Sony Japan busts out cassette(!)/radio/CD-player combo
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No Comments
It's not a joke: Today, Sony in Japan did announce [JP] a portable cassette tape/radio/CD-player. Technically, the CFD-A110 is based on a model Sony introduced exactly seven years ago. The company updated the hardware because Japan plans to stop analogue radio transmission next year (the updated model can't receive these signals).

What to expect from E3 2009?
Posted on June 1, 2009 | No CommentsYes, it's true. Peter and Devin and Greg, I think, are in Los Angeles for E3 2009. It's an exciting time for us all, especially those of us who won't be spending the next three (?) days fighting crowds and lines for the privilege of taking a few seconds of Shaky Cam footage of some generic first-person shooter. But enough of that, let's stay positive—it's E3! And this year, it's the real E3: the Los Angeles Convention Center, Very Expensive setups, and enough models (“booth babes”) to make you say, “Really, does Video Game 3 need all those half-naked women flailing about to promote itself?” The answer, of course, is yes. Yes it does.

The new AMEX DIGITAL HD Media Player Venice-V38HD, it has a 2TB HDD
Posted on May 29, 2009 | No Comments
Think the world has enough media streamers? Hells no. There is definitely room for the AMEX DIGITAL Venic-V38HD with it's 2TB storage. The trapezoidal media player does about everything. It streams all major file formats off a local network (including AVI's, Moxi), plays media files off USB drives, has a DVD/CD player - that's about it. The only thing missing is a Blu-ray drive really.

LEGO Boombox looks sweet, still can’t make your kid’s music sound good
Posted on April 17, 2009 | No Comments
The collaboration between LEGO and Digital Blue has already produced a couple of interesting gadgets for the wee ones, so here's another one to add to the stack. The LEGO Boombox is a decidedley low-techish CD player / AM/FM radio, with two 1 watt speakers, and a few buttons to boot. The saving grace of this little guy is obviously its shape -- which is awesome -- but we really need to know if its going to come in other colors (like hot pink) before we can think about buying it. This bad boy is going to be available sometime this summer, and it'll run $39.99Filed under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio

Marantz unveils high-end UD9004 Blu-ray / SACD player
Posted on March 20, 2009 | No CommentsWe can definitely see where this is headed. Hot on the heels of Denon's DVD-A1UD and OPPO's BDP-83 comes yet another Blu-ray player that does just a pinch more than handle audio CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Unveiled as a prototype over in Munich, the Marantz UD9004 is just one format shy (it's lacking DVD-Audio support) of being a complete "universal" Blu-ray player. Said device, which is slated to get official sometime in 2009, is built upon the $6,500 SA-7S1 SACD player (pictured) and features a 10-bit Silicon Optix chipset, 14-bit video DAC, an SD card reader, RS-232 control interface, support for BD-Live and an Ethernet port. Outside of that, details are nonexistent, but we'll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

Sony’s CMT-LX30iR USB micro system loves on Apple devices
Posted on March 12, 2009 | No CommentsSony caved long ago and began producing sound systems for devices Designed in California[TM], so it's no real shock to see it delivering yet another variant that handles iPods and iPhones. The CMT-LX30iR, which has yet to be certified as real by Sony in North America, will purportedly aim at lower-end consumers by giving 'em just ten total watts of oomph, a slot-loading CD player, FM / AM radio, line-in and a headphone jack. There's also a remarkably basic 1-line LCD and a few equalizer presets, and the one-touch CD-to-USB Sync Recording is a fine touch. The unit has surfaced over on Amazon's German portal for €161 ($202), though we've no idea how pricey it'll be (or what it'll be called, for that matter) whenever Sony decides to take a hint and ship it stateside.Filed under: Home Entertainment

Linksys announces Wireless Home Audio System, another wireless audio toy for rich people
Posted on January 7, 2009 | No Comments
Unless you're down to hobble your own crazy homebrew set-up, tinkering with wireless audio systems is a damned expensive hobby. Everytime I read about these products, I imagine some rich old dude tango'ing himself around his mansion with a rose in his teeth and an air-partner in his arms.
Linksys' just announced "Wireless Home Audio System" is an obvious attempt at a shot across Sonos' bow - we'll have to wait until we get our hands on it to see if Sonos has any reason to be wary.
