IEEE begins work on new cellphone battery standard, we circle 2029 for ratification
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No Comments
You'll excuse us for poking a bit of fun at the IEEE, but after it took seven years to finalize a wireless standard that didn't change for most of that time, we have to wonder how long a new battery rulebook is going to take. IEEE Std 1725 is the current set of commonly agreed rules, in effect since 2006, but apparently "the cellular industry has grown tremendously since then" and our needs as consumers have changed. No kidding, 1GHz processors and 1080p video recording can kind of do that. The Cell Phone Battery Working Group (a real entity!) will hold its first meeting on the topic in February, and the final outcome will lay out up-to-date rules on the requisite quality, reliability, construction, and discharge characteristics of modern cellphone batteries. Let's hope "smartphones that last more than a day" figures somewhere on that list.IEEE begins work on new cellphone battery standard, we circle 2029 for ratification originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 04:53:00 EST. Acer outs 18.4-inch Core i7 laptop, I shall call it GIGANTOR!
Posted on November 3, 2009 | No Comments
Acer’s new 18.4-inch AS8940G-6865 is a desktop replacement. And by “desktop replacement” I mean that you could attach four legs to it and use it as your desk. It’s big, is what I’m trying to say. Don’t actually attach legs to it, but I guess take with you the impression that this is a large laptop. Also, it’s powerful, so keep that in mind as well.

ViewSonic announces 12-, 13.3-, and 14-inch ‘ViewBook’ ultraportables
Posted on October 21, 2009 | No Comments
ViewSonic dove headfirst into the ultraportable notebook game yesterday, with the announcement of the “ViewBook” line of 12-, 13-, and 14-inch low voltage machines.
It looks like MSI is getting set to launch a 12-inch Windows 7 netbook from its U200 series. You'll recall that the company released
Multitouch isn't just for tech nerds anymore according to Dell. The firm's latest convertible tablet PC is rocking a 12.1-inch multi-touch capable touchscreen in a chassis that's designed for manly men tasks. The chassis was engineered and tested to meet MIL-810G standards, but yet the notebook is only 1.5-inches thick and weighs in at 5.4 pounds. Look out, Jack Bauer and Mike Rowe. This one is for you two.
Can you believe it?
The A2 from ii-View is a 12-inch Windows 7 netbook with a 1280x800 resolution screen, 2GB of RAM, a travel weight of 3 pounds, and an MSRP of $399. Other features include an Intel Atom N270 CPU, 320GB hard drive, a/b/g/n wireless, HDMI output, webcam, and “full-size” keyboard. At its thickest, the machine reaches .88 inches.
