Using it will not be free, with retailers paying fees starting at 2.75 percent plus a 15 cent surcharge, but that's considerably cheaper than many other options out there (which often require costly hardware to boot). There's another new video after the break, and we can't wait for these things to start showing up at the farmer's market. No more early morning ATM runs!
Update: Apps for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices are now live in their respective download abodes. None will require that you enter a single digit of your credit card.

ViewSonic ultraportable swaps out optical drive with extended battery
Posted on February 23, 2010 | No Comments
ViewSonic’s 13.3-inch ViewBook Pro (VNB131) promises up to 8-hour battery life with the standard 6-cell battery but you can also swap out the built-in optical drive with an included 3-cell battery slice for an extra four hours of juice. That’s a nice touch for anyone who’s on the go a lot but still needs to be able to work with disc-based media from time to time.

Gateway's new SX2840 is an ideal system for someone who needs a good basic computer. It's designed to be a small form factor rival to the high end, high cost systems currently on the market. The new SX2840 also hits that mythical sweet spot of price and performance, making it the ideal system for someone looking for a combination of price and performance.

MSI Wind series netbooks go multi-platinum. So here’s another one.
Posted on January 26, 2010 | No CommentsMSI has sold millions of their Wind series of netbooks. Let’s all give them a round of applause shall we? But what does this mean for you guys? Magic wand bomb detector deemed fraudulent, inventor imprisoned
Posted on January 23, 2010 | No Comments
Remember back a few months when news broke about a little device that claimed to detect different sorts of bombs? The ones that the Iraqi government spent $85 million on over the last few years even though American military commanders and the FBI stated that they simply don't work. Well, as we all assumed, the ADE-651 is a sham. It's just a dirty racket. Good thing that the British government finally caught on, banned the device and threw the inventor in jail. (He's out on bond as of writing)
It seems that the heart of the device is ID badge-sized cards that are supposed to be used for detected different items. There are different cards for everything from TNT, plastique, to even money and elephants. However, as the Cambridge Computer Laboratory found out, these cards contain nothing more than a dumb RFID tag. Seriously, watch the BBC investigation video after the jump.
