Posted on June 4, 2010 | No Comments

Samsung Galaxy S launches in Europe, hitting US ‘later this year’
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsSo that simultaneous global launch isn't going to materialize quite as we were told, but Samsung is indeed bringing the Galaxy S to the widest possible audience. The Korean giant has made its 2010 flagship official in Europe today, meaning you should be able to sign your life away to your favorite carrier in exchange for it very soon indeed. We're told the 4-incher will be making its American debut later in the year, though a protracted delay appears unlikely. Pricing on the Galaxy S might not turn out to be all that democratic, but its comprehensive choice of more than 100 global carriers sure will be, and might suggest we'll get a choice of networks when the phone finally makes its way Stateside. Hang tight, gringos, not long to go now.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy S launches in Europe, hitting US 'later this year'

Steve Jobs: ‘there might be’ advantages to two iPhone carriers in US
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Steve_Jobs_there_might_be_advantages_to_2_iPhone_carriers'; At Steve Jobs' conversation with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at D8 this evening, the Apple boss just threw out this weighty little gem when asked whether there'd be advantages to deploying the iPhone on two American carriers: "there might be." Naturally, you can interpret that any way you like, but it's interesting that he failed to say no to the concept of taking the phone beyond its usual AT&T playground.
Speaking of AT&T, Jobs says that his company meets with the carrier once per quarter to get briefed on network improvements, and while he notes that they've got the fastest 3G around, he says "I wish they were improving faster" -- while also qualifying that any network receiving the iPhone back in '07 probably would've suffered the same kinds of problems AT&T has. When pressed on whether we'd see the iPhone on another carrier in the near future, Jobs hit them up with the expected "no comment" before turning to other subjects, so make of it what you will. Follow the break for another interesting snippet from the Q&A session at D8 where Steve muses on AT&T's network improvements.Continue reading Steve Jobs: 'there might be' advantages to two iPhone carriers in US

Motorola Shadow slithers into Verizon’s inventory database as MB810
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIf the whole "smoke -> fire" adage proves true once more, it's looking like Verizon loyalists can expect to see a Shadow at least a few milliseconds before a CDMA iPhone. Following up on months of leaks and rumors, we've got yet another snippet of evidence pointing towards a VZW release of the so-called Motorola Shadow. Spotted here in the carrier's inventory database, the MB810 moniker aligns perfectly with that WiFi certification we saw earlier in the month. Combine that with the fact that this is definitely some sort of Motorola smartphone, and you've got everything you need to start pinching those pennies for a June / July debut. Oh, you already threw down a Benjamin for Memorial Day grub? Good luck with that return policy.

White BlackBerry Bold 9700 now shipping at T-Mobile for $100
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No Comments
As promised, T-Mobile has now taken the white version of its BlackBerry Bold 9700 to retail. Along with the already-available black version, the 9700 goes out the door for $99.99 on contract after rebate, merely half of what the carrier was asking for the phone when it launched late last year -- and a price that makes the much lower-end Curve 8520 a less compelling buy, if we do say so ourselves. Interestingly, these guys are still selling the G1, and it goes for exactly the same price; which would you rather have?White BlackBerry Bold 9700 now shipping at T-Mobile for $100 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 28 May 2010 03:28:00 EST. Cincinnati Bell’s Blaze is probably the rarest carrier-branded Android phone you’ll find in the States
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsOf all the regionals to score a completely custom, self-branded Android device, we admit that we wouldn't have guessed that Cincinnati Bell would be in that list -- and yet the carrier managed to roll out this here "Blaze" running Android 1.6 "at speeds 86 percent faster than AT&T and Verizon." That's a pretty bold claim, but our tipster reports that he saw 2Mbps down and 1Mbps up on a phone he checked out -- not bad, all things considered. Unfortunately, the phone appears to have a rather wacky skin, which -- considering the no-name brand involved here -- might really doom the Blaze to an Eclair- and Froyo-free life. Hit up the gallery below for some shots of the phone in the wild, or march into your Cincinnati Bell store to grab one for $100 on contract.
[Thanks, Justin H. and Adam M.]

Telus teasing a June 8 launch — the HTC Triumph, perhaps?
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsSo the popular rumor going around at the moment is that Telus is on the verge of releasing a Canada-flavored HTC Desire rebranded as the "Triumph," which seems pretty reasonable considering that the carrier has made no effort to launch the Nexus One and undoubtedly wants to pimp as many awesome phones as it can right now to drum up usage of its nascent HSPA network. This all lines up nicely with the fact that Telus' home page is now teasing an "unleashing" on June 8, less than two weeks from today. Sounds like a win -- provided they can keep the three-year contract price in check, of course.

Sprint places foot in mouth, dissing the Pre while lusting after the iPhone
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No Comments
At a recent investor conference, Sprint's Chief Financial Officer, Robert Brust, admitted to investors that "The Pre didn't work out as well as we hoped" (even despite its exciting appearance in Survivor: Heroes vs Villains) and that they'd "love to have" the iPhone.

HTC Wildfire priced by T-Mobile, coming to UK on June 14
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsThe biggest outstanding question about the Wildfire has now been answered by at least one carrier -- T-Mobile will be delivering HTC's student-friendly handset at the £20 ($29) per month price point on two-year contracts. Frankly, that's a bigger financial commitment than we'd expected to have to make, but it will presumably include unlimited (which in T-Mobile lingo means a 3GB fair use policy) data use and a healthy allowance of calls and texts. If that doesn't rub you up the right way, look out for Virgin Mobile to reveal its pricing in the near term, having announced it'll be carrying the phone via a tweet.Continue reading HTC Wildfire priced by T-Mobile, coming to UK on June 14

China Telecom launches BlackBerry… the BlackBerry Storm, that is
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsWhen a carrier announces that it's adding BlackBerry devices and BES support to its lineup, very rarely does that mean a touchscreen BlackBerry -- but hey, crazier things have happened. China's CDMA-based giant, China Telecom, has announced a partnership with RIM to bring the Storm (the original 9530, as far as we can tell) into the mix in the second half of this month, available in some sixteen provinces for a yet-to-be-announced price. At any rate, it's fair to assume your privacy will be compromised at no additional charge.China Telecom launches BlackBerry... the BlackBerry Storm, that is originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 18 May 2010 16:08:00 EST. Samsung Moment gets Android 2.1 update from Sprint, Hero users promised to be next
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsHey, hey -- what do you know? If you're a Samsung Moment owner on Sprint, you know exactly how glorious it feels to have and hold Android 2.1, which Sprint has confirmed to be rolling out to handsets as we speak. Notably, a tweet on the matter has the carrier promising that Hero owners will be "next" to see the same update, but sadly a time line wasn't given.
