iPhone 4 arrives at Walmart (update: and Best Buy!)
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsCheck out that sweet, sweet box. Yes folks, we seem to have received our very first in-the-cardboard picture of the retail iPhone 4 out in the wild. We don't work at Walmart, so we can't verify this one for ourselves, but our tipster says Apple's latest phone has just landed in the big box retailer's storehouses.
P.S. -- Before you start frothing at the mouth, the CDMA coding on the box in the background relates to an LG 290C handset also stocked by Walmart.
Update: A shot of a Best Buy arrival is past the break.Continue reading iPhone 4 arrives at Walmart (update: and Best Buy!)

“Universal Packaging System” concept misses the point
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No Comments
In theory Patrick Sung's new design concept sounds good. A sheet of cardboard, perforated in such a way to make it easy to wrap around an item, all the time protecting it from damage during shipment. But that's where the good idea fails. Plus, I doubt the United Parcel Service will let him use their logo.

Recyclable mannequin robots
Posted on January 7, 2010 | No CommentsWe have seen mannequin robots already, machines that may sometime replace real models in fashion shows and similar events. Needless to say that the company behind those robots is based in Japan. And it was clear that the first robot maker marketing a new line of robots as "recyclable" would come out of the same country, too. And Osaka-based Eager [JP] is combining both ideas by offering recyclable mannequin robots.

DIY: build a medium format film camera from scratch
Posted on November 2, 2009 | No Comments
It's amusing to me how sometimes how I'll be considering a particular subject and then randomly find a DIY project related to that subject. For example, I'm been considering getting a medium format film camera, just for the experience of shooting in that format. Apparently I'm not the only one, because Peter J at the Medium Format Camera Project has been building his very own camera.

November 6: stores open at 6AM for DROID, Droid Eris?
Posted on October 30, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Android
So, you're a prospective Moto DROID customer. You've soaked up the review, studied the manual, and even built your own cardboard dock in anticipation of the big November 6 street date. What's next, you ask? Well, set your alarm early -- if the rumors are true, Verizon Wireless will be opening its retail shops at 6:00 AM sharp. Of course, all that is in addition to the Droid Eris, which is rumored to be making its debut on that auspicious date as well. So what's the plan, guys -- wake up early or camp out the night before?

Verizon Sent Us a Droid – Sort of.
Posted on October 21, 2009 | No Comments
About an hour ago, we received a mysterious package from Verizon bearing the somewhat-gorgeous, somewhat-creepy red eye that the Motorola Droid is now known for. We, of course, could hardly wait to tear it open - but not before we put up a shot of the box to give you guys a chance to guess what was inside, first.
Some guessed that it was a T-shirt; others guessed that it was a human head. Most guessed that it was a Droid.
And sure enough, there was a Droid inside that box. It's just not the Droid that we - or you, most likely - were looking for.

Review: mStand by Rain Design
Posted on October 5, 2009 | No CommentsHere at TechCrunch HQ, almost all of us have laptops, with some connecting their laptops to an external display. In my case, I use a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro connected to a 22" Gateway display. I have always gone by the theory that the more real estate space you have, the more productive you are. To keep both displays level, I've been trying out number laptop stands; anywhere from paper stacked on top of each other, to cardboard, but it seems like the best laptop stand for my Mac is the mStand from Rain Design. The mStand is designed for the MacBook and MacBook Pro, yet it works with all laptops. The mStand is made of a single solid piece of aluminum that matches MacBook Pro's silver anodized finish.

Case-Mate’s fully customizable and recyclable iPhone case
Posted on September 11, 2009 | No CommentsSeriously, this case offers a lot for next to nothing. Not only can you bedazzle it anyway you want, but when you’re done with it, just throw it in with your recycling. Plus it’s only $0.99 or 10 for $8. But the fun doesn’t stop there. We all know that the iPhone is a mugger beacon. [...] -
Did you know that your iPhone is also a document scanner?
Posted on August 3, 2009 | No CommentsOh, look, a legitimately clever use of the iPhone, and one that's not hard at all to replicate at home. Essentially, you set your iPhone on a raised surface, then you snap away using the phone's camera. Congratulations, you've just created an inexpensive document scanner.

CrunchGear’s Gadget Club Contest with Peek and Radio Shack
Posted on July 15, 2009 | No CommentsRemember the Radio Shack Battery Club? Back in the old days you’d go into Radio Shack with a card and they’d give you free battery once a month. It was heaven. Cardboard Gadgets Inspire Rainforest-Destroying Lust
Posted on June 8, 2009 | No CommentsKyle Bean’s wonderful design project is supposed to be a comment on runaway consumerism. Named Disposable Technology, it is a “response to our consumer relationship with technology and obsolescence”, representing the throwaway culture of gadgets by constructing their likenesses in plain, worthless cardboard. Nice try, Kyle, but you messed up. These cardboard clones are amazing: Far [...]
